  • Shannon often drank heavily with his fellow servicemen in the Army, and after his mother’s death, he used alcohol even more in an attempt to cope with his grief. Eventually, his partner encouraged him to get mental health support. Peer groups helped Shannon manage his PTSD, and shared experiences like open-water swimming helped him feel less alone.
