I don't typically comment on UA-cam videos, but man this is so well-done. Your clarity on the section of the song you're referring to, and playing with such similarity to how the Dead plays it... just a cray amount of respect bro (your jokes are also hilarious lo)
I took up the guitar in my mid 60's. This is one of my favorite songs. You are a very funny engaging teacher. Thank you so much for showing me how to do this.
this is one of the great eight songs we never got to hear studio versions of as a follow up to fall 1970 american beauty.... all we got were live versions: bertha / wharf rat / brown eyed woman / he's gone / jack straw / mr charlie / ramble on rose / tennessee jed... oh how these could have sounded given fuller studio arrangements as well as added instrumentation like pedal steel horns and strings... thankfully wake of the flood captured those textures...
@@elmoblatch9787 yes, the Dead did great live versions of many songs, and some studio versions don’t measure up to the live ones. But think if you’d only ever heard live versions of the tunes on American Beauty, or Terrapin? There are lots of cool things you can do with a song in the studio. And to be honest, the live version of Wharf Rat on Skull & Roses was heavily tweaked in the studio. I for one would love to have studio versions of the songs mark brownner listed, as well as all the great live versions.

Davy, you crack me up bro! I enjoy all your lessons... not only for the quality instruction and breakdown but for the F-U-N you put in it. Long time Dead Head from the early eighties. Helping me play these songs is like hangin with the boys back in the day. Oh the stories I could tell! Thank you!!! Peace!
In the verse line, the bit you say is C C7 Dm7 C is actually C7 Cdim Bb9 C. The bass note is C throughout, the top note descends G, F#, F, E. Similar to the E turnaround in "Loose Lucy", also used in "The Music Never Stopped" (A I think). Used by Dylan a lot, most notably "Rainy Day Women", in the key of F, it's most of the song.
@@johnnybarrett5108 Yes, it is the full Cdim7. When I say Bb9, I mean Bb9 (no tonic) with C (the 9th) at the bottom. As a D tonic chord, that's Dm7b5 (still with the C - now the minor 7th - as bass). So, on my acoustic, I play C7 x35353; Cdim7 x3x242; Dm7b5 x3x131; C x32010. What you are doing here is pedalling the tonic of a full dominant 7 chord, stepping down all other tones a semi tone at a time, to resolve into the major triad. This is the most common form of this turnaround, that can also be used functionally elsewhere, and reversed in order (e.g. "Thank The Day" by NRPS -although the 4th chord is A7sus2, not A7). You can also use the minor 7th as the seed instead of the dominant 7th (as in "Spirit" by the Doobie brothers), or the Major 7th, or even the Minor Major 7th. Other songs that use the basic pattern - "Street Walker" by The Band, "Show Some Emotion" by Joan Armatrading - the latter also using 7#9 Circle Of 5ths chromatic voicing - but that's another day 😃

Good stuff boys
The best way I think to play the middle of the verse is to just keep the C in the bass over the dminor...so the walk down would be......C,C7,Dm7/C,C,C7. But that's a hard concept for many beginners to grasp so I get it and if your playing with a bass player it's not gonna matter am I right?
As a self learned Bass Player of 7 years who has no Fen idea what hes doing.. when i start climbing through Tennessees Octaves i get a rush on a different level thats far different than any other Jerry tune.. Agree to disagree, bro. The chords on rukind are C | Dm7 | C | C7, I add a C7 after that first C because it sounds right to me. Play it however you want though homie, but I stand by what I taught. And please don’t take this as disrespect, sometimes I do fuck up and I am totally okay with admitting when I’m wrong, but in this case, I gotta stand by it. I’ve played this song live a whole buncha times. But I appreciate you and I hope you watch more videos. Have a good day, bro bro.
@@TobyDavvy I don't mean to be an a-hole, but chord and tab sheets on ultimate-guitar (and some other youtube lessons) show the second chord as a C diminished. Even though you've played the song your way many times, you could still be open-minded to the possibility that you have that section a little off. Try playing along to the recording using a C diminished as the 2nd chord. You might be surprised by how "right" it sounds. Anyway, thanks for your kind response, peace and keep on truckin'!
I am open to it, and if that’s what it is, then, awesome, but I’m going to play it the way I play it. If it’s a bit off, I can live with that. I’m not a perfectionist, and it’s still the song regardless of one very slightly different chord. On this channel, we’re working from rukind, because overall, they have the most accurate tabs and chords all in one place. Also, not like I can really go back and change it at this point. It is what it is. Haha. But for real, I like being called out. Keeps me on my toes. So, thanks again for the discussion.
@@TobyDavvy Actually, I checked and Rukind does show the C diminished as the 2nd chord, designated with an asterisk, "*" (right over the lyrics word "bound"), with a little chord diagram off to the side. Sorry for beating a dead horse, I'll shut up now.

@@TobyDavvy During that tour I had a bumper sticker on my VW bug "The Fat Man Rocks"
Sorry, but you have the chords wrong on the breakdown part, "You know you're bound to wind up dead."
Bro, you’re all good. This is what community is about. I just went and looked at it again too. You’re right.
