I miss this station - used to listen to it on the way to and from school.

Just to clarify: It's Rufus (Calvin) Hurt *Not* "Hunt"
    as referenced from: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WKTU
Originally, on WAPP: Ted Bergin, who's real name is: Rufus Calvin Hurt
was part of the original WAPP morning show.
From the time the station signed on the air, it presented a music intensive morning show with only two stopsets of commercials an hour. Mornings were first hosted by Rufus Hurt with news by Judy Hernandez (another hold over from WAPP, where she went by the name Judy Herron). After Hurt left, "Big John" Monds began took over for him.
A month after the station's launch, WQHT began adding an air staff. Some of the first Hot 103 DJs, often referred to as "The Hot Jocks," to join WQHT, The original Hot Jocks were Deborah Rath-Howell from KPWR in Los Angeles, Alan "Al Nouveau" Bandiero from WKTU, Johnny "Big John" Monds from WUSL in Philadelphia, Sonny Joe Fox from KMEL in San Francisco, Frederick "Fast Freddie" Colon and Niecie Colon from WBLS, as well as Vanessa Scott, Rufus Hurt, and Mitchell Phillips, who were hold overs from WAPP.

Very awesome to hear this station in its infancy! This, KPWR, WKTU (pre-1996) and KMEL pretty much established the rhythmic contemporary radio format.
I think this might have been during their first week on-air.

I would add 610 KFRC. PD Gerry Cagle was adding in funk/R&B and dance music on their mainstream Top40 playlist from 1980-1983. Keith Nafalty was a assistant at KFRC during that era and took that concept to 106 KMEL in the late 1980’s.

Like the mid '80's @@HitsTownUSA, because that was at KMEL went to a "Power 106" level at the time!

@@VBaskin2010 KMEL was playing Bon Jovi in early 1987. They were still "All Hit 106 KMEL" from August 1984 up through 1986. by summer 1987 they didn't have any hair bands on their playlist going forward.

Pre hip hop, Hot 103/97 didn't take off as fast nor ever was as successful as their sister station for which they were copying for New York, Power 106 in LA. It wasn't until 1991 that they even got a 1st place finish in the target demo of 18-34. Power 106 was #1 in demo and overall in LA in just a few months time.
