I'm a statistics instructor at a community college in my area, and I'm just happy that someone is applying statistics to iRacing! Thanks for the video, and keep up the good work!
A small note about the p Values is that once you start testing for more than one thing, the chances of getting a 'statistically significant' result increases. There's nearly a 15% chance of at least one of the three results passing the 0.05 p Value test.
Should a Chi Squared test not be used in this case as you are comparing the corraltion between different data sets. I might just give this to my stats teacher to see what he says.
Ya stats was 7 years ago for me and I wasn’t even sure if I could use 2 sets of data like this and if correlation was even something useful to look for lol
I was thinking about this and you would have to group the data for a Chi Squared test so I'm not sure this is the best way to do it I might work it out at some point (living the further maths life)
You should check the usability of mixing the stabbing and dragging brakes. Also itd be cool if you tested wether spinning the rear tires when you leave the pits will help the rears for qualifying
Hey great video as always! One thing others and myself have yet to perfect is... Wait for it. Great video title incoming for you... [How To Master Pit Stops:] (Justin's masterclass on how to maximize pit entry, pit stops and pit exits) Ha.. ha.. anyways I always hesitate on proper pit entry speed and brake points coming to the entry line, once I'm in the pits as do others I'm certain due to many wrecks I've witnessed in that situation. When should you turn in and apply the brakes to stop? When you're released how do you maximize your exit? How do you avoid wheel spin on exit? I'm sure everyone here wants to avoid sloppy pit stops in general and this would make a superb video too.
Hey Justin if you ever do the pitstop experiment again can you add angled pitstops too? I have always wondered if coming straight on in instead of at an angle like irl drivers do has a significant time difference
Try this in NR2003 and you'll go into a spin. Though I think your swerving had a significantly higher frequency than what we see in real life, which probably is what caused the extra tire wear.
I try to stay a car or two length away on the pace lap when I see people start swerving. It usually resulted in the car hitting other cars and in one instance wrecking five before the race even started.
I was always under the impression swerving was to clean the tires not heat them..... When did it become heating? No point on heating tires right before a pit stop yet you see the swerving to clean the tires
I was told IRacing doesn’t share tire temperature information with third party apps so I’m not sure if that’s accurate. Along with I think the next gen cars swerving does heat them up.
How about the difference on long smooth “loading” swerving vs short burst, traction “break” swerving. IRL short swerving cleans the tires up quickly but long loaded swerving seems to raise the core temp & pressure the quickest. Do you think that applies to iRacing?
I wonder if the better temps on the rear tyres with the brake stabbing method is actually due to the following acceleration? My main category as a fan is F1. It's generally accepted that swerves helps, but to a lesser extent as they simply cannot put the necessary G's to put those tyres to work for most of the formation lap. The fronts are mostly heated by braking (cue in brake magic and Hamilton's PTSD from Baku), and the rears by the slip ratio from acceleration - the heavy throttle and mainly the burnouts when gridding again. So perhaps you got the rear tyres to heat up better on the stab braking method relative to the brake dragging because in the latter you were holding a steady pace while in the former you were repeatedly putting some significant longitudinal G's on that rubber?
Isn’t the swerve used to remove debris from the tires? I have been around racing my whole life and I use to think it was for warming tires when I was younger but I was corrected and told that when they are driving slow they pick up a lot of small stuff on the tires so they swerve to clean the tires and reduce the risk of spinning on restart?
Curious if the tire warming methods are different from road racing cars. Especially interested in brake dragging, cause I normally feel that it works quite well. Could you maybe, in the future, also make a tire heating sheet for for example gt3 on a road course?
- Idk if it's been proven or not but, running near the wall in qualifying slows you down because of the air cushion effect. Especially at super speedways. - Does anti stall slow down pit box exits?
Anti stall should only kick in if you falter, I’ve never seen anti stall kick in other than under heavy braking in a spin, where locking the tires would kill the engine. I always clutch in and out now so it’s more of a safety net and I haven’t seen the little light blue line in a months :)
I wanna know two things: How exactly is safety rating calculated? I know there's some sort of Formula, number of corners and number of incidents being factors, but does proximity to other cars without contact matter? Or number of cars? The other is what's the best way to USE UP fuel under yellow? I've had a few races where I've tried burning an extra couple laps off under yellow to try and save weight before green since I had plenty of fuel. Best I can think of is riding brake and trying to keep throttle as close to wide open as possible in the lowest gear possible without hitting the limiter.
It is caculated by number of corrners per incident point in in your ~last 2000 laps. In road racing its about 35 corners per incident to be A2.00 not sure if this is the same for oval racing. No other factors effect SR as far as I know
Correct me if I am wrong; didn't iRacing add temp to tires a year or so? With the intent of A) mimicking RL B) Stop all the swervers from wrecking others.
I always wondered how to get faster pit stops, something I've struggled with and wanted to know if there was a trick. It alway seems when I'm racing coke or pre-coke drivers that they always have quick stops. Never understood if it was random or just had to be on the money. Something else I would test and have tried is being as close to the middle at possible, not to far left not to far right, and coming in at an angle.
I good stops also have to do with getting in and out of the box. I still am not great on my launches but having good consistent launches is worth like a full second over a bad one. I would do a vid on it but I'm not good enough yet haha
@@DJYeeJay that is something I bad at too that I'm trying to work on. With iracing locking you from accelerating til the stop is complete it's hard to ride the clutch to get a solid launch and not do a big burnout losing time.
For tire temps did you record the tread or the core temps? Because from what I've heard the core is what mostly matters. From my experience in road racing stabbing the breaks is more useful to get heat into the core of the tire and have the breaks warmed up a bit for the start of the race, but I've never seen a huge improvement in pressures no matter what I do tbh.
These were center tread temps. Correct me if I’m wrong but the pressures would be directly correlated to internal temps right? In race situations I think it depends on if you want the temp in front or rears, I’d probably usually go with drag though for us oval guys
I tried swerving and wrecked the field on the pace lap. Thanks for the tip!
Haha nicely done 😂
Seems to be what many of the tire "warmers/scrubbers" do more often than not, so my guess is you're doing it right. 😉

Thank you! I would’ve gotten a solid C- in your class
Watch, now every race you join is gonna have guys swerving during the out lap and restarts 😂
We poked the bear
All the races I've been in for the last week or 2 already had everyone doing it. 😂
Hey, the man said he's not here to solve those problems! Valid disclaimer presented lol
As a statistician, I totally get the gist of what you're trying to say. Now, whether you said it correctly or not is another story 😂
Statistically on average my words were at least 1 sigma from the truth

This is crazy, I was playing iracing earlier today & wondered if there was a video on this. Coincidentally you post one today
I do a bit of swerving and some brake dragging. Single file you swerve. One to go you drag brakes
You should check the usability of mixing the stabbing and dragging brakes. Also itd be cool if you tested wether spinning the rear tires when you leave the pits will help the rears for qualifying

Love theses videos Bro, Awesome job!
Thanks for covering my question!
Thanks for asking!
I too remember that three month period of my life where I knew how to do significant tests
This is the kind of data I enjoy seeing
I was always under the impression swerving was to clean the tires not heat them..... When did it become heating?
No point on heating tires right before a pit stop yet you see the swerving to clean the tires
Tires don’t need cleaning in iracing but any tiny bit of an advantage people try to squeeze out
What if it is more about orientation than position in the pit box?
That’s also possible
AP Stats test for me tomorrow, and yes, you used the P-Value right.
I was told IRacing doesn’t share tire temperature information with third party apps so I’m not sure if that’s accurate. Along with I think the next gen cars swerving does heat them up.
Best scenario for tire warming for Q is to roll in the tires with a balanced, unabrasive,
1st lap with no braking at 50-75% speed.
How about the difference on long smooth “loading” swerving vs short burst, traction “break” swerving. IRL short swerving cleans the tires up quickly but long loaded swerving seems to raise the core temp & pressure the quickest. Do you think that applies to iRacing?

Yeah I’ll probably do a full road car episode eventually
Are tire heating techniques consistent across different cars and/or tire models?

If they had taught math using race cars I would've been an A+ student. I've never been so interested in the math behind something ;p
I think what this doesn’t necessarily answer is whether the swerving prior to the start of the race matters. Does this impact tires whatsoever?
I might do a follow up in the future with actual driving afterwards, but I wanted to be purely objective this video
Now we need a dirt test 😉 haha but very interesting information
You should do it hahaha
@@DJYeeJay at this point these no reason because everything is gonna change week 13
statistics check out, i was doing actually doing a - level stats today XD
Let’s goooo
Wow, i always assumed they swerved back and forth to clean the rubber of the tires. not to heat up the tires.
Correct me if I am wrong; didn't iRacing add temp to tires a year or so?
With the intent of
A) mimicking RL
B) Stop all the swervers from wrecking others.
The change made was they tires reset when the car is under 35mph on outlap, what they did to change how heat is built was a bit more vague

I feel like the tire warming in this case may be somewhat setup dependent
Only thing I can think of is brake bias would affect the distribution between front and rear heat
I thought all the confusion in iracing was whether the tire temps were reset at the green light
I would be curious if the tire heat methods changes alot for dirt oval?

No it would shift some numbers
a B is cool and all... but what was that AP test score?? 🤔🤔
I think a 4. Never mattered because my school wouldn’t use that credit for anything useful anyways sad
Myth: Does brake temp have an effect on braking efficiency for iRacing stock cars?
Good idea I’m not 100% sure how to test it
Is this pit stop animation a normal feature in iracing? I’ve never seen this on mine

I don’t think so but it could fall into the “intent and respect” type stuff
