About German, this specification business is only common for long distance travels. Short distamces are all usually done by using "gehen", which would mean travelling by foot, though you can use "fahren", when explicitly wanting to state that you go there by a vehicle. If you want to remain unspecific regarding long distance travels it is usually "fahren" meaning to drive (actually this might be because in German you can "fahren" a lot of things (cars, trains, bicycles, motorcycles, ships, etc.), since it doesn't just mean drive but also ride (except for living things like horses, there you'd use "reiten")). The only exception would be when using a plane, there we'd say "fliegen", meaning to fly. If you actually go there by foot, then you'd most likely "wandern" there, meaning to hike, but just because it takes a lot of time. So the difference isn't that big. Especially when talking about flying somewhere, since as far as I am concerned you also say that you are flying somewhere. So it is more about, what is more common to use for long or short distance travels, rather than the means used to go there.
