In an unlikely alliance between an Irish traditonal 'Bodhrán' player and a Northern Irish 'Lambeg' drummer, Rónán Ó Snodaigh (Kíla) meets with Unionist and Derry resident Richard Campell where they collaborate, llisten and learn from each other. 'A Gardener Now' is a message of growth and nurture. A message of peace, reconciliation and hope, through the language of music.
    Poem: Rónán Ó Snodaigh
    Soundtrack score: Myles O'Reilly
    Cinematography: Myles O'Reilly
This has been a patron sponsored creation on / mylesoreilly helping me make on music film per month.
    A message from Rónán Ó Snodaigh;
"It's very exciting for me as a Gael and a bodhrán player to get a chance to play and learn from a Lambeg Drummer. Richard has been kind enough to accept me as myself and open enough to play along with me as we both delve into each other's stories and rhythms. It's not often these two traditions get to converge, even though we often live within drumming distance of each other. There's a good chance the possibilities for fun outweigh the other tried and tested options of ignoring each other. It seems to me that our two traditions have lived alongside each other here on this Island for hundreds of years with very little communication. There have been historic reasons for us to be separated and to keep our traditions apart but I'm hoping that now is the right time to be meeting, greeting and listening to each other's Drums. Richard represents his community well, he's strong, true to his word, kind and open to meeting me and listening to my Drum.
Lambeg playing and culture has mystified me since I heard of it. My first chance to play alongside a Lambeg came in 1999 with 'the Big Drum ' a band curated by Brian Fleming, then in 2016 ‘Kiruu’ sang ‘Síocháin / Peace' and that is where I met Richard. We have been talking and playing whenever possible and meeting in Derry was very special for me because I was on his turf. There is so much history behind each of our pursuits that when we play the past is activated, this can be scary too but it's very rewarding for me to be able to cross into enemy culture and not be an enemy. The future could be very bright for us all, and good and loud too.
I'm hoping that more of this can happen for us and that we can get beyond being a threat to each other and move on to enjoying each other's tunes and rhythms. Who knows where it leads us but we know where the other approach has led us so I think this kind of carry on (meeting up and playing together) can guide us to a better future... for both our traditions.
    - Rónán

Great work from everyone involved in this project.
I am a Belfast child too.
    I miss my true home.
    The Cave Hill.
We all blew in from somewhere else along the line.
    Belonging can be shared.
    The tunes tell our stories.
But the beats move us on.
    Thank you.

    Hello from California.
I've just stumbled over this wee gem quite unexpectedly today, the Winter Solstice of 2021, and you have filled my heart.
My deepest thanks to all involved in putting this together and bringing it to the world.
And my fervent hope for continued peace, healing, music, poetry, and love.
    We ALL need it.

Thanks for making and sharing such a beautiful film, touching on the nature of sound and the rhythms of peace that can pave a new direction of harmony between two cultures that are so near yet have been so far apart. A real treat to experience something of the meeting of these two fellows and their musical lives, an incredible insight and very moving film. The ambient soundtrack was a wonderful compliment and extremely well placed. Well done Myles.

You've outdone yourself Myles O'Reilly.I have enjoyed many of the things that you have put together over the last few years but this video and its story and its images are so powerful. My bloodline is stained by the treachery of colonialism and the violence that comes with it. It does my heart good to see this. May healing come to us all.

I can only say in truthfulness the Lambeg drum brought uneasy discord which the Bodhran soothes until the two merges into one.

The shot of the mom and child at the rainbow flag colored cross walk should give any Irish patriots, or just reasonable human beings period, pause for concern. Your ancestors didn't struggle, and love and die to produce a society where your children are subject to sexual indoctrination as a 24/7 environmental presence. I wish everbody worldwide would respect their own people and their own collective futures.

Having grown up during the troubles in the north and witnessed the trauma caused by intolerance in the north, while at the same time the horrors of religious fundamentalists in the work houses in the south came to light. What scares me most for the future of Ireland are people who share your opinion.
Thankfully the island has moved on and more people can be accepted for who they are and not what others think the should be.

When you are an elderly dementia patient, you will wish to God that there was a biologically healthy, fertile ireland full of young family members and community members to listen to your tales of the troubles(or the good times), and keep you from dying old and alone, in the hell of isolation psychosis and dementia. If the society that produced you dies off from infertility, the outsiders that move in will not understand or care about you all that much when you get old. @@patrickbracken3363 the issue is not about hating gays... I feel sorry for the 20 percent of generation z who have been conditioned into becoming LGBT. They are not the enemy. The enemy is cultural attitude that promotes homosexuality as a viable solution to the problems of being impressionable, lonely, or sexually repressed ... we as a society scare our men out of chasing women... then flood their computers with all varieties of videotaped sex acts. I remember when it started with just lesbianism and anal sex being the weirder stuff that would pop up in your average free porn site geared towards hetero consumers.
