I don’t dance, but I have just been randomly HOOKED on this ballet for the last couple of years. Thank you for being a fun little corner of the internet to help me geek out over this performance piece.
YES! I didn't think you'd review this since it's very tap heavy, but I'm so glad that you decided to go for it because this scene is indeed brilliant and Steven is indeed a genius :) Can't wait to hear your analysis!
Omg I remember that vid so well from my childhood - I watched it over and over again for MONTHS on end. Partly because the ballet/tap fusion was genius and creative, and partly because I just found the hatter rly attractive 😆
Sometime back a YT video popped up and it was Steven McRea as Romeo. Can't remember if it was the balcony or bedroom scene & who was Juliet BUT Steven McRea WAS Romeo. So amazing. He is a very underrated world class very superior Premier Danseur. That man is so talented and such an actor. On 2nd thought maybe Juliet was played beautifully by Francesca Hayward. Who ever was Juliet was brilliant but Steven's portrayal left such an impact on me.
During the 2020 world shutdown, I tried to learn the Mad Hatter's tap dance 'cause why not. For me, the hardest part was around 2:00 minutes where the Mad Hatter, March Hare, and Dormouse are circling Alice. The Mad Hatter does what I can only describe as "glissade jeté with beats" and it took me so long to figure out how to not trip over my feet.
Steven McRae: total legend! This is one of my favourite ballets. Everything: dance, music, costumes, set come together so beautifully. And the caterpillar!!!
I happen to agree with your reverence for this neo-classical work. I also love the bravery it takes to risk the wrath of those Balanchine worshipers who believe that no works of genius have been made since the great man's death over 40 years ago.
@@curzonproduct It's easier to pretend that towering ballet creatives like Sir Kenneth MacMillan never existed. An excessively self-regarding American dance cabal led by New York Times dance critics and former New York City Ballet dancers had sprung up around pretending that Balanchine was not only everything, he was the ONLY thing. For many of these folks, even William Forsythe is a hack. One of the biggest critical dust-ups to ever happen on this side of the pond, was when former Washington Post Dance critic Sarah Kaufman dared to suggest that Artistic Directors were lazily programming so much Balanchine that they were neglecting other important works. All hell broke loose. Them's fightin' words. But here's the thing, some A D's sheepishly agreed that programming the same Balanchine works by too many companies can be just as mind-numbing as performing the same Petipa works over and over and over. Also, who wants to live in a museum?
As a rare dancer who was trained in both tap and ballet, I'm sure Steven was Wheeldon's muse for this piece. Others have performed it since, but Steven always was, and always will be the Original Mad Hatter. He is beyond comparison.
I appreciate that throughout the ballet Alice picks up steps from everyone she meets, it’s a really great visual way to show how the trip through Wonderland affects her.
This scene introduced me to the ballet and it’s still my favorite part of the ballet. I have listened to the soundtrack and the track for the tea party doesn’t sound right without the Mad Hatter’s tapping.
That's because the Mad Hatter IS the music. There's a video of Christopher Wheeldon working on the choreography with Stephen McCrae in which he says to Stephen "You are the music here, so it has to be crisp, precise, full of dynamics." I love this ballet and especially this scene. I can't imagine how it could be done with anyone other than Stephen McCrae playing the Mad Hatter. Who else has the versatility and virtuosity to do it? Watching this sent me off to find video of McCrae winning the Prix de Lausanne. He did the Corsaire, then for his free form, he did such an AMAZING tap number. It brought the house down. He was just 17. Was offered a place on the Royal Ballet School on the spot. He said he went with just his one suitcase, no adult from home with him, and never went back to Australia (which is where he's from). It would be interesting if you did "where are they now" for winners of the Prix de Lausanne, also if you showed their classical performance and their modern/jazz/whatever performance. I'd love to see how their careers went. And to do one exclusively on Stephen McCrae would be great, too. Thanks, ladies!
I re-watched Steven's Prox do Lausanne performance. I believe it was The Talisman, not Corsaire variation, that he did. It was great! I recommend everyone watch it. It's on UA-cam.
Thank you for your review of this unique and loveable scene. A word of explanation….l have explained in the past, to American citizens some details of the illustrations in the book by Tenniel.. The tag in the band of the top hat, 10/6,is the price of ten shillings and six pence or half a Guinea. In the Victorian era the skilled professional classes felt that it was beneath their dignity to deal in pounds shillings and pence if they could take a profit of five percent by working in guineas.(One Guinea being equal to one pound and one shilling.) This practice continued until 1971 when the United Kingdom began to use the decimal currency and the Guinea became obsolete.
I think Fred Astaire would be giving his nod of approval from the grave. Steven channels the same combination of precision, grace, and expression that made Fred a legend for over a century.

Steven McRae is a tap god! Have you seen him tap to Czárdás with Vasko Vassilev??? It’s brilliant and incredibly satisfying ❤❤ My nephew used to watch it with big huge eyes when he was one

I'm very grateful for your expert analysis of this incredible scene in this jaw-droppingly awesome ballet! As a non-dancer, I had assumed tap dancing must be very difficult for a ballet dancer (it almost seems like tap is an opposite skill set). But you have pointed out even more details to be astounded by! When I first got into watching ballet, I saw the "caterpillar" scene on UA-cam and bought the DVD right away! (To be fair, all of Alice in Wonderland ballet was carefully and meticulously executed - I think the more you know about the story, the more you get out of the ballet) Thank you for reviewing this scene! 😍 Also I noticed that even though everyone was doing something different, somehow there's overall correlation to make it seem still like one piece all together, which put me in an awe because that means that choreographer meticulously calculated which dance moves are located where so what may "SEEM RANDOM" could acutally mean they overall form a big harmonious structure. 😮 Thanks again for reviewing! ❤ Also if it's in your interest, would you girls try reviewing Shostakovich's "The Nose" ballet? I came across random tap dancing giant noses from youtube few years ago but never understood the context of that ballet 😂😂😂😂 It would be wonderful if you girls could review the history of this ballet and how it came to be and explain what's going on because the setting of the ballet looks so serious..until GIANT NOSES come out and tap dancing 😂😂😂😂😂
For some reason I've only watched small clips of this ballet and never noticed who played the Mad Hatter. But you're so right, I never would have known that was Steven McRae! And I just recently watched a documentary that included his terrible injury and recovery from it, so I was just looking at him pretty closely not that long ago. It's so cool how versatile he is! I really need to watch this ballet all the way through.
I'm SO excited that you're analyzing the Mad Hatter's dance! Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is one of my favorite ballets (and your Tart Adagio analysis video -- comparing it to the Rose Adagio is one of my favorites of your videos), so I'm having so much fun seeing you continue this amazing series!
I suggest "La Sylphide" in the different choreographies. Start of a new era in ballet and the first ballet danced en pointe. Also with strong male roles. Unfortunately the first choreography by Taglioni has not been preserved, We have only got fragmented descriptions. But Bournovilles is one of the oldest ballets which are still performed as originated. It would be interesting to compare the performances by different companies. There has been several spin-offs and newer versions on the basis of Bournonvilles choreography. That to show that ballet can be developed on previous versions and adapted for the audience of today. Creativity and not simple reproductions. That keeps ballet from being boring and gives new expreinces to older ballet nerds who have not yet seen it all.

Omg I love Steven McRae! I’m so glad you guys finally went over him as the mad hatter. Because of his technique he’s slowly but surely became one of my favorite dancers.
I love the cupcake and scone with jam that serve as seats. Incidentally, hatters really did get convulsions from poisoning by the mercury they used to make felt hats. Hence the expression "mad as a hatter." Also, dormice hibernate through the winter, which explains Alice's dormouse being sleepy.

I have a video idea for you! I would love for you to compare and contrast the White Swan PDD from two totally world-class but definitely distinct companies... The Bolshoi's rendition with Svetlana Zakharova versus the Royal Ballet's version with Marienela Nunez! I have literally been watching them side by side and I would LOOOOOVE your take on everything from the staging, the corps, the costumes, and the individual performances. They are so different from one another but each so spectacular in their own right! ua-cam.com/video/L8Kn1nkYNCI/v-deo.html. versus ua-cam.com/video/g_3R1hcCzhU/v-deo.html I can't be the only one who would love to see a comparison of these titans of dance!!!!
Wonderful and delightful, as always. This isn't related, but in this comparison video, the way Marianela Nunez does this (see timestamp 4:29) is the most exquisite ua-cam.com/video/rLSyvRh8g5Y/v-deo.html
@user-ld6hp2fm3r Ballet can be fun in many different ways and if you cannot see the brilliant ballet technique of all the dancers you are not looking very hard. As those who watch or dance we need to have flexible minds too.

Yup.
The little stage is a human-size Pollocks toy theatre.
Such a cute setting 🫰🏻🫰🏻
WOOOOOOOOO 😃
🥳🥳
Could be wrong, but I think The March Hare is Paul Kay and The Dormouse is Romany Padjak......female?.....anyway enjoyed Video ❤
Please review the 1948 film The Red Shoes
I love❤❤❤your channel, but the flickering of the screen drives me absolutely insane! Please stop it , please 😊😊😊
what flickering? maybe it's your device
The tapdancing was mesmerizing, but the music uninspiring.
Wonderful and delightful, as always.
This isn't related, but in this comparison video, the way Marianela Nunez does this (see timestamp 4:29) is the most exquisite

Почему вы называете ЭТО балетом?
Because it is? It’s one scene from a ballet that happens to have some tap dancing.
@@rosyface_ по-моему это пародия на балет
@user-ld6hp2fm3r Ballet can be fun in many different ways and if you cannot see the brilliant ballet technique of all the dancers you are not looking very hard. ALICE is a wonderful leave the biggest smile on your face ballet ever. Not all ballets have dancers wearing pointer shoes or ballet flats . As those who watch or dance we need to have flexible minds too.
@@micheledix2616 когда не могут придумать ничего своего, надо спародировать например розовое адажио.. это глупо и пошло.
Long time fan of your channel, thank you for featuring this sterling work. Just an FYI, when proclaiming BRAVO to more than one person it’s more grammatically correct to say BRAVI! Bravo = masculine, Brava = feminine, Bravi = plural. Thanks again.
