About the Sawara Grand Festival Summer Festival
Sawara's Grand Festival, a major event in Koedo Sawara, is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan and is called one of the three major float festivals in the Kanto region, with a tradition of about 300 years.
In 2008, "Yama, Hoko, Yatai events" including Sawara's float events were registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The pride of the festival is the float, which is made of zelkova wood and decorated with massive Kanto carvings. The upper part of the float is decorated with 4-meter tall dolls made by master doll makers in the Edo and Meiji Periods.
The floats, which are decorated with the "Sawara-bayashi" music, one of Japan's three most popular musical instruments, echo through the town, and the scene is reminiscent of the Edo period as they pass by the eaves of houses on the streets of Koedo, an area designated as a national preservation district for important traditional buildings.
