(MCFABULOUS 2020 UPDATE CONTINUED FROM VIDEO DESCRIPTION) Along with significant weight loss, I found a better way of living and learned how to feel legitimate self love for the first time in my life. After some time, I started writing songs again too. I also had the confidence to try dating for the first time. My early experiences required processing and songwriting seemed to do the trick. Inspired by the amazing radio stations of Chicago (V103, Power 92, and MeTVFM) and my first stumbling steps into romance, I wrote the songs that became “BenFM.” (2017) Learning how to perform this music live was a big part of the writing process for that album. While I never ended up touring outside Chicago (besides an ill fated gig at an EDM club in Madison, WI) I played a good number of successful shows around the city. Cole’s Bar in Logan Square felt like my home turf and I knew that on a busy Friday night I could earn the full attention of an ecstatic crowd by the end of my set. Around this time, the band Glass Animals sampled “Hobby Shop” for their song “Season 2 Episode 3.” It seems like my earlier work will always be more popular than what came afterwards, but that’s okay with me because I can hear the musical and personal growth from year to year and feel proud. If “Oh, Interesting!” was me fantasizing about love and “BenFM” was me dealing with the realities of it, then my final EP “Triple” (2018) was me attaining some level of maturity. I consider the three songs on that release to be the 3 strongest in the McFabulous catalog. Since releasing it, I haven’t felt the need to write any more McFabulous songs. I think the core ideas of the McFabulous project were stars and love, and as I grow older I feel less of a need to chase these things with my music and am more content to appreciate them in the world around me. My live act, a one-man-band auto-tune synth-shred show, started feeling stale around this time as well. I found my new direction in a collaboration with the 2-piece Chicago punk band Foul Tip, whom I had admired from afar for years. After an experimental one-off gig as McTip, we decided to make it official and started a band called Poplife. To me, the thesis of the band is Wave Race 64 soundtrack played by a punk band. Playing with Ed and Adam is so liberating. I can bring them whatever weird song I’ve written and they immediately make it fucking slam. They’re so game. I suggest listening to our song “Bad Attitude,” which I consider to be like “All Star” by Smash Mouth for the millennial/zoomer era. Aside from my personal work I teach music lessons, play bass in wedding and cover bands, and get hired to do work as a composer and songwriter. I’m successful and happy! I realized a few years ago that I would continue playing and writing music for the rest of my life, even if no one was listening. So far, so good!
I was the one who blew this up on reddit in '14. I'm honored to be a part of the mcfabulous story. My cousin sent this obscure video to me via a music school friend and I was spiritually called to give it the attention it deserved.
my mate showed me this song years ago and i loved it immediately. it takes a lot to write a catchy song with such clarity like this and i think internet people will appreciate it for a long time
I circled back on your music because the DC NPR station WAMU started using an instrumental clip in a promo for the Kojo Nnamdi Show that is either a sample of or a surprisingly close facsimile of Hobby Shop! So glad I came back to renew my love of your work and glad to hear that it's all worked out well! Peace!
I keep listening to this. It consumes my thoughts. There is nothing else. Just this song. Are there places to download your music??? Would pay irl money.
This is such a niche shit. I remember coming across this vid years ago. Was looking for a gif when I found the "peace" gif and I was like "hey I remember this guy from a vid somewhere". Good thing giphy cites the source. Also, congrats on hitting a million on "I live above a hobby shop" on Spotify.
I remember finding this video when I was in highschool. Ive long finished highschool and University and I still love this song. I wish i knew what happened to this guy!
2:51 I grew up seeing the passion my dad had, but he always had the headphones on, so I had a similar reaction seeing him from time to time=). Anyway, I love the exit, makes me laugh everytime, but you also have mad talent!
