They can seek assistance from forensic scientists......their role is to deliver or air the findings
Investigative Journalist mostly use social hacking.. looking for leads by talking to people who may have information or clues. But forensics use actual scene of crime clues and evidence to solve mystery, eg nails, hair, sometimes even looking at shoe pattern in crime scene to narrow down on suspects if they can prove. Forensics is a huge field, it's hard to generalized the different specialities.
