In this video I show you how I prepare a young dog for taking the Canine Good Citizen Test (CGC). I practice with them in a much more challenging environment than they will be taking the test in so that they will feel confident in successful in a much less distracting environment. The canine good citizen test is the starting point I use for putting a dog on a pathway towards service dog work. I then move on to the CGCA and CGCU.

My service dog would fail this stay because i taught him to break command after i leave 10feet or go out of sight far from him or when i am out of sight close to him for over 30s😂
Yes! Good advice! Also don’t leave your dog on his solid down-stay to help with set up. I was pulled aside and kindly warned that if a judge had seen this it would’ve been an automatic DQ. Showing you know to keep “leash on in public and dog under control at all times” is another requirement. Somehow Trip passed anyway, whew! WHAT a cute wabador… 🥰

Can you explain more about what you mean about leaving the dog in a down-stay? The exercise is a stay so I'm curious what the judge meant!
@@DoggyU Sorry Laura-I was actually referring to a “down” I put Trip into outside the ring, before his CGC test. During the actual test I believe they had us do the down-stay with Trip on a 20-foot lead which they provided. Technically dogs must be leashed at all times at this venue, inside and outside, which is a very good rule. Somehow I missed hearing about it, tho, and never guessed using my doggo’s skills so I could be helpful to others outside the ring could result in us DQ-ing for the CGC-tho that does make sense to me now.
Dr. Overall’s 15-day Protocol for Relaxation was, I think, key for helping Trip’s long stays. Love your great tip about “overtraining” in the real world-stores, etc. We should do MUCH more of that. Trip is now stressed by beeps around the cash registers so no more Lowe’s for him. 😕 🐕♥️
Also, sure love that Ruffwear vest! I want to get one for Trip and add black patches with giant white letters that read: POLITE DOG. But, being a DoggyU patron, I of course know better (gosh darn it!). 😉😇

I am training my Aussie shepherd to become a service dog for me, she’s only 8 months but smart as hell. We got heel practiced, visit (which is dpt), and other tricks. The only thing she struggles with is staying, I try and try to say stay then walk away but she always comes and follows me.🤦🏼♀️ it’s annoying😂
Hey Nadine! I think you may need to change your approach to teaching a stay. While I don't have a full video on here, I do have some tips. Use a platform, don't move away from them, but instead move around them to start, and make sure their hip is tipped. This video will be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/wvbY5t4kr4c/v-deo.html
i went from a sit, wait with a very big cue like hand held out, then a literal 2 sec wait, rewards, then start extending the times. remember they dont know what you mean by the cue yet. if they get up dont be loud, go nope and move them back to the starting position
Idk if this is illegal 4 SDits but 4 sd's having the leash attached 2 the same harness is illegal
Im saying this bc i dont want u 2 have internet backlash and im honestly curious if this also applies 2 SDits bc they're not protected by law
Hey Scorch! I'm not sure what you mean here. It's definitely not illegal for a service dog to wear a harness and leash when out working. Can you elaborate? Thanks!
SDits are protected by law in some states.

Its protected in colorado and a couple other states, I'm not 100% which other ones@@Sc0rch_
