One thing to do in Catalina that was not mentioned is to go on an evening flying fish tour. The fishes literally glide above the ocean surface at night spooked by a powerful searchlight on the boat.
Spent at least 2 weeks every summer on Catalina at a family friend's house. (Actually saw the moon landing in '69 there.) Back then, we traveled by seaplane from Long Beach and landed (or the water equivalent of landed) in Avalon harbor. Or you could go by "the Great White Steamer ", a relatively large ship. Much of the days were spent on the beach looking at the planes taking off and arriving. Great memories!

Had my high school prom at the Casino on Catalina Island. As a native Angeleno, I've been there tons of time including when they still had the S.S. Catalina which was a big steam ship you would take to get to the island. Great memories.

Love seeing Catalina Island again. Work brought me there on a weekly basis for seven months, allowing for plenty of wandering and adventures. I loved going horseback riding there, and renting a boat was always huge fun. Also had the best breakfast burrito I've ever had, at a small outdoor eatery tucked away on a side road.

Reminds me of the amazing getaways by ferry to Martha's Vineyard in Ma. Thank you Kenneth and Girlinthecurl for sharing your awesome adventure.
I know so many people from Catalina Island that said growing up all they did was drink because there was nothing else to do as a teenager.

Thanks ActionKid, Good tour, looking forward to more, the last time I was there our seafaring friends sailed from Long Beach yacht Club, night aboard their boat...that's nice! There may still be seaplanes operating as that's also a fun way to visit Catalina Island.

The brew sells coffee and beer. I lived there as a nurse for 5 years. Has its pros and cons.
To bring a car onto Catalina island you must remove a car! This keeps the number of cars at a fixed level. While living on Maui I was on the Mayors traffic committee and almost got such a law on Maui, but the Mayor was afraid it would hurt tourism! My wife’s uncle was President of the Catalina yacht club and we got to use his mooring when he wasn’t using it, it was front row just off the beach! At the time mooring were selling for $25-40k, that was 40 yrs ago, today I bet they sell for over $100k? Love the island, maybe I’ll make it back one day!

It occurs to me @ActionKid that in the entire month you spent in California you did not get an opportunity to experience one thing that all the native residents consider part of their normal lives... an earthquake! How did you get away with that?
How big is Catslina Island and how many lives there? Looks like a beautyful place! Very mutch tourists there! TC! 🖐
It's huge. The island encompasses about 76 square miles and 52 miles of coastline. It's about eight miles wide at its widest point, half a mile at its narrowest, and about 22 miles long. A little over four thousand people live on the island.

And believe it or not, they have American bison (buffalo) on the island. The legend is that they were brought over for an American Western movie to be filmed. The island was once owned by the Wrigley family, of chewing gum fame.
