  • If you've heard of the Johnny King Buck, you know that he was denied the No. 1 world-record typical title due to a Boone & Crockett scorer deeming the right G-3 as an abnormal point, despite numerous other scorers agreeing the rack was a 6x6 typical grossing more than 215 inches. In this podcast, we get on the phone with Johnny King to discuss the day he bagged this massive buck almost 20 years ago, what happened during the scoring process, and why the biggest typical ever lost a spot in the record books.

There are MANY record book bucks with similar points as King buck with zero controversy. The NH state record for just one example. There is zero justification to exclude the king bucks points when none of these other bucks points were excluded

They will protect the Milo Hansen buck for whatever reason as long as they can

This buck and the Hansen buck were both shot on a deer drive. Not a ton of hunting ability needed when you are the lucky one to have the drivers push a buck passed you.

That’s what makes it fun you do have to be lucky! And deer drives obviously work and they are the most fun way of hunting. The group effort to get it done special. Probably the most similar way of hunting as our ancestors would have done without modern guns and bows

My point was, let's not shower these 2 guys as great "hunters" when not much hunting skill was applied to harvest these bucks. Driving deer is the lowest form of hunting there is and I'm glad to see it become less popular over the last 15 years.

@@tonynienas169 Careful what you are saying. Less people doing deer drives is not good. It’s because of lack of access and people wanting to save their own deer for themselves. Hunter numbers are going down and a big part is the lack of land to hunt with family and friends. We are in a battle against those who would like to see us not hunt at all. And driving deer you should try it it’s a great way to hunt. I would say it requires just as much or more hunting skill as someone who has a big chunk of private land to hunt and just waits for one of the target bucks to show up. Be happy for the guys who got lucky enough to shoot these deer good for them no matter how they got them.

Agree to disagree. Shots at running deer are low % at best and you end up with plenty of wounded deer. Didn't the King buck get shot in the antler as well and had to be repaired? Like I said, it's shooting, not hunting. I would much rather hunt for relaxed deer in their normal patterns vs shoot 5 times at one because I saw a white tail through the woods.

@@tonynienas169 yes agree to disagree. It’s interesting that people are frowned upon for shooting ducks or pheasants that are not flying but it’s not ok to shoot at running deer. And of course it’s a skill that can be learned. I know a guy who makes shooting coyotes running at 300 yards look easy. Make deer hunting fun again bring back the deer drives and deer camp:) less about a he size of the antlers more about venison and enjoying the time hunting with a group as we have done for many thousands of years
