So many people fail to understand that speed is the reward for playing well. A good trick is to take your time to just learn a bit of the level's layout. After some practice you can do some crazy stuff because you know what's coming. Granted, I do think that Sonic games in general just naturally play so differently from other platformers so if you can't basically throw any preconceptions out the window then you're gonna have a bad time Lol
This has been a wild week. Glad to see you two are enjoying the series for the most part. And congrats on 50 episodes!

I agree. It isn’t like Mario where you beat the level once and you’ve perfected it.
Sonic encourages players to master the physics and replay levels so you get better and better

The entire "Sonic is all about speed" mentality definitely poisoned the outlook on the games.
Ther are set pieces in the zones deaigned to allow Sonic to go fast for a bit (the big downward slope tube in Chemical Plant, for example), but the ACTUAL GAMEPLAY is based on momentum and platforming.
You REALLY are meant to stop, look, think about the terrain, and explore, learn the maps and find secrets.
(Secrets being more important in CD and S3&K, but still important for collecting rings, which are required for accessing the chaos emerald and bonus stages).
Anyone who doesn't understand classic Sonic games needs to give them another try, but focus on trying to collect the emeralds and explore, and stop treating it like "speedrunning: the game".
The main thing about the speed running aspect is that you have to KNOW THE MAPS first, you can't just start the game and expect to "less than 30 seconds" clear every act.
Sonic games AFTER Adventure 2 are an entirely different mindeset.
Those are basically "quick time events without prompts...most of the time."
They're about chaining the right actions together in the slickest, most Sonic stylish way possible to earn high scores and take shortcuts.
Speed is a factor, but you can't get them S ranks without practicing the right routes and the moves you need to do and when to take them.
Classoc Sonic has high, middle and low routes, with a lot of criss crossing.
High route is low enemy, precarious platforming (easy to fall from), high rewards (many item boxes and ring hoardes).
Middle route is the "speed runners straight line", more enemies, less items, but still requires some platforming to keep momentum.
Low route is the slow-you-down high enemy, more obstacles, some rewards, but those are more "stay alive" items like shields than they will be lives or rings in high numbers.
Kit, I implore you to try hunkering down and do a 100% run (get all emeralds) of Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Try playing as Tails specifically, or at least Sonic AND Tails (use controller 2 to control Tails, or rather, have him help you find secrets) and see how you feel by the end, after getting the true ending.
I favor Sonic 2 and CD myself, and you could do Mania instead of 3&K, but I think 3&K has the best chance of showing you what Classic Sonic games are REALLY about.

It's amazing that throughout this Sonic journey, Kit realizes that his lasting feud with Sonic really just boiled down to being targeted by aggressive 90's advertising. Maybe someday they'll make up, just like how Nintendo and Sega became real chummy as soon as it became apparent Sonic sells best on Nintendo systems, and now Mario and Sonic themselves are pals.
14:25 The Master System is not another name for the Genesis (that would be Mega Drive), but rather Sega's 8-bit predecessor to the Genesis. A separate version of Sonic 1, and later Sonic 2, was made for the Master System and Game Gear (basically a portable Master System that was Sega's Game Boy competitor). Confusingly enough, these two games are totally distinct from the Genesis games you played. Fun Fact: 8-bit Sonic 2's slightly early release means Tails technically debuted there, with the plot of the game being to rescue him from Eggman. If you don't collect every Chaos Emerald, you fail to save him, with Tails's image in the stars leading to the meme that Tails dies in the bad ending. "Tails dies" also happens to be former PR guy Aaron Webber's go-to joke answer when people would ask for story details of an upcoming Sonic game.
16:06 Your pronunciations are correct: Chao is "chow", the _Chaos_ in _Chaos Emerald_ is just the English word. You're actually on the mark connecting the Chao to the Chaos Emeralds; the plot of Sonic Adventure demonstrates their ties to each other and Chaos, the water monster.
2:04:18 Uh oh, Kit just suggested adding a run button to a Sonic game, which for some reason is treated like a cardinal sin by diehard fans. Sonic Lost World has a run button and actually had some Nintendo devs on board, just like the hypothetical SNES Nintendo-made Sonic game. Sonic Frontiers might as well have a run button due to how the boost was reworked there.
2:05:23 Despite the loops and what older Western-made adaptations might tell you, the Sonic games have always taken place on Earth, albeit a more fantastical version of Earth with fictional countries. This was actually addressed in a "TailsTube" Q&A not that long ago, where it's stated that for the most part, humans like Eggman are from the mainland, while Sonic and other anthropomorphic animals hail from islands. Though there was an odd period where current Sonic head Takashi Iizuka would say in interviews that Earth and "Sonic's world" were separate and that each game takes place in one or the other (while offering no hints as to how Sonic or Eggman travels to the other's world), though none of this ever came up in the games and was discarded by the time the TailsTube vid came out.
2:20:29 "What happens when you get the Chaos Emeralds?" Whatever the plot needs to happen. The usual result of Sonic and friends getting all seven is going into a temporary super form that's fast, strong, and can fly. Eggman typically uses the Emeralds to power some crazy powerful machine. Then there's vague "chaos energy" from the Emeralds that is used to do things like handwave things like Shadow's abilities to teleport and shoot energy blasts.

Sonic the Hedgehog on the 8-bit Sega Master System is actually a completely different game from the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive elsewhere) release! Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega Master System was developed by Ancient, which is a company founded by the famous composer Yuzo Koshiro. It's crazy to think that the guy who composed for the Streets of Rage games also created the 8-bit version of Sonic!

  • @UltimateTS64

The reason why Sonic can't swim is because the creators mistakenly thought hedgehogs couldn't swim irl, but found out it wasn't true. They already had the trait established, so it just stuck and has led to the underwater mechanics you saw in Chemical Plant, though the first water level was Labyrinth Zone in Sonic 1. To survive under water Sonic has to inhale air bubbles that spawn in certain locations and appear in intervals. In Sonic 3&Knuckles and Sonic Mania you can get a bubble shield that allows you to breathe underwater indefinitely, or if you unlock Hyper Sonic by getting all 7 Chaos Emeralds and Super Emeralds (Hyper Sonic is not in Sonic Mania)

I feel like the key aspect Kit is missing is replay-ability. He seems to focus more on the classic, 2D styles games for his criticism, and a lot of those were Taylor made with replay ability in mind, especially considering that this was a day and age where you rented a game from a store for a week and you either had to face some nonsensical puzzle that would take days to solve or were done with it and there was nothing new you could do. The branching pathways of the 2D games added difficulty tiers and new ways to play, all the while encouraging faster times.

Since you inquired about the Aladdin/Robin Williams controversy, what happened there was that Robin Williams (who for context was already at a massive level of stardom in his career) actually didn't want to be credited in the marketing for the movie! He had other projects he was more invested in that he wanted to not take away from, and as a favor to the production company after his success with Good Morning, Vietnam! he only was working for the union voice actor rate instead of his normal asking fee (75,000 via SAG rates at the time vs Williams's $8 million) and he wanted his characters to not have highest billing on things like the poster and other marketing materials. Disney walked back and violated what Williams had asked for, even going so far as to use Williams' Genie recordings in ads for the movie and fast-food tie-ins and such, causing a huge rift between Disney and Williams that would only be resolved half a decade later when the new Disney Studios chairman had a public formal apology to Williams, which got Williams back to voice the Genie in the 3rd Aladdin movie (after he refused to work on Aladdin 2 and got replaced with Dan Castellaneta of Homer Simpson fame)
The Michael Jackson involvement with Sonic 3 was speculation for decades in the video game music community but actually got definitive closure in 2022. Brad Buxer (Jackson's tour director and also often compositional collaborator) confirmed that Jackson had contracted a team composed of Buxer and a few others to compose music for the game, and this was corroborated by Sonic's former father-now-felon Yuji Naka who confirmed this in early 2022 when the Sonic Origins remaster was announced to not use the Jackson tracks. This task was delegated to them to work on Jackson's behalf, and as such Jackson barely directly contributed to the resulting songs (with most speculation from Buxer and the rest of the team indicating he maybe worked on 1 of the 41 songs). A common citation of why Jackson didn't get more involved and hid his involvement with the soundtrack was that Jackson was "disappointed by how poorly the Genesis sound card captured Some of the songs that we know got used in the game are Ice Cap Zone's theme, which has its roots in a then-unreleased song from Buxer's own band, The Jetzons, which has since been released so you can really observe the similarities. You actually wouldn't hear any of these songs in the Sonic Origins rerelease of Sonic 3 as that version replaces the songs from the Jackson/Buxer collab with original demos that Sega had originally composed before the Jackson collab was finalized and had previously only existed on a PC port of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Despite the positive critical and fan reception of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the game saw extremely few rereleases compared to other Sonic legacy titles, and the speculation seemed to be that it is this rights issue with the music was the cause (not all too dissimilar from the sparse rereleases of EarthBound)

Quick Clarification: The Sega Master System was SEGA's mid-to-late '80s 8-bit console, available alongside the NES. SEGA's Game Boy competitor, the Game Gear, was essentially a portable version of this.
Outside of North America, the Genesis was called the Mega Drive.

    • @SonofMrPeanut
      @SonofMrPeanut Рік тому

On the Master System/Game Gear Sonic games: Due to the systems not quite being able to present the same kind of visual spectacle the Genesis games did, the Sonic games for those systems leaned more on the platforming. Especially in Europe where the Master System was bigger than the NES, you have a whole group of players who identify that as the Sonic style rather than the 16-bit Sonic 1/2/3&K's speed-focused gameplay.
Since I know not getting to stop and smell the super-saturated flowers of Green Hill was a sticking point for Kit, he may want to look into those Master System games.

I think I can sorta understand Kit's hang-up on the gameplay of these original 2D Sonic games... even though I grew up with them and enjoyed them... Kit's understanding of platformers traditionally allows for a more methodical and exploratory type of gameplay. Not just racing from one end of the stage to the other to complete as fast as possible like a racing to the finish line kinda game. That's what made Sonic so unique... you have to adopt to this speed mechanic to finish a level fast, platform with multiple levels and paths to get to the end, avoid enemies and hazards... and replayability. If you base you entire understanding of how platformers work in the Mario vein, yes you may have trouble understanding the Sonic approach... the speed is not a gimmick, it adds a level of challenge and sensation intensity for people who want or don't mind the things moving quickly on screen... not everybody enjoys that style of gameplay but some do. THInk of it this way... Sega is known to be basically one of the Rulers of Arcade... Sonic in many ways is like taking the super craziness of arcade games combined with platforming... it's quite an innovative idea.

  • @DJHoboMan
    @DJHoboMan Рік тому +2

Going fast in the classic games isn't the main goal; it's the reward for mastery of the physics and level design!
Sonic 1 was designed trying to capitalize on the sensation of playing through 1-1 in SMB over and over again, getting faster and faster at it. Your first couple of playthroughs of a classic Sonic game should be played like Mario games, carefully and precise. Later on, you'll fly by!
Newer Sonic games have become more about going fast from the start (the boost button). A lot of this probably had to do with leaning into various marketing things, like blast processing, the "Gotta Go Fast" song from the anime, ect. Understandably, not everyone wants to replay a game over and over again to get the speed the marketing promised. Just my perspective!

    Huh.
So Kit doesn't like the Olympic Games featuring Mario and Sonic. Funny; it was the London edition that played a part in helping my get into more Sonic games. I like to see Amy as a counterpart to Peach, Knuckles to Yoshi, Donkey Kong to Vector, and Shadow to Wario, but otherwise, I can understand a disappointment for the Mario and Sonic crossover to not be a proper adventure or RPG.
Sonic's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl came right before I made the Sonic series one of my favorites. I was sold on the Blue Blur joining the battle and enjoyed playing as him. Sure, he uses a lot of Spin Dashes, but I wasn't bothered. He's gotten stronger in following Smash games...
It is interesting to hear you guys' thoughts on Sonic.

Probably going to repeat something that someone else said, but you guys seemed a bit held up on the 2D Sonic games having large levels. Which going to be honest aren't big for exploration per se, Sonic levels are typically large due to having multiple paths you can take to get to the end, usually with the top path being the fastest while also being the hardest to stay on. This suppose to promote replayability in finding new paths and improving on your time as you learn the level. But they are also large due to the nature of his speed, when you know how these levels from front to back, you can complete them in sometimes as little at 30 seconds or shorter. At least with a first time playing a typical stage will last your more to 3 to 4 minutes, but as I said the older 2D games promote replayability to learn the level and improve your time on these levels.

    Happy belated 50th episode, YAhoo~
Most of the game advertising in the 90s was icky to me, although I'm just young enough that I wasn't aware of a lot of it and went to youtube when that became a thing to discover them. But the Nintendo vs Sega was so guns blazing that even I knew about it, and I was very firmly Team Nintendo lmao. Sonic himself didn't bother me-- I was the kind of kid who imagined fictional characters having thoughts and feelings without even thinking about it, so my brain was like "he doesn't seem mean enough to agree with this kind of thing" lmaoooo. nah, even at that age it was just the extreme dude-broish aggression and loudness that set my soon-to-be gamer girl teeth on edge more than anything.
The talk with Katie was super interesting! Plus I'm always here for featuring more women in gaming whenever possible, reasons irrelevant, so kudos to y'all on that :D

I absolutely loved this interview with Katie, she was such a saint!
Chao Garden was so fun, all my Chao went to heaven and when I tell you Sonic Adventure 2 Battle was my game, ugh I loved it soooo much! My favorite tracks were Aquatic Mine and Meteor Herd.
Y'all those Sonic Memes are HILAR but Captian Alex shared that meme that almost made me gag, I NEVER want to see that Sonic Meme ever again. My named the hedgehog was pretty cool.
    Congrats on 50 K and 50 episodes!
Soooo just to say, Sonic becomes Super Sonic which is similar to Saiyan hahaha but we call him Super Sonic. Also Amy is a hedgehog. The meme of spicy Sonic is disturbing.
I have not watched TLOU on HBO but I knew it was good because NPR is talking about it. I planned on not watching it because I LOVE the game and I don't want to be disappointed.
I believe the Switch has enough to continue until the end of 2024 but I hope by 2025 we get a new Nintendo console.
I am today years old realizing that Brawl was before your employments at Nintendo hahaha because I was curious about the reaction as employees with Sonic joining Brawl too. I guess it came out in 2008 and you two started in 2009 and 2010? I remember the rumor that Brawl would be the final Smash game hahahaha.
Krysta had me laughing when she said we don't need an equivalent to Waluigi in Sonic!
I think the success of the console is what brought Mario so much success over Sonic didn't have a console home much like Krysta was saying and sonic shifted consoles too. Sometimes I was able to play Sonic and other times I wasn't because I didn't have an Xbox or Playstation to play, I think this inconsistency hindered Sonic from keeping life long fans.

I've played Sonic game for the very beginning and have always felt there is an odd disconnect between focus on speed while the levels themselves are designed for exploration and even force players to stop and tread carefully multiple times. The two don't mesh well. In more recent years, the focus on speed has won out more than not. I have not yet played Frontiers, but judging from your stream it appears the balance between the two modes of gaming are the most in balance there ever been.

Sonic week has been so fun!!
I do hope you guys go back and play more of Sonic Adventure 1&2, and Generations.
I did laugh a little when Paper Mario was brought up, but because it's so true. Would you rather be forced to play Sonic 06 or Paper Mario Sticker Star in it's entirety.... Well, as someone who owned both, I would say Sonic 06, because as much of a glitchfest/loading screen fest game as that is, at least the core gameplay ideas were good. (They just sort of flopped the implementation)
Meanwhile you can't really polish Sticker Star, it would require a complete overhaul of it's core gameplay mechanics.
So far, from a gameplay perspective, I think Fire Emblem Engage has been so much better than Three Houses. The core of the series are the battles and the funny writing from intelligent systems, and both of those elements shine much better than Three Houses. It's sort of a return to something like fates as far as gameplay in battle goes which is absolutely my preferred style.
