- What are 10 types of tech that make cars worse? That's what we're discussing with today's guest, Ed Zitron.
Ed Zitron is an author, journalist, and podcaster. He is CEO of EZPR, a national tech and business public relations agency. We love his newsletter “Where’s your Ed At?” , which often covers tech, AI, and how both will fail to deliver.
On this show we talk about how car marketing is changing; the Fisker financial situation; why Apple's headset sucks while being amazing; why your phone isn't a great key; and more!

Ty! Ty!
Alt title: "Ed's masterclass of how to complain constantly for 20+ min monologues with 2-3 acceptable comments throughout."
I don't see what's attractive about making 90% of one's commentary about something oriented towards negativity. I think the Blog/UA-cam shtick of denigrating everything in every segment will be seen as a fad one day, and in general a somewhat dark era.
I don't care about the Apple situation with the Vision Pro, I'm not a shareholder, I haven't ever used one, but how many go-arounds do we need at seeing Apple launch a funky product, going through the whole cycle of mocking it and acting like it can't be adapted to anything (iPhone, iPad, Watch, etc), then watch it become normalized globally as the de facto choice within its particular segment, before we just accept that things like this get normalized over time? This guy's comments were copy/paste-level reminiscent of every new product-launch in a new-ish, immature segment, of the past 2 decades. I can't remember a time where I heard a monologue like this where it actually aged well.
The only asterisk I'd put on this is that the normalization of interest rates to historical levels will certainly tamp down the central income tercile's willingness to buy something like this, but I don't think anyone outside the top income quintile was actually part of the target market. Obviously they can't outright say that, but all you need to do is glance at the MSRP to see this very clearly.
There's a common misconception that when an Apple or Meta-level company launches a product, that everyone needs to get on the bandwagon in order to justify the project, but in reality all Apple, Meta, etc, need in order to justify this kind of experimentation is 0.5 to 1.5% of their overall market to buy in, and the project is justified. These companies are vast, the US has over 20 million households with over $1 million in net worth, and even a slither of those people buying in will be just fine for them. Future generations of the product, versions 3-5, will be the key generations where they start needing broader swathes of the population, but they easily have a decade of trudging along which they can easily afford, and of course they'll sustain the investment throughout that span of time given the market potential this kind of thing has on a multi-decade basis.
Shut up
Love Matt and Zack but man this guy is whiny.
Zack is the only tolerable one here
This dude is just so caustic and obnoxious and cynical it boggles my mind to think he has a career in broadcasting.
He also wants to pull Elon musk so badly it's embarrassing & ironic for a tesla owner
Tesla is doing video ads now on UA-cam, not sure if they're on broadcast or cable TV yet.
Because the first appearance was so good...
No problems here with my 1990 Honda accord... =]
i miss my '91 accord 😢
By Brad Pitt, you mean Matthew McConaghey 😊
you guys you know why your channel not growing?
because you are not dumb!!
so proud to be in the fam ✌
Great topic!
Givemethevin came up $5,000 short of Carmax for my very clean, unmodified, 2019 Fiesta ST.
How much did you get for it?
@@guenthersteiner8163 Was offered $10,800-$12,800 from GMTV. And Carmax was $15,800. So between $5,000 and $3,000 lower for my specific case. So now to get the $100 I’ll need to get the Carmax inspection done and provide them proof of a higher bid.
Can't wait for two journalists with no technical knowledge to confidently tell me all about the future of the A.I revolution
Normally love the lively discussions Matt and Zack have, but this one was a real downer with this negative nancy guest. The subject was fine - but normally there's a genuine joy in talking about automotive issues, even when pointing out the fails of particular cars.
1:01:30 I heard once that Mercedes put those harnesses in so many cars that, were they to recall them all like they should have done, they would have gone out of business in a matter of weeks
Ive got a C6 corvette that has a button to open the door. Whenever someone new rides in it. I make them open the door with the mechanical release just so they know how. Im with you guys on normal door handles.
Suggestion for a main topic, though this may already be on the list. Best hybrids. Here's a few I think are good hybrids:
Honda CR-Z, 1st-gen Honda Insight, Chevy Volt, McLaren P1, Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid
an oven doesn't automatically turn on when you put something in it lol
Matt asking for confirmation that the 50 cal punched a hole through the cyber truck is just oof
Watch all the podcasts but didn't last many minutes on this. As a Brit please don't think we are all like this guy. Sorry, couldn't listen to him
Dude is all kinds of insufferable
At least he doesn’t make racist accent jokes (like Matt)
Careful, the guy reads comments.
Last time he was on this podcast I commented about his quite unqualified perspectives and the intentionally thick laying-on of the British accent to impress Americans.
He replied to express his displeasure about my comment 😂.
Great episode guys!
New cars just suck nowadays, and I feel that whole situation with GM sharing driving data with insurance firms is the epitome of this trend.
Holy hell, the Tesla bots are out in full force not even an hour after the episode is posted. As a true car & tech enthusiast, 5 minutes in & I'm hooked. Don't let the trolls diminish how interesting and informative this episode is. Same as the Phillip Koopman episode....excellent topic, excellent guest. Keep it up guys!
Was totally shocked to see a givemethevin ad after what John did to matt
I’m never letting go of my 2014 Jetta.
Can we just try to create the casual non-intrusive tech world in 'Her'
Great podcast, love Ed
Really like podcasts like these as someone who is not in the know it’s very informative keep it up!
My position is getting outsourced to India right now so I don't care if the statement makes SOME people feel uncomfortable! It IS happening and has been for YEARS.
The truth hurts sometimes but it still the true...
Yes, you signed your life away to all these tech companies. It is not too late, put your phone down and go outside.
It's amusing the people that keep coming back to these to comment about Matt being liberal and hating on Tesla. Like walking into a Mexican restaurant and telling everyone you hate tacos.
I think some of it is his really longtime listeners that have to realize that talking politics is almost unavoidable nowadays whereas 10 years ago things weren’t usually brought up unless it directly related to cars. But yeah, there have been quite a few times where Matt explaining something actually made it racist rather than just moving past it but I really don’t care. I listen to reruns of Cum Town all day so I will see myself out 😂😂😂
Id even say he's a leftist, I can see big man owning a few guns and such.
@@VS666 I'm gay
For real. I don't go to Alex Jones podcast and complain that he's too right wing or Joe Rogan's podcast to complain that he's a lunkhead. What's the end goal? Lol
The majority of the time his political beliefs don’t seep into the conversation. The issue is that he’s so far down the commie rabbit hole and he doesn’t walk the walk. Like most children born w/ silver spoons he likes to tell others how they should live while not doing those things himself. The LA bubble he lives in is not representative of the vast majority of the country.
Love Ed Zitron. His podcast 'Better Offline' is really good.
The gentleman doesn’t have Brad Pitt lol
Another great guest and podcast gentlemen.
Mum, don’t come in I’m Podcasting!!
Great guest. Always enjoy ED Enjoy listening to him talking about different topics
Great guest, great podcast. Keep up the good work fellas
another hilarious episode and guest, this is some top level dunning kruger comedy
good topic
Timestamps?!!
Why are you all shitting on this? I came to the TST podcast for car talk years ago but stayed for all the side bar convos. Thanks for broadening my interests.
matt, ed, please ignore all the comments from what sounds like (but may not actually be) the majority of people who are happier to constantly take shit from from the world than have to suffer the indignity of hearing intelligent people about how it is indeed shit. no shit it's a downer to hear about how stuff sucks!
Was it the shifter that was the problem or the fact she was 3 times the legal limit for BAC? You decide.
it's never just one thing, but clearly the swipey shifter does not help
AI is great if you know how to use it and use it for the right thing. MS copilot is a great tool. Just remember it's a tool, not an answer.
More of a complainer than a critic.
Ed is brilliant and hilarious. This was a good episode if you’re tech skeptical.
I went out of my way to come here. To clarify 'out of my way' I moved to the US 18 years ago to avoid people like this guy. Then, I came here to tell that boring story just to ensure how qualified I am to say that this was awful. Truly, poke needles covered in piss into my eyes awful.
Nice
That accent comment. Yikes. Matt your defense for it sounded like boomer logic.
This is a car podcast, but I find the Apple Vision Pro conversation interesting. This product wasn’t made for the masses. It was like Tesla FSD. A product that only enthusiasts and reviewers will buy until they can make a product for all customers
Guest that RUINED podcast
They are definitely wrong about chat GPT and other AI. It is definitely going to be the next best thing. Same with Apple vision. Image when they can put that same device in a pair of Ray Bans
It needs to be made abundantly clear to all corporations that the property ceases to be theirs when the end user pays for it and takes possession. There is no reason GM should be selling driving data to insurance companies. And to take it back one step, there is no person they should be monitoring or have OTA access to anything in the vehicle. And if the owner brings it into the dealership for service, they should have to opt in to sharing that data. This shit has gone way too far.
Hope this is better than his first appearance.
Nope
paying more to insure property in a bad neighborhood isnt racist. its just math.
You can’t talk about facts to these two. But car manufacturers should not be seeking data to insurance companies. It ceases to become their property when you pay up and take possession.
Funny how he called that racist and clowned on an accent different to his western one.
I'm here
"I think ChatGPT is stupid", said the guy with limited knowledge of the tech (if any), said the guy who gets confused by infotainment screens, said the guy who made a career out of namedropping. Best to stay in your lane and let the people who are equipped with the right knowledge express their public opinion on ChatGPT. While the real-world scenarios that ChatGPT can actually contribute are extremely limited, the tech and the amount of work that its creators put in creating it is impressive. It has allowed large scale companies reduce the amount of monkey work they use to spend the time and money on and allowed people with ideas, to work on their ideas, instead of writing endless summaries of meeting minutes. Play with your sponsors, review your cars, boast about your connections and the places you've been invited to and leave the tech stuff to the people who know and can expand on their opinions. "I think ChatGPT is stupid" is simply disrespectful.
ChatGPT as an idea is very cool and has potential but it’s fallen on its face with what I’d say are a lot of pretty basic prompts
@@bvedant there's no debate on that. There's also no debate that even if it is on version 3 or 4 this is still Gen One technology. Matt like to make big statements (look at the Cybertruck incident) and then he's "falling on his face" (follow up apology video). To be fair he usually owns up to his mistakes but it is sad to see that his primal and unique first reactions are to call a technology stupid, with total disregard of the hard work of the people behind it. Then, as with all technologies, when ChatGPT or its variations are used in a focused and targeted way, they can be really helpful. If one thinks that ChatGPT will solve world hunger from the get go (hyperbole to make my point) then we should start wondering who really is stupid, the users or the technology.
Wow this Ed guy sucks, and he brings the absolute worst out of Matt.
Never pressing another start button ever again. Not doing it and you can't make me. Its bullshit busy work.
bruh...
I’m never using a door handle in my house ever again. I want my doors to open automatically when I get near them. I can’t be bothered to use a door handle, it’s busy work
@@guenthersteiner8163 ok, you sound exactly like a bot.
No one has answered this. What do you do if you want to leave your car running while you go into a store if the car shuts off automatically?
@@GODOFGUITAR2112 It's generally not a good idea to do that anyway.
Anyone could hop in and drive off. It's pretty dangerous really, and you're actively discouraged from doing it so I doubt it's ever become a feature tbh
Did not like the guest, added nothing to the conversation, and kept swearing every two seconds with little value added.
Not your best work, Matt
Gave it a try. Can’t do it.
What?
Who asked?
thank god the world doesn't revolve around you
The glee on Matt's face over a woman drowning because it happened in a Tesla, and she was tangentially related to Trump is absolutely fucking disgusting,
Thats how they are.
You know what else is disgusting? Selling a fraudulent, broken, and misleading "self-driving" technology that kills people and doing nothing about it.
Typical democrat
They didn't even do that though? He was laughing because of how stupid it is that this situation even happened, if there was a physical handle or a physical window opener, this wouldn't have been a problem.
Lol you Chumpers are ❄️. Nothing of value was lost both the car and the "human". It's called consequences: she should have not been drunk behind the wheel .
Complains about tech being stagnant and not building cool new things; not 5 minutes later: "ugh Cybertruck why not just keep making boring cars?!?"
Tell me you lack critical thinking without telling me.
Both things can be true
@@VetranoDIt’s more so you lacking in those faculties. New things are different. That’s reality. New things are not refined, they take years of development and testing to work and he wants the best of both worlds where the product is produced in a finished state with zero jankiness (His whining about the Apple Vision Pro) and that it’s different while feeling familiar. He has equated complaining about flaws, change and approaching those things with a healthy dose of skepticism as being intelligent when in reality it’s just being risk averse and living in a world where people don’t actually criticize him often, because most new things fail. So he’s right often, because that’s the probabilistic reality.
In short. He’s a pussy.
In the Cybertruck cool? I definitely don’t think so. It’s an ugly dangerous vehicle that shouldn’t be on the roads for many reasons.
This guy is online s-posting, virtue-signaling, woker-than-thou culture come to life.
CYBER MATT
Ugh I made it 3 minutes before the woke California bullshit turned me off.
Thats "Cyber Matt" for you
And yet you still pay attention to the channel. Why?
@@tyvekhomewrap9164 Outrage culture. Disagreement drives more engagement than agreement. The algorithm knows this and capitalizes on it.
can you actually explain what is "woke California" is? Because it seems everyone just uses this to display their superiority while disagreeing without any facts.
Snowflake Chumpers are mad 😂
Get a horse if you're frightened by electric windows.
