I wrote to Elliot Easton (Lead Guitar: The Cars) about this bass line. Ric Ocasek receives all the writing credits and, as a song writer myself, wondered how this was presented to the band. It seemed to me that this song must have been written on bass. That said, I understood most of Ocasek's Cars demo's were usually a guitar and vocal track. On occasion (Drive for example) they being constructed around a keyboard line. Easton stated that Ocasek gave this to the Cars as a keyboard and vocal framework. In other words, that beautiful bass line is all Benjamin Orr. Not to mention the brilliant Drum signature changes supplied by David Robinson and Elliot Easton's white hot solo. This is straight from Easton via a private message. Thank you Elliot!
This is one the Cars hiiden gems. Eastons sweet solo on this one reminds me of Lindsey Buckinghams solos in "Hold Me" Orr was a brilliant singer/songwriter. If you havent heard his solo song "Little Mind Working" give it a listen.
This is a real guitar solo! Although it might sound a little bit too flashy, for me it has the most original guitar licks I have ever heard. Been listening it for years and it still haunts me like the first time I heard it. Putting so many country licks in a 80s hit.. sounds crazy but the result is brilliant.
Yes, definitely. John Lennon mentioned that he liked this song in his last interview, shortly before his death. He could hear the rockabilly and Buddy Holly influences, underneath all the flash and synths.
I remember seeing the Cars do this live on "Fridays" back in the day - I was blown away how well they performed this tricky, at least for me, song. The bass line for this tune has always been one of my favorites - it reminds me of the bass line for "Walking On The Moon" - so tough to count correctly. This video helped a lot - Ben Orr would have tip his hat to you on this one! This band was just filled with amazing musicians and that really made them special... so unique!
One of my favorites, love that song... the rhythm changes, that guitar solo and such a nice bass part. Great job and great selection Constantine, love those slides
Constantine, this video made me finally bite the bullet and order my first bass after mulling the idea for years. Now I can’t wait to learn this song from your video. Thank you!
I find it easier to follow the 5/4 beat of the drums and bass, than the 4/4 of the keyboards and vocals. I have no idea how Ric Ocasek knows when to start singing. It's totally disorienting . . . which I love. Ric and Benjamin had some Prog-Rock influences, before forming the Cars.
You know what's a great bass line? It's so simple, but "Wouldn't It Be Nice". The main bass line is ||: F-F-F-G| F-D-C-D | Bb-Bb-Bb-A | G-G-C-D :|| . . . but then, the bridge switches from F major to D major, and the bass gets really fluid.
The cars? I don't think I can remember you ever covering these guy's.... Great band from the 80's that probably didn't get the props that they deserved. A Great band with alot of talented musicians in it. Cheers.
Another great job on another fun group to play bass too! Love getting their greatest hits out and playing along to every song! Always thought this one had a Country Western sound to the bass line>! Especially on the Chorus!
I still have nightmares from doing this song. Off and on during the song, those off beats really play on you. Total focus was needed on my part. Awesome song to cover. Thanks for watching

That's exactly what it is, during the pre-chorus and chorus. Root, fifth, root, fifth -- that's a common element of C&W!
Dude, so awesome. Thank you so much for the chart, it's excellent.
