  • PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan is in a public state of denial about whether LIV Golf is competitive golf at its highest level. This video breaks down whether the PGA Tour is intentionally spreading lies and misperceptions about LIV Golf and also challenges whether Jay Monahan is a hypocrite when ridiculing LIV Golf when it comes to its depth of field.
You'll hear Jay Monahan speak in June 2022 at the RBC Canadian Open, again in September 2022 at the TOUR Championship at East Lake, and finally at the 2022 President's Cup in September 2022 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. This will be balanced by comments from both Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith following their 2022 LIV Golf wins at LIV Golf Boston and LIV Golf Chicago respectively.

History of golf competition? When did it start? How has it changed, improved? PGA Tour started?
1800’s, matchplay to stroke play, galleries, larger prizes, Trophy Belts to Dollars/Pounds, Jack and Annie rebellion 1960/70 to start PGA tour, more money, LIV golf, music, shorts, shotguns, teams. Now what’s next in the on going development of golf around the world? Let’s not stop where we are and stand still, let’s keep on improving and developing, otherwise we would still be wearing collar and ties with attached jacket just like Old Tom Morris, step into the 2030’s, 40’s and 50’ Jay.

The PGA is between a rock and a hard place I'm sure. But shooting Golf's best players and shooting itself in the foot is not the way to go. They should have already worked out deals with LIV and Greg Norman, kissing Norman's feet or ring. Instead, they fight to keep their monopoly and in the process screw God only knows how many Golfers in foreign Countries. "Pure, true competition!" according to Jay Monahan. From what little I've seen on this, many golfers with professional aspirations around the World are purely and truely pissed off! As they should be.

Great stuff. This content subject is very fascinating. The PGA Tour is making significant changes as fast as they can. But LIV Golf, especially Phil and Greg Norman, exposed just how greedy the tour is, and how little they actually put into the players pockets, and everyone now knows it. The tour was full of have and have nots. The line Jay has drawn in the sand was a very bad mistake. He's either got to change his rhetoric or he needs to go. Because the future of the tour rests on how well they find a way to co-exist with LIV Golf. LIV is true competitive golf, both individual and team. And it is exciting. Believe me, there is plenty of money in both tours to provide more competition and more money for all of the players. LIV will grow a larger audience once they get a TV deal, and they will. At that point the revenue sources will take care of itself, with or without Saudi investment. Better wake up Jay! Freedom to choose, freedom to compete, is always good. I'm always wary of people and organizations that don't want that competition. Monopolies are not good, as they work vigorously to prevent competition.

If Tiger calls the chairman of the Board of the PGA and says "I want Monahan out!" How long would it be before they put a new CEO in his place? A matter of days? A week? I wonder if Tiger has already made some hints that he would like to take over the PGA?

Monahan is like a Hollywood exec, he doesn't care or see anything outside of US. I'm from Australia, we used to get 7-8 top 20 players come down play our 'majors' Aus Masters etc, I followed Tiger & Day play in a group back in 2009..Monahan's decisions & prev PGA president crippled Aus, Asian, parts or Europe & no big names come to Aus anymore..LIV wants to get the global market, that's why Aus PGA president told Monahan he's allowing LIV players to our summer this yr...incl Cam Smith (playing first Aus PGA in 3 yrs) and Australian can't wait. That's where Monahan will lose all other parts of the world he abandoned. PS Liv is organising a tournament in Aus 2023 or 24..ill go!

@Alan Parkee, this is a really thoughtful comment, thank you so much for sharing your perspective. I've had the chance to spend a fair amount of time in Australia and I genuinely enjoyed every minute of it, and, I had the chance to walk 18 holes with Cam Smith as he defeated Patrick Canlay at the World Golf Championships match play event in Austin and Cam (and his caddie too) were so pleasant and complete gentlemen. We can all learn and grow when we get beyond our own borders. Thanks for stopping by the channel, I hope you subscribe and share more comments in the future! 👍

2 solutions, first and easiest for pga tour is drop the bans and maintain status quo. I think over time this would likely wither away LIVs relevance. Solution 2 is to give the liv tournaments OWGR points and let then stay banned from the pga tour. I dont see any coexistence of both tours without either one of those 2 scenarios in place.

@endogenic, really appreciate your thoughtful comment, I think it's spot on. Your first solution should absolutely be put in place for guys like Phil Mickelson who have earned lifetime exemptions to the PGA Tour. Thanks for stopping by the channel!

If I was a top player I would want to do what Monahan says, the players are going to play more tournaments, etc. Yes, including LIV.

  • @oahujuniorgolfassociationc6656

I can write books in these comment sections but I’ll just say we agree on most of this. Golf has been associated with the Saudis for a while but when they wanted to literally pour billions into the sport; the powers that be in the sport decides no?
No for about a dozen much needed events? Events that would close the gap between what top golfers make to other sports. Events that would bring more of the best together around the globe; smaller but fields like the wgcs. A refreshing team concept. A very much more digestible format for viewers on tv.
They were willing to work together.
Monahan neither worked with them well, didn’t kept them away nor compromised well. I’ve made clear what I think of that guy. He was picked nearly two decades ago by the last guy. The Tour needs to find someone who is doing great things today to lead them. And in some ways the Tour unofficially have upgraded some at Commish with tiger and deputy Rory.

@Oahu Junior Golf Association Channel, appreciate the wide-ranging thoughtful comment! I like your perspective with the nod to field size similar to "wgcs", World Golf Championships being events only the top 64 players in the world are invited to play in, and that being a strength. I don't think I've heard anyone turn LIV Golf's field size into a strength, I like it, super positive and constructive!
I can say from experience volunteering at the WGC Match Play event the atmosphere is fantastic. LIV has a leg up on the Match Play event in the sense that once you get out of group play starting Saturday morning, there are simply not that many golfers on the course, whereas there's no cut with LIV so you've got a small field but the field is there for the entire course of the event.

@@creasergolf Match okay is amazing. All they need are more consolation matches like a 5th and 7th place matches.
The drama of match play makes up for lack of players. If done correctly match play could be used a lot more.
And tigers not even playing. Without tiger who cares who doesn’t make it to Sunday. The 4 remaining matches can have anybody but tiger and be about the same entertainment.

Why don't you ask Pat Perez about competition and competing? Ask Gooch, DJ, and Fatty Reed how they like carrying Pat Perez? Ask Commissioner Norman why Official World Ranking points seemed like an after thought. What did he tell Sergio about world ranking points. Why did most LIV golfers drop out of the anti trust lawsuit filed against the PGA Tour? How does Norman feel about not being invited to the QBE Shootout, a tournament he started? Or missing the 150th anniversary of the Open Championship?

The only thing I agree with you on is Monaghan can be polarising but not anywhere to the extent that Norman is. This is an invitation-only closed shop so there is very limited competition and some of the LIV arguments belong to the Donald Trump school of rhetoric.

@Maurice O'Reilly, appreciate you weighing in! Would be neat to better understand what the first 6 months of the PGA Tour looked like, how big were the fields, what was the on-ramp, etc. - is that what you're talking about when you say LIV is "very limited competition"? What's an example of a LIV argument that uses the school of rhetoric you're referring to?

Yes most top players make more people to watch golf. So that's why liv golf offered millions of dollars in the face of good golfers to bribe the players to sign contracts to play live. Now they made a decision to leave PGA. Why are they trying to go back to PGA players want to win majors. But liv players won't allow PGA players to go to your tornments why should PGA allow liv play on there tour. All the crying from overpaid players your choice live with it your not wanted on PGA tour never again
