  • Circa 1998 - 3 Minute 26 Second Video from the Hwy 2 Rest Area which is 2 miles west of the I-75 Interchange after coming across Big Mac. The video scans west from St. Helena Island Lighthouse passing Waugoshance Point & Skillagalee Island to White Shoal Light. Still photos & video shot on two back to back days, the 2nd of which was with strong winds. Captured with a 1st generation Canon XL-1 Video Camera, a 7X Video Converter mounted to a Canon EOS 400mm 2.8L Series II Telephoto Lens with a 2X Extender. The portion with the short freighter passing St. Helena's Island which pans back to a wide angle was shot with the camera & standard lens alone. The telephoto lens was mounted to a large Bogen Ball Joint Head on a HD video tripod. The video camera itself was supported by a separate monopod. Even so, there was considerable shake & stuttering caused by heavy winds & the hand cranking of the tripod while panning. White Shoal Light was 17.1 miles west of my shooting location & virtually invisible with the naked eye. The St. Ignace I-75 Mackinaw Bridge interchange was 2.2 miles directly behind me. If using Google or Bing Maps and you draw a line from St. Ignace to White Shoal, the line passes almost directly thru St. Helena Island just to the right of the St. Helena Island Lighthouse. The distance from the I-75 interchange to White Shoal Light is 19.3 miles. The distance from the rest area on Hwy 2 is approximately 2.2 miles closer. Viewers will definitely notice heat distortion at these distances which are the same as if you were watching a race car running at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
