Hi man, your works are amazing! I'm a beginner blacksmith and I made some simple emboss copper design but I'd like to improve my skills. Can you help me, what is that melting material which you usually use under the plate? And I wondered is there any book or something about this work? Thank you for your videos, they are inspiring! Keep up the amazing work! :)

Thanks for you kind words Máté! The material backing the metal is called pitch or chasers pitch. There are quite a few books out there on the subject of this medium. Some are an overview of the technique and references for how it's been used in history. More educational geared resources are not as common in books and a little easier to find online follow along projects for training in the art form.

Thanks for checking up on me!
I still make a lot of video's but focused the best content for Patreon. I recently finished a 12 part series for an advanced educational project there that took most of my editing time to complete last year. I'm only one artist and I do all of my own business work, advertising, filming and editing, and all the other different roles a self employed artist must be to survive. So thank you for your encouragement in getting more video's out there and thank you for your patience while I do the work.
      Cheers!

Do you think that a thin sheet metal would be good to start off with? I can sheet metal at the local box store for cheap. It

I generally recommend 1mm thick material for folks just starting out. That is a good thickness to learn in Ferris or non Ferris metals.

May I ask if clay be used as substitute for embossing?

I have heard of folks using Chavants NSP modeling clay as a substitute, it's not my preference but I have been assured that it works.

What gauge copper did you start with that enabled you to raise the material that high? Love your work, learning alot from you videos. Thanks for posting them.

I was using 18ga (about 1mm) copper for this piece, I did this pattern twice and with both times I used the same gauge. I've used 1mm thick metal a lot so it's easy for me to predict where problems may occur before they happen. I want to explore a little more and not have to worry so much about the thickness so much so now that I feel experienced enough with 18ga I'm going to start switching up to 16ga.
Stay in touch Andy and thanks for the kind words about my work!

@@westcoastgio6328 one of the times you repaint it (just a thought I had) it'd be awesome to find someone who specializes in monster movie makeup and see what they could do with it? Go full realistic manbat, could be fun for a seasonal job/photo shoot. :)
