Like Aizen hinted back in the original Bleach, the Soul King is nothing but a living corpse. He is simply a central pillar for reality, so he’s more of an object rather than an actual character
I was just about to type something similar. I hope by the end of the series they answer the mystery of why he allowed himself to become that way.

Ichigo being a group project is honestly some next level stuff. You have Aizen being responsible for Isshin and Masaki meeting, Ginjo with the Fullbring shenanigans, while Yhwach just sees it from the distance knowing that it will all come down to this episode
Yhwach is the guy in the group project that does nothing to pitch in but takes all the credit

What Sheera said about why do anything if you know he can see everything thats going to happen. Thats probably why Yhwach didnt use his Almighty against Ichigo initially. It made Ichigo more confident in his own abilities and he got a taste of the idea that he is strong enough to win against Yhwach. So of course he would continue to try after.

@@lotusinn3 more like it's perception of "real" futures and Yhwach is just choosing to see the ones that are relevant to the timeline that is convenient for him to follow and then an added bonus is that he can use his base Quincy powers and schriffts to attack and affect things in those soon to happen or late to happen futures and by doing so it looks like you can't fight back but honestly all you need to do to beat him is be Ichigo and take the fight seriously (unlike what he just did here) before he reaches his EOS state or be massively stronger to the point where Yhwach's understanding of your powers are inaccurate causing him to fail in his initial attempt at killing you and then speed blitz one shot. But those are some nigh-impossible things to do barring maybe one alive character right now.
so you guys are kind of missing a bit of what was explained in this episode. Basically the Soul King literally becomes a literal and physical plot device to create the three worlds. Yhwach hated him for doing that, and on top of that, the Soul King foresaw the fate of himself losing his body parts and becoming this crystallized torso and the quincies and still let everything play out. Which included the near extermination of the quincies, the primary reason he hates his dad. The soul king's body parts are basically not around anymore and we know that Ichibei had one iof the soul king's arms, but then Yhwach took it. In doing so, Ichibei sealed the almighty from Yhwach for a while (this was from last season).

I've always wondered how EXACTLY did he seal the A? In the black and white flashback I saw exactly what happened but my brain just can't comprehend it. Was it some sort of special vow or something

To provide context to Roshi and the comments, the soul kings can be more considered an entity in physical form. And without spoiling, he's missing body parts for a reason. I think all manga readers were expecting a character who would put up a fight when he was first revealed, but if you listen to the lore closely, it explains the soul king's powers and why he's in the state he's in.

Absolutely loving the anime additions and updates. They’re doing a phenomenal job with this.
Yhwach's power explained (as of last episode, so NO SPOILER):
The Almighty:
1) He can see the future
2) Everything that he sees, he "knows"
3) Everything that he "knows" is POWERLESS before him and CANNOT kill him / harm him
This combination makes him invincible in theory.
("Knows" is referring to him comprehending everything within the future he can see, so basically he can comprehend all that he sees in the future and that cannot kill him)
IN CONCLUSION: All that he looks at (including the future he can see) is POWERLESS before him. Closest thing to a god in Bleach
The attack Ichibe used last ep, was seen by Yhwach in the future and so Ichibe couldn't kill Yhwach with it.
And let's not forget the real op application and threat of this ability. Can't wait to see the shock faces😆
Yhwachs power summarized in the simplest form is that he can see every possible future timeline and can freely choose which one to use, essentially making him immortal as he can just nullify any damage by choosing a timeline in which he didn't get hit etc.

@@fangyuan5964 He actually kinda does jump to whichever one is more convenient for him as he explained it to Ichigo in their final showdown, the only thing is he didn't use those exact words but rather he explained to Ichigo that the future is like countless grains of sand scattered before him and each grain represents a possible future and so "The Almighty" allows him to choose between those grains of sand so basically "The Almighty" is not the power to see the future but instead it's the power to alter it.
Ichigo really can't stop being a conventional "free real estate" item for these villains 😭

This whole time I thought the soul kings eyes were star shaped. Now I can see it is basically 4 iris in each eye like roshi pointed out. Damn, how did I never know that!
Yeah the soul kings lore goes hella deep sadly it was only getting expanded in the CFYOW novels and not the bleach manga. So spoilers (sort of)
The soul king also did have the All mighty and could see the future(spoiler)/Futures. just like Ywach.
However his very existence put the universe at a imbalance because in that time there was only a single realm holding humans .hollows .soul reapers. A universe without a life and death cycle
He could even see himself being dismembered and his organs being taken out by ichibei. However seing how this would bring balance be accepted it. this was conciderd in bleach “the first sin” basically the great 5 families jumped the soul king took of his legs cut of his arms and because they didn’t feel like the soul king would accept being sealed to create the 3 realms they took out his organs so he is always in a state of not either being alive nor dead so for over 100 million years the soul king was just being alive yet not dead.
This is why Ywach was so mad at the soul reapers and also wanted to kill the soul king he felt that the soul reapers had humiliated his father for millions of years.
Fun fact: Ichibei existed before the soul king did and played a big role in killing him.
Sad fact: SPOILER
In the end after ywach is defeated he gets the same fate as his father becoming the new soul king and if ywach. Wasn’t able to become the soul king Ichibei would have made ICHIGO the soul king by cutting his legs and arms of and taking out his organs without his consent.
Basically Ichibei is the most evil character in Bleach
And it seems also: SPOILER
Even Ichibei (and by extension the Soul Society as a whole) will eventually pay for sealing the Soul King. Something else is supposed to happen in the future, their judgment for dismembering and sealing the Soul King. It’s yet to be revealed, but…

On the Soul King, if you notice through the flashbacks it's shown that the guy has no more limbs, they usually fall off him due ah... something that is super spoilery. So as Yhwach says, the king is nothing more than a sacrifice at this point and a figure head. Even Aizen, Mayuri and Kisuke don't refer to him as a real person sometimes.

The soul king is in a state where he is neither alive or dead. He foresaw everything that is to happen so in order to keep the worlds in balance he uses himself as the keystone.
These anime additions really elevated Yhwach character by giving him clearer motivation and more depth compared to his manga counterpart and depending on how things go in the anime he might surpass Aizen as the best villain of the series.

That is why he tries to save him no matter what. All his attention was focused on this. Plus, I got the feeling that after the Irazusando, Ichigo became an instrument for protecting the order of the universe.

I don't think this a huge spoiler, but it's not really elaborated until the "Can't Fear Your Own World" Light novel", so this is just for clarity & context.
So orginally there was one world, but it was complete chaos, Hollows were running around eating humans & there was no cycle of life & death. The only being that was capable of doing something was the Soul King.(I forgot how, but he inadvertently made the situation worse). A group of people(The original 13th Court Guard Squad) did something about & "Killed" the Soul King(Yes, he could have easily wipe them but he foresaw the future & decided that the current world of Bleach was better, so he let it happen). The world was split into three parts: The "Soul Society", "Hueco Mundo," & "World of the Living". This separation provided order: Humans dies they can either pass on to the Soul Society or become a Hollow, Soul Reapers "Slays" Hollows but the soul of a Hollow gets reincarnated(Unlike Quincies who completely erased them, thereby removing them from the cycle of death & rebirth).
This is pretty much Yhwach's beef, the Soul King willing chose a future that works for Soul Reapers, Hollows, & Humans, but Quincies were incompatible with the current world of Bleach and pretty much not needed & left out( And also displaying his father mutilated corpse as a trophy).
I wouldn't say the Soul King was "Dead" up till this point just more in stasis.
You got one thing wrong. I’m pretty sure the Gotei 13 didn’t really exist when this happened, but they are not who cut him up. It was the heads of the Noble Houses plus Ichibei; Shihoins, Kuchikis, Shibas, and the Tsunayashiros. Idk how much of this we’ll actually get in the anime though

Ichigo (or rather ICHIGOAT) is the undisputed King of Get Backs.
Whatever gets done on to him, he pays his opponents, enemies and rivals back in full. Now granted the arc isn’t over yet so the plot must thicken.
After all these years, We finally get the official name of the Soul King: Adnyeus (or as it should be spelled, Adonaeus) is an archon of Gnosticism as Gnostic mythology representing the Sun and responsible for keeping mortal souls bound to Earth.
So Here’s the Lore breakdown: The Soul King is a natural amalgamation of everything, the only other one like that is Ichigo which is why he’s the only one who can kill him and why Aizen wanted him to fully mature as the main puzzle piece of his plans. Aside from that, Now Back in Ep 25 as part of the finale of cour 2 last year, Yhwach did an incantation chant known as the Auswählen (German for Selection) and goes as follows-
“Raise Them! Silver emblems, Ashen meadows, circular path buried in light. Eye of Agate, tongue of gold, skullcap, coffin of Adnyeus. The object we raise is your heart.”
Casually saying “Coffin of Adnyeus” which would be the Coffin of the Sun (more specifically in the crystal structure that he’s trapped in) trapping away light the same way Yhwach traps power, burying and sealing away light, and when Yhwach opens it and takes forth the heart of the Sun (which the ball in his hands resembles, in the sense that it appears like a singularity or neutron star), he then uses it’s powers over light and souls, which is exactly what the Auswählen is: Beams of light that snatch souls/the power of souls from still living bodies and move them somewhere else.
He also mentioned other specific terms like “Eye of Agate” which is a particular type of Agate (quartz like mineral) that has a circular banding pattern when cut in a cross section, This could be a reference to the circular band shape the Auswhalen makes before it's activated.
'Silver emblems' could be referring to the quincies, because they always use silver emblems, such as their crosses and medallions.
'tongue of gold' refers to the ancient Egyptian practice of giving the dead amulets of gold shaped like tongues so that they could speak in the court of Osiris in the afterlife. Oriris was the judge of the dead, so perhaps this line has to do with the user of Auswählen judging who will have their life taken and who will be spared.
'Skull cup' could be referring to the use of a skull cup in Hindu & Buddhist rituals, including ones to achieve a transcendental state of mind in the shortest time possible. Basically referring to Auswählen allowing power to be given and quickly
'enlighten' or empower the receivers.
'Ashen meadows' refers to Hueco Mundo/hollows because it mostly consists of endless dunes/meadows of ashen sand. This would leave Humans/Shinigami or the Living World/Soul Society to be referenced by 'Circular path buried in light' if the pattern holds, also refrring to the circular light of the Auswählen itself. It’s the job of the soul reapers being balancers and Gnostic Archons of their universe, keeping and overseeing souls bound to the endless cycle of life, death, and rebirth as the 3 cycles represented in these 3 realms.
In the beginning of the episode, he uses a sacrificial technique known as ‘Triplet World’ (universe realms in this case) separating the 3 main realms, in front of a young Yhwach in this chaotic but apparently calm primordial cosmic ocean or celestial river of when the universe was one.
Yhwach simply wants to return everything to that status quo for further reasons yet to be revealed, for now it’s that he feels ashamed/embarrassed for the seemingly lifeless comatose state that his father the Soul King is in, being used as a mere Keystone stabilizer and the Quinces getting the short end of the stick throughout history.

Not alive and also not dead, but somewhat conscience.
Loving the additions to the lore and fights and I can't wait to see more..
also remember from the previous season during ichigo trial and based on Yhwach own words the king is just a linchpin holding all of the realities together.. he is honestly more of a prisoner than anything... just limbless and trapped
One of the things I assumed from the manga is the Soul King is effectively catatonic. His only input is to maintain the separation between worlds which seems to occur innately.
You have to keep in mind alot of this is happening in the span of an instant. Yeah Yhwach was saying “I know you can pull this out” but all of this is happening at the same time Ichigo pulled it out. Its all just slowed for dramatic effect. So by the time Yhwach even said it, Ichigo had already pulled it out. Same when Lupa asked why nobody stopped Ichigo. Its slowed down for dramatic effect but manga wise you see Ichigo INSTANTLY slashed the Soul King. There is no slowly cutting through the Soul King. Thats just added in to build tension in the anime
Also for the Soul King, he’s essentially just a thing at this point. He’s there to hold shit together. It is spoilers to explain HOW he ended up like that but just know, he wasn’t in a position to do anything. He was a lynchpin.

Well you gotta keep in mind roshi you probably haven't read the manga in years. We barely got anything related to the soul kings past in the manga. All of the info we had was in the light novels cfyow but the anime in cour 2 and 3 has given us so much more details and insight than even we could've imagined. And from what the directors and kubo have said we're still gonna get more lore and answers about the soul king and the vision's Ichigo saw in irasusando in cour 3 and 4.
The reason why soul king doesn't actually do anything should be explained later in detail. It's a spoiler to say it all. But they did mention in part 2 that Quincy King wanted to destory his dad Soul King because he doesn't like what they've reduced him to. He exists in the state that he's in solely because of actions that took place long ago. We see that harming him this episode affected all three worlds.
Ichigo was never given an explanation about The Almighty so he wouldn't have a clue that Yhwach was baiting him to pull the sword. We as viewers, knew what was happening but that's only because we saw it with Ichibei vs Yhwach and got an explanation on how The Almighty worked. The real question is, why didn't Ichibei warn him about the Almighty before they confronted him.

People were fooled thinking ichigo went to the Royal palace to be trained to fight Ywach he was trained to become the next soul king that is why in the anime exclusive scene last season when hes walking throughout the thing ichibei sent him to,we see ichigo with the all mighty because all soul kings have the all mighty

From what I understand, a lot of why the Soul King was so underwhelming is justified in the light novel Can't Fear Your Own World. And there are actually hints sprinkled out in this and the previous episode, but you'd need to be very familiar with the manga to notice the subtle additions added into the anime.
There’ve been hints all over since the first time we ever saw him but anybody on a first time watch, especially as the seasons go on, is gonna retain all of it. (Plus so many reaction channels are beyond forgetful but that’s neither here nor there they’re human)

This is how I understood the scenario when reading it:
1. Soul King was basically comatose because upholding the 3 worlds WAS the goal. And it required such a chance of fate combo of powers to actually kill him. Like, look back on the series. Who else could be Ichigo's mix of powersets? You have to be Shinigami, Hallow, Quincy, Fullbringer, Vizard, Arancaar, and human.
2. IIRC, Ichigo thought he would save the Soul King if he could pull out the blade. Basic first aid aside, he didn't know that Ywach infused the sword with his own reitsu that would overwrite his Quincy blood. Speaking of, good choice to show the Quincy Bluut blood defense during that part.
3. Ichigo has never once thought before he acted. He is all impulse no brain cells. That's why he has to get saved almost as much as Orihime. His battle sense is great, but his impulse is a hair trigger.
the soul king being like that has been hinted for quite a while. part of aizen's motivation (and why he hates kisuke since he is one of the only ones who knows) was distaste of how people blindly worshipped, in his words, just a "thing", who lacked autonomy and who nobody has even seen

Sheera doesn't understand Almighty. Yhwach sees ALL POSSIBLE FUTURES. Then chooses which one he wants to manifest into reality. So there's literally no counterplay whatsoever. Unless you have time manipulation, causality manipulation, fate manipulation, plot manipulation or acasuality then you are fucked.
Also Ichigo just discovered his power and doesn't really understand it. He's also a rash teenager with way too much responsibility. Its not really his fault that he didn't come up with the perfect counter to this over 2,000+ year old grandpa.

according to the story the SK has no limbs, organs or locomotion and is in a state between life and death. When the original four noble families did what they did, they also questioned why the SK did not stop them with its God like abilities. They even go so far as to say if the SK did not wish to be sealed in that Crystal it wouldn't be. In short, its believed the SK is aware and knew everything that would happen but is/was for whatever reason, unwilling to act

This episode had alot of much needed lore and context drops that were missing from the manga. Plus this episode was like 90% original content that was needed especially the fight between ichigo vs yhwach. We really never see ichigo's training results or see him using getsuga jujisho again after he used it against Candace. Plus they did change some lines and added new ones. Along woth giving yoruichi's wire technique an actual name too. Plus we find out the reason why yhwach had ichigo be the one to slice the soul king in half when in the manga there was never a reason explained and it just happened.
The bleach light novels explain the soul king very well and clearly.
As far as I can remember the soul king doesn't have a conscience and cont move, he kinda just sits there holding everything together. Which makes sense cuz if you look back to when aizen was yelling at urahara he says " how dare you subjugate your to that thing."
Soul king is the manifestation of the Omniscience. It is arguable in philosophy that. The Omnipotent can not be all good, and the Omniscience will not do anything. Soul King left the Quincy to rust even though he is omnipotent and Omniscience, he has known everything but decided to act on nothing. Such an existence.
The soul king does not have arms or legs and is in a state of suspended death -- he let it happen, but how is he going to fight in that condition? 😂
Ichigo is the messiah but also quite hot headed and quick to act.

If Ichigo wouldn't have pulled out the sword, then Yhwach would have foreseen he didn't pull it out. Just because he's letting him pull the sword out means nothing, either way Ichigo was going to do what Yhwach needed.

The Soul King is just Alive....but not conscious, the reason for his current state is explained in details in the novels, so I hope they either include some elements of the novels into the TYBW anime or just the adapt the novels in general (and yes, the CFYOW novels are cannon)

Without spoilers Yhwach says in this episode, that the Soul King was sacrificed for the sake of the Soul Society, so he had his limbs cut up and placed in that crystal.
They don’t tell you in the manga so I assume they won’t in the anime, but the soul king isn’t a ruler. The soul king is literally a being that ancient shinigami betrayed and used his power to separate the 3 realms. It goes into details in the light novels. But that’s why you’ll start seeing pieces of the soul king being used or that are like their own entity. I can go into more detail. But it’s also worth noting that the soul king has a better future sight than Yhwatch and its vastly more powerful. So how did he get betrayed and trapped and used? He let them.

Yhwach is a play on the biblical name of God, Yahweh, and the German word Wach for "awake". it could mean "God awake" or "awakened God"
