      @@zaninho24 You just need a soft strat sound. Like a pop tone, maybe a silky tone if that helps you to find it, going to a Chorus. Which she has recently admitted, I do not think you need any delay or reverb.
      It is a classic 80's Chorus tone, which was also popular in the punk English new wave, with groups like The Mission, The Cure, The Sisters Of Mercy etc.
      Maybe something like a Marshall JCM 900 simulator on around 2.2 gain. I think the tone is pop tone but it has to be slightly threatening as the song is about despair. .

      +Georg Egloff Just watched the video of the original live recording (that became the record) and Wendy was playing the F add9. 1st finger - 1st fret E-string, 3rd finger - 3rd fret A-string, 4th finger - 5th fret D-string (!!) 2nd finger - 2nd fret G string. It's an incredible stretch for me as a novice guitar player.

      +Georg Egloff Most people, unless they have large hands will find that chord almost impossible to play. I think she may have been playing a shortscale guitar and that would make it easier but still very tough. I talk about playing the chord this way E1-A3-D5 here at 5:01. The only time you really hear it is in the intro, the rest of the time the A note on G2 sounds the most prominent to my ears so I just played a straight F chord. In my demo at the beginning of the vid for the intro I played 2 guitar parts. One I played the straight F chord and the other I played the Fadd9 (E1-A3-D5). That's how I think they recorded it but who knows for sure. cheers

    • @gee_yo
      @gee_yo 8 років тому +5

      +Ryan Maziarz Unfortunately, they've already pulled your video link, but I have a copy of that video (of the live performance that was used on the record) and Wendy really was hitting that F add 9 chord with the 3rd on top (2nd fret on the G-string). And she played it every time through the verses. Crazy stretch.

    Hey man! THANK-YOU! A million times over... thank-you! You know what you are doing! I have been playing for 40 years now, and I've been teaching guitar for 15 years... but most, if not ALL of the pretenders online are doing something incorrectly! This lesson is brilliant! You patiently explain everything slowly, and provide PLENTY of examples! But what I truly appreciate more than anything else (and what inspired me to subscribe and donate) was the very thorough listing of your gear and your settings! I heard the delay, flanger and reverb, but I could've SWORN you threw in some chorus! I had NO idea you were doing the +8/-8 pitch thing! BRILLIANT! Thank-you for inspiring me! Kudos!

    So I'm 49 and taking up guitar again since my days of having a school band in the 80s. Back then we had no guitar teachers and just the Complete Beatles' book to learn chords. We never had all these amazing UA-cam tutorials. I saw the other comments with some guys maybe around my age-ish coming back to guitar and it's great. That final chord is just killing me as I can't get all the strings to ring out - the B seems to be being muted and also it is one heck of a stretch. But as the other comments say, it's all about practice and maybe one day I'll get close. This is a really excellent video for actually getting the exact sound of the song - cheers.

I just returned to this tutorial after several months and I am proud to say I CAN make that final chord work. It IS a stretch and I can't nail it quite yet, but with a little effort I can play all 5 strings cleanly. Just keep practicing!

    OK, you're the best teacher I've seen at UA-cam hands down, in and out. I've been working your Police song for a month, the La Grange lesson made the painters say I was jamming, ( it was mostly you), I've got one amp left in this for sale house and a chair to sleep on and now you've made me a bit weepy. Excellent. I'm guessing Canada. Peace.

      I find it helps me to plant 2 fingers on the 8th fret (like a A7 chord, A# and F) with your middle and ring finger. then sound the 6th fret A string (D#) then plant your pinky on the 10th fret G string (F) at the same time as making the barre on the 6th fret. Not saying it's right or wrong, but that is what works for me. When I plant my index finger first my fingers tend to slide around. Maybe I just need to practice it more.

    My hand couldn't do the Eb add9 of Wendy's ... but a replacement that I can do is A string 6th fret - D string 5th fret - G string open - B string 6th fret - e string 6th fret... sounds virtually indistinguishable but easier to fret :-) - Sweet video!!

      +Chad Boston You're either joking, not in standard tuning, or tone deaf. I'm not being a jerk, just being for real. There's no replacing that chord.Just keep trying it. Place each finger, one at a time, keep picking each string one at a time, to make sure all notes are ringing clear. Then just hold the chord for a while...again, picking each string, one at a time to keep making sure each note rings clear...strum a bit too. Then relax your hand a few minutes...shake it out, stretch, massage it. Repeat! I remember when I first stumbled across this chord, it was rough. hahaha Prince...hate2CUgo

    I mean after all how many similar chord progressions do we typically hear around music? …..

    My singer has been after me to get this down, but I've seen the videos where guys are over complicating it with all these spidery jazz chords or something. The way you present it is very simple and correct, even showing the harder variations that aren't necessary. That barre chord voicing on the sixth fret is gorgeous and unknown to me until now. I cannot wait to play this next practice and use that chord!!! Thank you very much!!!!!
