- 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport 454 drag race 1965 Pontiac GTO. This is the commentary free version. Here’s the original: • 1970 Chevrolet Chevell...
First car is a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport, and the other a 1965 Pontiac GTO. The 1970 Chevelle has a 454 V8. The '65 GTO has a 389 V8. The 454 in the 1970 Chevelle SS is a LS6 and therefore rated 450 horsepower. The 389 in the Pontiac was rated 360 horsepower since it has a tri-power setup. The 1970 Super Sport Chevelle 454 has a Turbo 400 3-speed automatic transmission, while the 1965 GTO has a 4-speed manual. Weight including driver for the '65 GTO is 3710 pounds. The 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS454 weight is a little heavier at 3848 pounds. They made 20,547 Tri-Power equipped GTOs in 1965, but even few LS6 Chevelles; there were only 4475 LS6 Chevelles/El Caminos produced in 1970. Car Life tested a 1965 GTO with 4.11 gears and a 4-speed manual transmission and it ran 14.5 seconds @ 100 mph and 0-60 in 5.8 seconds...however, they had 2 staff members in the car. The '70 Chevelle LS6 SS454 was tested by Hot Rod magazine in May 1970 and it ran the quarter mile at 13.44 seconds @ 108.17 mph when equipped with 4.10 gears and a 4-speed transmission.

I can here the crickets chirping in here
I can hear the crickets chirping where your commentary should be lol
I’d like to hear the barking spiders chirping instead
Anytime an LS6 is in the race, bet the house on it.
I prefer when they fart :)
As big a fan I am of the older Chevies, I really liked that Pontiac. The GTO was a great looker all in red like that and the redline tires.
and honestly for being a smaller engine in a heavier car it was right there next to a car five years newer with a bigger block.
@@jeremypilot1015 big respect for that Pontiac running neck to neck with the Ls6 Chevelle
I’ll watch your stuff with or without comments, because the coverage and info are always good. BUT, I definitely enjoy your comments and humor mixed in. Thanks for all of these. 👍
The little Pontiac made a good showing of itself.
I was surprised the races were as close as they were.
Love the '65 GTOs, but this was a mismatch. A better matchup for the LS6 would be a '69 RAIV, with similar gearing. Two awsome classics!
A Ram Air 4, is NO MATCH, for the KING of the OLD SCHOOL CHEVYS.
@@josephmcintyre752 Actually on another channel is this very race...a woman driving the Goat...LS6 won 12.44@110mph vs. the RAIV 12.60 @ 114...very close! Would like to have seen a two out of three...not sure what the gearing was in these cars, but it was a great race!
@@gary9426 closer than I expected. Thank you sir
@@gary9426 Yes, great race indeed!
@@gary9426 The GTO was also a 4sp. And the woman driving it missed second gear and had to let off. Someone in the GTO who could row those gears would have whooped up on that chebbie
Car craft in December 1969 drove a 70 Chevelle to a 13.12 @ 107.01. That car was a manual with 3.55 gears.
The GTO did very well.
Considering the power of the LS6 that GTO’s time wasn’t far off the Chevelle’s.
My uncle got a 1965 tri power GTO 4 speed car for his High School graduation gift in 1965. My old man told me that my uncle didnt like the GTO and had some friends of his steal the car. He then collected the insurance $$ and bought a 65 Corvette with a 396 425hp engine which he loved and he was king of the streets in the area for years with that car until he went away to the Army. I asked my uncle years later about the GTO and why he didnt like it? He said all it did was "spin tires and float lifters". lol
@@wreckanchor so you are saying that the 1965 GTO was worth more than the 1965 L78 Vetre which they only made some 618 of?
Even though there was no drama in the race outcome, I really enjoyed seeing these two cars. Now, if the race had been in 1965 and the Chevelle had been a 365hp 327, it would have been a little closer. As it was, the Pontiac showed well.
Wow, that's a fair fight ..a ltd production Chevy with a 5-year tech and 65-cubic inch displacement advantage against a base Goat.🥱 and STILL almost losing the 3 round 😂. Now let's have an equally fair fight-- a 1963 Swiss cheese Catalina with 421SD versus a 1982 Camaro Berlinetta with Chevy's 2.8L V6.
Reading the specs told the story ahead of time. That Chevelle is a MONSTER!
Poor little GTO. Thumb up'
Thanks for sharing this video... two great cars for sure...
This race was a definite no brainer from the start...
Yeah. Large port, canted valve big block chevy, vs small mirror port, inline valve, Pontiac. Cylinder heada make is game over before you even get to the extra cubic inches.
Why not run a 1970 RAVI against the LS6 ? Say a T-37
@@tomcherry7029 '66 Chevelle 396/360HP vs. '66 Coronet 383/335HP. Yeah baby!
@@DeanMk1 they never put top engine against top engine of the same year on this sight.
@@shockwave68 run the big block agaisnt a SD421 or SD 455 and see how well it does.
I hate to see GTOs running against monsters .
Yes. And that chevelle is a monster!
12.82 completely stock? If that’s true, the Chevelle was a beast back then! No slicks, either?
LS6
I love the column shift on the LS6
Great video, thank you! Gotta love '70 Chevelles!
Baddest of the bad.
Would be fun to put both cars on a Rear Wheel Dyno to see how much HP they really made.
I knew the Chevelle will win, though the GTO put a good fight.
The chevelle driver was playing with the goat .... gave him the hole shot, drive past.... backed off
Interesting the differences between the two videos. One benefit of the "voice over" style is that the wind noise/buffeting on the microphone is gone as is the idle blather of people in the background. The downside is you don't really hear that great V8 rumble when the car is idling.....or the epic fart noises when talking about the weight of the car (....with driver....) coming in at 3,847 pounds (insert epic sophomorish fart blast). Because I'm sure that can't possibly be editted in, it is natural fart noises that happens when talking about heavy American Muscle.
Somewhat appreciated the lack of the usual Beavis and Butthead commentary. Love the GTO. Did quite well against what was probably the fastest of the muscle cars overall.
A stock everything 65 GTO will go 13.0 with a stock 1965 421/376 and M21 3.90 slicks and take a few tenths off
The GTO was all on the disadvantage side. Was just out class by the LS6 . I love GTO's but I also own an LS6.
Wow, you do?!😃
Wow, the goat was WAY outclassed in this matchup but what great runs. The chevelle spun like MAD in the 2nd race and STILL ran down the poncho, AND broke into the 12's. Love my poncho's but I'm sure that clowns in here somewhere talking about the Pontiac "CRYBABIES", but who cares...them's the DRAG'S baby! Before someone else comments it : "it takes a Chevy to beat a Chevy" HA, said it first...hahaha
A 421SD Catalina will eat plenty of Chevys , and a 1979 W72 TA even beat the Vette in 1979, as i rcall the Buick GN and GNX where king of the hill in their day , so a lot of cars can take down the Chevys. Oh lets not forget the 73-74 SD455 cars.
Goodday C & Z,
No substitute for cubes.
Both very quick cars & not taking anything away from the Poncho it gave its best shot with a 4 speed.
Don't mind with our without the comment.

Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍 ❤
I have to say even though it lost I am very impressed by the old Pontiac. Don't get me wrong I know Pontiac is no joke I've had a couple. Love both cars. Seeing this reminds me of my buddy's 71 Chevelle it ended up on it's roof. Sad day. Anyways thanks again for the vid I always enjoy them. 👍
I had a 71 SS454. Until someone turned left in front of me. Bent frame. Stupid me, I sold it cheap for the motor and tires mostly, to a friend who also had a 71SS.
First two rounds both cars feathered it out of the hole it seemed like That's raw power !!!
Sick!.. If My late Dad’s 75 Riv w454 was around, and the GTO g-a-v-e it 5 legnths, the ‘Goat’ would still
Shut ‘em down. Forget about the Chevy dragster!
9/2024: Good Day. Both Beautiful Cars in every way. Not far apart performance wise. Love Um Both. Thank You.
Beautiful and flawless
70 LS6 always the king
Which classic do you think sounds the best idling
If truly stock and all had the same mufflers, probably ‘70 Buick 455 Stage 1, ‘69/70 GTO Ram Air IV, ‘69 Camaro z28 (when the valve lash is set near 0). At high RPM it’s hard to beat the sound of a solid lifter hemi or L88 Chevrolet. ‘68 Firebird Ram Air 2 is up there as well.
I'd still rather own the GTO
Great little video. 1970 Chevelle is a bad ass muscle car. Baddest of all in fact.
Too bad my mostly stock 351 Cobra Jet torino beat a 454 Chevelle by allot back in the day.
@@iggyfritz7150 ...but was it LS6? There is a difference.
I missed the commentary. I'll now go the link above.
Lol let’s be fair ,why don’t you put a 307 Chevelle up against the 389 GTO, l would put my 70 GTO Ram Ai V up against that LS6 Chevelle, lol that poor Chevelle wouldn’t stand a chance, hell l wouldn’t even need my Ram Air V GTO , l would beat it with my 70 Ram Air IV Goat…..
Ok a 389 vs a 454 the fact that the GTO was even that close says a lot.
Chevelle is the real deal!
Wonder why they are called.. Trans Am tips when the goat had them first.... Recognize!!
What track is that 🤔🤔🤔😎
How did this lopsided race even happen? 520 lift solid cam, square port head, aluminum intake, Holley carb vs a 408 lift hyd cam, press in stud heads with 1.96/1.66 valves. Maybe it needs to meet this '68 Firebird ua-cam.com/video/qQ6oBEnthg4/v-deo.html
GTO had at least one non stock mod. Heater was removed. Also, though it is probably meaningless, ignition switch not in original location.
Its not meaningless, it is wrong… the ignition switch stick location for a 65 gto, tempest, lemans is on left hand side of dash as shown.
Love that Chevelle but rather have bucket seats and floor shifter. My fav muscle car Chevelle
The first real muscle car versus one on the last. Doesn't seem like we gained all that much performance in 5 years.
I enjoy the comments but all in all its good either way
The 454 has 100 more horsepower than the goat 💯💯💯
that chevelle is gorgeous!
I would donate a kidney for either one of these cars
Saw THAT coming...
Not a very good matchup. No way a 389 GTO can hang with an LS6 454 Chevelle.
And there’s no way that you understand the rules of pure stock. FYI if you took five minutes to watch the original video you would see that the GTO actually qualified FASTER than the Chevelle.
Nothing could
@@therealhonestabe7839 That means nothing. You can sandbag a faster car and get the first round matchup you're looking for. There was no way that GTO was gonna win.
@@danjarrell5040 ; Of course the GTO could win. The Chevy could've red lighted.
If that GTO had some good sized chetter racing slicks in the back that rac would have ended much different.
I must not be very smart. Tperiod the Chevelle won the 1st place and the 2nd race. No. Now I understand having another race but at the end of the video they said that there should several one best of 3. It had already done that after the 2nd race right right?
Looking at the mph numbers, either car could have won. The GTO defintely missed second gear on the first run or it would have won.....
Where is your commentary? Miss it.
Does nobody read the video description box? maybe you should try that.

@@kollerjims447 Sorry Man. Long day.
I have to wonder how close to stock they actually are. That 12.83 from the SS is a little questionable.
Definitely a very quick time. I too, was surprised
The car made 550 hp in reality.. on slicks it'll run faster.
It's an LS6.
The legendary LS6.
Nice GTO but it would be hard for it to beat an LS 6 down the track.
A beast !!! Chevelle ss
Had a SS when that BS cam spring and button took a dump.
That 454 will smoke the goat 💯💯💯
I gotta say... I Definitely prefer the low/no commentary videos. I'm just here for the Bad-Ass Cars. Not the Poor-Ass "humor"!!!
13.25 @ 94.64? Doesn't add up!
Traction ,the chevelle had none it spun through 1st and second gear in round three .
The driver let off before the finish line. There is a break out rule and the qualifying times were kind of slow due to the poor traction on Friday. The traction was better on Saturday and the Chevelle was running quicker so did not want to go more than 3 tenths faster than Friday's qualifying time
@@jeffreythomas9527 ... thank you. In fact, the chevelle backed out of it each race
The Pontiac still did well... and in my opinion is a better car
I knew the chevelle was going to smoke the goat
Agreed.
What a mismatch 💯💯💯💯
Didn't we see this one last week...looks to be the same one.
Yes, he said he would be posting some of the same races with and without commentary. This is the one without.

My first car was a 1968 Pontiac Catalina 4 door with the 389 4 barrel automatic. It couldn't peel out in the snow.
The gto took off on the red and the chevelle still beat him 😂
In a 8th mile the first round the gto got it!

With the comments are better…just sayin’
Absolutely No comparison !! .....With Chevelle LS6 stock Solid lifter 454 & aluminum Rectangular port cylinder heads the "Contest" is Over & done Before the green lite comes on !! ...... Other than the rare few 1962 Super Duty & "Unattainium" Ram Air 5, Pontiac just Never offered any real good cylinder Heads adequate for their 389--455 cu in "Juice" cammed Low rpm engines.....By 1961, Chevy's "Real Fine" Solid lifter, hi- comp 409 blew Anything available from Pontiac & never looked back.....A real Shame the '62 421 Super Duty was the last "Real" Pontiac performance engine.....
Not a fair race. Chevelle is at least 500hp.
Oh look...another Pontiac crybaby. Shut up crybaby.
True, but the old Goat was right on him and literally almost won the 3rd round.
Used to love your commentary! That is what set you apart from other channels and you were hilarious to listen to. I wish you the best but i can get this anywhere. Good luck and God bless but im unsubscribing.
If you took two seconds to look at the previous videos you would see he already made a commentary version that was released just over one week ago. What a great fan you are.
Bruce - he's experimenting with voice over (commentary) and non voice over. Trying to satisfy both factions of his fan base. You can watch this, with all its flatulence glory, on an earlier video released last week.
Bruce just shut up and leave. If you’re too stupid to figure out there is a version already with commentary then you shouldn’t be on this channel. You are no longer welcome.
No real surprises in this.
Not a fair race
Without commentary these are boring
Looks like the GTO was having traction issues.
Hard core Pontiac fans are the sorest of losers. Geez Louise. Who cares how or why anyone lost. No need for the plethora of excuses. Fun fact. The fastest Pontiacs to roll off an assembly line didn't even have Pontiac engines( turbo trans am that had the Buick 3.8, the LS equipped Trans Am/ WS6's, GTO's, and G8's were all faster)
what a mismatch 65 cu. under dog,
And the Chevelle wins all 3 rounds - well duh... !
It really doesn't matter who wins or loses both of them are winners in my eyes
