    Theoretically you could cut light but separating light into two beams is defiantly possible

    If you're capable of separating photons, a particle so small that we say they don't have mass because it's just so negligible, then you've got some explaining to do.

      Well, the closest thing we have is using a blade or something in order to stop photons to travel in that direction. Though that's more of a shadow than cutting light, but eh.

    Light is light, Idk if there is a way to specifically CUT light, but if you wanna separate to points of light all you have to do is block it, which is technically temporarily cutting light's path, and for Brush powers, a quick block may be all it need to haul them , at least for one stroke

      Couldn't you just place a solid object between them? I mean a shadow is formed when light is cut off.

    Light is a wave particle and energy at the same time. As far as I've heard stopping a photon destroys it. And cutting it seems pretty much impossible because it is energy. Sorry these are the only answers I can come up with.

    Light is a ray of every color in the color wheel, when it comes accross a wall that reflects light, it can devide it into seperate colors based on the majority, like a diamond lusters yellow and gred and blue, so yea I guess it is possible to cut light.

    I know he asked about cutting light. But *splitting* and *cutting* are two distinctly different things. To *cut* something means to slice or sever the bonds holding it together. To *split* something means to divide part of it in two, without completely separating it (like splitting a hair or rope down the middle). In other words, you can't *slice* light, but you could theoretically force it to *divide* into two smaller beams with a very fine blade (reflecting the beam into 2 different paths).

      Well technically intercepting a ray of light might be interpreted as "cutting" it. Say you put your hand in the way of a laser beam. There is a very brief moment in which there a photons on either side of your hand, as in you're "cutting" the photon stream.

    Well if you have a piece of glass that takes an individual ray of light and produces two separate rays of light, it's taking a ray of light and cutting it in half. There's more then one way to cut something in half.

  • @SheezyBites
    @SheezyBites 12 років тому

    Yes, you can cut a ray of light in half as the 'ray' is simply light in it's wave form. Cutting light itself in half is a lot more of an interesting question due to wave particle duality, but a ray can be done with any object and a source producing light with an energy signature that matches an electron gap in the object (ie. the object is opaque to that ray of light). You can also argue that dual slit experiments 'cut the light in half', but only argue, as that's the fun of physics.

  • @randomnpc445
    @randomnpc445 12 років тому

    Black absorbs light, but if you were to put a black object in the pathway of a beam of light it would just block the light, not cut it in half.
    A black hole is basically a big ball of gravity that pulls everything toward it's center, including light. That's why the only way to "cut" light, would be to find a way to control a black hole to "face" one direction and only bend the light in one spot, the light would continue, but there would be a break.

    Breaking a singular beam of light (like a laser) is equivalent to merely absorbing it. However, the celestial brush seems to be creating a path of light emitters, rather than an actual beam. That being said, it isn't difficult to break a chain of emitters and cause a chain reaction that shuts them all down.

    If x = 2, the denominator is 0. Dividing by 0 is impossible. Therefore, there is no value for y at x = 2. I graphed the equation, and there was an asymptote at x = 2 (an asymptote is a line a graph approaches, but never touches).

    If you want to move physical objects move faster than the speed of light compared to its surroundings, you would have to stretch space in front of it with gravity so while its moving slower than the speed of light in the space right next to it, when you return space to normal, it went further than light could have in the same amount of time normally.

  • @AlmogTC
    @AlmogTC 12 років тому

    considering these options cutting light in half is possible (hear me out) if you take a pitch black room with no dust or water (moisture) in the air and you use a directed light beam to go straight from one side to the other side of the room, hitting a mirror which sends it back, and then seperate the room into three parts seperated by glass (example) I 1 I 2 I 3 I . when 1 and 3 are full of water and there is none in 2 then you can make an illusion of cutting light but not really.

    You don't need to destroy something to cut it. You just need to break the bonds that hold it together. When you cut a piece of paper with scissors, you're just severing the molecular bonds holding one part of the paper from another part of the paper. All you need to do to cut a beam of light is to put a mirror in it. This would cause the light that hits the mirror to go on a different path than the light that was going by before you moved the mirror, thereby 'cutting' the beam of light.

  • @Niaeruzu
    @Niaeruzu 12 років тому

    I don't think that's possible with light, since all wavelenghts in it are in roughly the same space. If you want to 'stop' a certain part of the light, you'll need a filter, but that doesn't reflect, only absorb. You'll just take whatever the filter absorbed out of the equation entirely.
    Add to that the fact that we're talking about cutting light like a string, which is doubly impossible since one photon has no connection to the next.

    It's believed that, if a photon of light is presented with two possible pathways, it will actually split into two and go through each, then become one again and move on, unless a living creature manages to watch it, in which case it instantly becomes one again. Why this occurs is unknown.

    Can you cut a ray of light in half?
    A "ray of light" is really just a bunch of photons, travelling the same way. "Cutting it in half" would simply require removing some of the photons, as to not have one body of photons, but two. If you removed the middle photons from a cylindrical body of photons, you would have 2 cylindrical bodies of photons. To remove the photons, use anything that reflects light at all.

  • @robincb
    @robincb 11 років тому

    not criticising, but i just wanted to add to your explanation that as get closer to the speed of light the reason you keep requiring more and more energy to speed up is that your mass closes in on infinity the closer you get, and because moving a larger mass at the same speed costs more energy equivalent to the amount of mass gained

    And the only thing a black hole does to a ray of light is bend it, and you can't make a sphere "face" a direction (black hole is sphere).

    Light is a stream of particles/waves, so none of this works out. Your can't "cut" a pattern of moving particles, but you can block the particles/waves or bend space-time enough so that the photons orbit a point, effectively making them unable to go anywhere.

    Well, those methods involve some clever *cheating*. The idea of a star ship equipped with a "warp drive", for example, involves compressing space-time in front of you so that you cover a larger distance when traveling at a given speed (but within your OWN frame of reference, you would still be traveling slower than light). You gain mass as you approach light speed, and as Okami Amaterasu so kindly added, you would need infinite energy to reach the speed of light. Thanks for feedback, though :)

  • @okamiamaterasu1873
    @okamiamaterasu1873 12 років тому

    Hitting the speed of light with regular mass is impossible since the faster you go, not only will you require exponentially more energy, but time will also slow exponentially. Hitting the speed of light using regular matter or energy requires exactly infinity energy and will cause time to stop, both values being asymptotic and nonexistant. It's like finding the value of 2 in equation 2x+4/x-2, it just cannot be done.

    I am no scientist but (maybe I can be wrong) cutting a ray of light is simple you just need to put something in the middle of it like a black sheet for example. What will happen is that at the exact moment you put that sheet the ray will be cut in half for a really tiny portion of time considering that the speed of light is 300 000km/s you will never see it but it will happen.

    (I didn't have enough room to explain in the prior post)
    When we hear the term "magic", of course we always think of the kind of magic seen in fairy tales and certain kinds of anime. But it isn't necessarily restricted to that definition. Magic can be any type of phenomenon that defies the established laws of physics, or merely can't be explained by them. A wise man, for example, once said that any highly advanced technology can seem like magic (*cough* YAMI *cough* *cough*). That works for me.

    You can cut a ray of light simply by putting any solid object in it. like if you put your hand in a laser beam. Your hand seperates the ray into 2 rays, we just arent abke to see it due to how fast light travels. But the way that the enemies do it is impossible. The guidance power isnt one ray of light. Its multiple rays of light arranged in the way you drew the line and all of them are pointing upward. They "cut" probably a few rays then all of them disappear and thats not how it works.

    That is correct. But wrong too, Black holes don't distort and absorb. They rip molecule by molecule, and then transfer. No one actually knows if it is absorb or if it sent to another dimension which is one of those really cool interesting parts of science.

    Can you cut wind in half? Can you cut water in half? Water, light, and wind work very similarily when going to objects and stuff.
