  • This presentation explains Cummins' 1979 distinction between Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP). It defines and gives examples of classroom activities for each concept. At the end of the presentation, you can take a game that quizzes your mastery of the concepts. (Mary Acevedo, TESOL, authored this 15-minute Power Point lecture that has been converted to video.)

Thank you for this! However, I feel that you want the listeners to have a good night sleep. :)

Hey, college students never get enough sleep, right?! C'mon, it's only 15 minutes or so; you can do it!!

Fantastic, Gabriele! I'm glad I could help, and I'm glad you are trying so hard to understand this -- it will make you a better teacher!

Thank you very much for this. I'm doing some action research using some KS4 English students in this area and video provided an interesting base comparison.

Who is the author of this presentation? Where all the information comes from? (especially the examples of bics and calp)
I'd like to include some of the information in a project for my Master's degree. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, Maria, I am so sorry for the lateness of my reply.
I am the one who put the Power Point together and published it. The APA information for a bibliography/references section of a research paper would be:
Acevedo, M. (2013). James Cummins: BICS and CALP. Retrieved on [insert date] from ua-cam.com/video/cjFw9aC8jnY/v-deo.html
I learned the information to present from a variety of sources, the most important source being Dr. Cummins himself. I never had him as a teacher, but I have learned from his website, referenced in my presentation at 16:01. There are also many lectures by him and interviews with him that you can find here on UA-cam, where you can watch and listen to him yourself.
The examples given in my recorded Power Point at approximately 7:00 are common knowledge and presented in different ways/wordings in a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate textbooks that deal with Second Language Acquisition.
The table I present at approximately 9:00 comes from Cummins' own description (go to his website) but I also saw it in print in a textbook called "Not for ESOL Teachers. What Every Classroom Teacher Needs to Know about the Linguistically, Culturally, and Ethnically Diverse Student" by Eileen N. Whelan-Ariza (published by Pearson).
I created the game referenced at 13:00 to help my own students study and memorize the activities/quadrants/types of language for exams given in my classes.
Hope this is not too late!

HI. I would love to use a portion of this video for a new school psychologist training induction presentation I am co-collaborating on with Intermediate Unit 13. It is a free presentation.

o wow, Nanda, I am honored! I am curious to know which portion you would like to use. When is the presentation, and where is IU13 located? Is this an in-service training for continuing education credits? I would like to have access to the presentation, too, or have the option to link back to it. Thanks!
