How Oysters Are Farmed In Scotland’s Lochs | Regional Eats

- Local landowner Johnny Noble and marine biologist Andy Lane started the Loch Fyne Oyster Farm in 1978. Since then, they've grown it into a global business. They export internationally to Barbados, South Africa, and Hong Kong, as well as stocking in prestigious London retailers. But what makes these oysters so special? Loch Fyne farms Pacific oysters, which can be found at various locations on the Scottish coast. These oysters are harvested all around the world, including France, Australia, and New Zealand. Pacific oysters constitute 80% of the global oyster trade and were introduced to the UK in 1964 to replace low stocks of the British native oysters. The native variety can be more expensive and rare, but also riskier to consume.
The Scottish lochs have unparalleled water quality. And this loch, in particular, is of class A purity at least six months of the year.Safety here is paramount. Loch Fyne monitors the water constantly for toxins, as do the local authorities. To eliminate viruses, each oyster undergoes a series of checks, starting the moment it arrives from the hatchery.

It's weird seeing your in laws home on a random video on UA-cam. My husband grew up in spitting distance from that Loch. The garden centre next door is my favourite place to visit!
I usually hate oysters but Loch Fyne ones have a really subtle flavour and are quite nice to eat.
The environment the oysters are farmed looks far healthier and serene than my home...
Looks a lot like the sounds and canals we have here in the Pacific Northwest. I heard a farm is growing British flat oysters out here now which is cool.
I've had oysyers from almost everywhere and I'd say these are the best. Had ones in northern Ireland as well and they were excellent. But the lich does something special to them
What did the oyster tell the other oyster?
You never opened up for me.
This brightened my day hahahahaha
LMAOOOO
I dont get it
Nice one Lmao
My kind of molluscs, opening up literally kills em
That means alot of things
*lenny
My mouth is watering the whole video
“Do they taste as good as they look?” I bloody hope not.
Oh wow, 45 minutes in and there is still only 9 comments. This is a rare sight to see for a channel this big.
Similar to south australian oysters, very pristine waters and very minimal pollution. Tastes the best.
@Teddles Peddles there is no radioactive material on our shores, otherwise scientists would have protested. And south australia is very far from Japan so i don't know what you're smoking. Plus the radioactive water from Fukushima was contained and filtered.
Wow!! That was very interesting to know. He takes what he does very seriously and that's what makes the oyster good and safe to eat.
Amazing! Another item to add in on my trip to the homeland !
Did you hear about the Oyster that went to the local Disco ?...He pulled a Mussel
Personal packed fresh oysters. I can't imagine how expensive and delicious those are lol
Scotland is a lovely place to be I went up for a holiday 2 weeks ago it was amazing and all the people who live there and really nice welcoming people if ever met

FREEEEDOOOOOOM
I see you on all the videos I watch wtf
Kinda like what happened with chili peppers and India
Very interesting . . . . thank you! 😎👍✔😎👍✔
It's never too early in the day to eat oysters.
Nothing finer than a great oyster! I live on the coast of Oregon, US and I have tasted many Scottish oysters while visiting there and in a few ways they are better than local oysters. I am sure its the water temp and the condition of the water that makes them better.
I'll eat them anyway you serve them. I love Oyster soup with Brie cheese.
I saw the thumbnail and my eyes got huge, my mouth watering! Great, now it's 10:42 and I'm craving oysters. 🤦🏾♀️ Thanks a lot UA-cam!

I’ll be going to an oyster fest this weekend out here in Gulf Shores Alabama. Very excited!

The Loch Fyne restaurant serves a great salmon and cream cheese sandwich too!

Good job 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I don't know how anyone develops a taste for oysters, but if I enjoyed them, I'd certainly want oysters from this particular place. How pristine and untouched by human selfishness!
I’d love to try Scottish oysters best I’ve had were from the gulf coast primarily in Louisiana and southern Mississippi.
So poop then?
Who’s you’re best company a railroad bum with a tuna can top hot

They look great
Damn. Dudes got the shakes like i get.
In the middle of service as a noob cook, Chef Sunny throws me an oyster and I hear "try it". I'm not a seafood guy. But I got it down right out of the shell. He threw a plate of oysters in my general direction. Then yelled I said fry it. Yeah I'm not much of an oyster guy at this point.
Hi there, @foodinsider could you please explain and perhaps substantiate what you said about native oysters being more risky to consume? Thank you
@Thi-Antra Chirasarn thanks for the comment, I'm actually calling them out because thats a massive bit of misinformation so I don't need to google it :) I know it's wrong, more just trying to clean up false new about oysters, they get a bad enough rap as it is for issues like food poisoning - totally out of proportion with reality. I work with oysters www.theoysterlady.co.uk
A bit scared now, Used to just pick them up out of the water and eat them, Waded in barefoot and when I felt one just picked it up. Hope I didn’t get any viruses!
@@morbalis5047 Im sure you'd know by now! 👍🦪😉
Great now I’m hungry 🤤
Alright I think I’m moving to Scotland I love oysters 🦪
Nice.
HMMM. Me want. Especially with the tangy sauce. And I agree fresh is way better than cooked.
that man's accent match the question : "what is heavier, a kilogramme of steel, or a kilogramme of feathers ?"
That’s right, a kilogram of Steel, because steel is heavier than feathers!
Brod such logic 😨
I had to chance to eat one in Croatia but I couldn't do it 😩
But where is the horseradish a bit of that and a small squeeze of lemon is so good on a fresh oyster
How can i order these oysters in the usa?
حلووو كثير اتمنى اتذؤق هذي الااكله طيبه والا لا ..😛😜😝
He says he does not want to put Tobasco sauce because he does not want to overpower the taste of the oyster, yet he is eating one that loaded with anchovy, cheddar cheese, and dumps a load of lemon. If you can't handle the spice just say so.
It to not over power natural flavors
Id crack open a cheesy joke, but that would be shellfish.
Clean waters nice oysters thats it
He sounds like kiran Tierney

I love raw oysters but still recovering from that video. Lol
What do oysters taste like
Sea water mostly, it’s the only way I can explain their flavour.

Who on earth decided that a shell full of SNOT looked rather tasty???🙄
I was just thinking that! Lol my mom says all they are is a bladder lol and how did they know you can eat them raw? I didn't even know you could do that

I never eat oysters with a fork, It's always down the hatch.
I'm confused. Are Scottish lochs salt water? Aren't oysters salt water dwellers?
What am I missing?
Lochs can be fresh or saltwater
Oysters are indeed salt water dwellers, but Loch Fyne has a fairly narrow opening to the sea, and a lot of freshwater input from rivers etc.
So whilst it is a saltwater loch, it has a lower salinity than the open sea
Loch is the Scottish name for both Lakes and Fjords.
Thanks to both responders. I'm now more educated, and hungry.
