I used to live a couple blocks away from there so I have so many good memories from the YMCA. Playing football/soccer, staying there at the monthly parents night out, eating snacks from the vending machine, going to the pool, going to the summer camp... It really was a bigger part of my life than I realized.
Every year at my neighborhood block party as a kid, they played this song. Every time after the city cleanup, at the town hall they played this song. Every time my elementary school threw a party or event for any reason, inevitably someone would play this song. And every time, we'd dance. I'd let go of my social fears and just do the YMCA, singing the lyrics along everyone else in the crowd. Every year at my neighborhood block party as a kid, they played this song. Every time after the city cleanup, at the town hall they played this song. Every time my elementary school threw a party or event for any reason, inevitably someone would play this song.
And every time, we'd dance. I'd let go of my social fears and just do the YMCA, singing the lyrics along everyone else in the crowd. It was one of the only songs anyone could get me, of all people, to dance to (and be happy about it). I miss getting lost in the music like that. I miss those good days. I miss my childhood.
