Comparing Marner to centres feels weird, because you will prioritize a centre over a winger. Comparing him to Pastrnak and Rantenen makes sense, whereas Barzal and Eichel play different positions and I don't think you can definitively say one over another
Before I went to this, I thought to myself that I'll probably pick Marner most of the time comparing to other wingers. But both Pastrnak and Rants gave me pause and I decided against Marner on both times.

People who take Marner over Eichel don’t watch Eichel play. Eichel had 201 pts in his last 203 games the past three years on the lowest scoring teams that were awful. Two sprained ankles, always out there against the best dmen. Oh and was the only player to finish in the top 25 without another player to get over 63 Pts. He does so much, I say if Eichel was in Toronto he’d be on a toonie by now. Lol
There seems to be this big debate amongst leaf fans on whether or not Marner is more valuable than Matthews and if he’s worth Matthews money. Hearing these guys chat and compare marner to these other players is interesting. If they were comparing Austin Matthews to these other guys and who they would take for eight years, I wonder who they would pick then 🤔 I have a feeling I know who and there likely wouldn’t be hesitation. And I just feel that most experts and GM’s would probably feel the same way. Marner is unbelievable and worth a lot of money, but I think him and his camp are playing hardball for more than they deserve, he’s just not worth Matthews money.

Matthews is a great player. But he’s not a player you build your team around he’s an amazing compliment player. Similar to a malkin. Matthews won’t be in Toronto for more then 3 more years. He’s not a guy that wants to lead a team or deal with the media like he has to in Toronto. Marner is the guy that would stay for his whole career.

Leafs (Dubas) created a huge problem by overpaying Nylander. Now they all feel that is how it works.
And Reilly is probably the most important given that D is hardest to find/replace.
Nylander is not overpaid. He signed for market value. And when he scores 75 points next year no one will say a PEEP. Signing Tavares was what changed everything for the leafs. Not to say it was a bad signing, but it really put a wrench in the 5 year plan the leafs had.

I really don't know why people say Dubas overpaid and caved in got Nylander. Remember his comparables are in the $6-7 range while Nylander camp was seeking Drasaitl money (8.5 per season).
Ultimately Nylander signed much closer to his comparables and what the Leafs were initially offering than what he was asking for.

Here's how another team creates a dilemma for Leaf management: offer him what Mathews got - 5 years @ 11.6. He signs the offer sheet and what do Leafs do? It's more than they want to pay, and worse, if they match, Marner and Mathews become UFAs at exactly the same time.
Marner has averaged 23 goals a season and has 5 goals in 20 playoff games.
He has ONE big season of assists under his belt. Hasn’t won 1 playoff round. I just don’t get the obsession. He’s a great player, not a superstar. He’s played 3 full seasons and the team hasn’t went anywhere. He’s been decent in the playoffs, but not a player that puts a team on his back and carries them.

Not his fault his team can't get past the first round, you shouldn't put that on Marner it's a team sport. Not one player can carry his team to a championship. He's an elite player and will be for year's to come. As a Leafs fan he has definitely carried the offence through stretches like the 18 season when Matthews got hurt. He was our best forward in the 2018 playoffs. He was arguably the leafs best player this season. And he deserves way more than 7 million especially when you see lesser players like Hayes and Skinner get a big payday. He deserves 8-9.5 mill overral.

Matthews bc position matters and elite goal scoring is more rare/more valuable, and Matthews is scoring at the 5th best rate in the history of the nhl throughout a players first 3 seasons (era adjusted). Plus bc throughout their first 3 seasons he lead the team in points per 60 in all of them.
Matthews is also injury prone.... Marner is like a pinball he bounces off of everywhere.... if these guys don't win a cup with this current roster in the next 5 years.... then they never will again. That Ballard ruined it all for this franchise. MLse is already rich anyway

Its not that simple. Marner has Tavares on his line. That accounts for a decent amount of his huge points gain this year. Matthews was injured. Matthews puts up more goals.
Matthew's has a .97 ppg and marner is .93. Matthew's puts up more points and is a top line center. Marner is a winger and should not be the highest paid one in the league.

There are only a handful of guys I would take over Marner: McDavid, Crosby, Ovechkin, Gaudreau, Kucherov, Stamkos, Tavares, Matthews. That still leaves him in the Top 10. That's worth at least 10 million dollars - minimum!

Every GM in the NHL would take Matthews over Marner if given the choice. Matthews is leading the league in goals per game played since he entered it, and is a legit first line centre, playing on the second line and still out pointing everyone.

Look at Kevin Hayes, an average hockey player who signed a 7 million dollar per year contract. William nylander makes the same money and he's a much better player. Back in the 1970s and I am dating myself because I am 60 years old. You never knew the salaries of most players. I thought it was so much better that they negotiated based on their own merits rather than based on somebody else's merits.
