My first time watching Places in the Heart (1984). This is a movie that knew the story it wanted to tell. Real characters in real situations steeped in 1930s culture. A heartwarming drama with just a touch of suspense sprinkled in for good measure. They also picked cotton. I hope you enjoyed my Places in the Heart movie reaction & commentary

Honestly, a beautiful movie! Please share your thoughts on this one down below.
And what a great ending! A lot of literal people didn't like it, but it was very thought-provoking.
5th generation Navarro county Texas just south of the filming locations..
One of the most accurate movies except the tornado scene....
The Struggle,,, Celebrating,,, and victories in life....👍
My family had a lien on the farm during the Depression and Dust Bowl days?? And yes !!!!!!!
A Banker is the Devil 😈👹 himself!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great reaction 🤠✌️♥️🍻
I haven't seen this movie in probably 20 or so years. I forgot how much I love it. Thanks for viewiing something that most reactions overlook.
Great to see movies that aren't block busters get the appreciation they deserve.
Definitely a lot of great films out there!
The scene when Mr Will calls out the hooded Klansmen by name is so powerful. It's a bit like the climax to "Witness" in way that I won't spoil for you, in case you ever watch it.
This movie really goes straight to your heart. I'm glad Sally Fields got her academy award for this. You might check out her first Oscar role, in "Norma Rae".
I think this was the first time many of us were introduced to Danny Glover and John Malkovich, too. Ed Harris as a heel, not his usual character.
Under rated movie, thanks for reacting to it. There needs to be more UA-camrs that watch these type of quality films and not just the box office hits.
Love this movie. Sally Field deserved her best actress Oscar. Btw, Ed Harris (Wayne), and Amy Madigan (Viola) were married in real life during the filming of this movie. They’ve been together ever since - almost 40 years.
That’s so cool!
Love Ed! One of my favourite actors! 😁
"But I wanna say thank you to you. I haven't had an orthodox career. And I've wanted more than anything to have your respect. The first time I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it. And I can't deny the fact that you like me. Right now. You LIKE me. " - March 25th, 1985.
The end summed up the title….gone but not forgotten. Places in the heart!
The final scene in the church makes me cry everytime.
I enjoyed this one a lot here.... this is my tenth time watching this movie and I appreciate your reactions and comments about this movie . The character Mr. Will is played by one of my favorite actors John Malkovich which he has been in "Dangerous Liaisons"~ 1988 which is another period piece and "Of Mice and Men"~ 1992 . I am looking forward to seeing more of your reactions and commentary for other movies with Sally Fields, Danny Glover , Ed Harris , and John Malkovich . This really was really such a heartfelt and genuine reaction.... Thank you Chris
I love John Malkovich! But “Being John Malkovich” is just plain strange, and I loved every bit of it!
This is one of my favorite movies and I watch it at least once every summer. All the actors did real well but Sally Field is just awesome.
Thank-you for reacting to movies like this that have so much heart.
You're spot on again, Chris, in your thoughtful reaction to this touching film. That's why we all tune in.
A lot of talent in that cast. For more Amy Madigan, try Walter Hill’s Streets of Fire (1984) with a young Willem Dafoe in a breakout role.
Hey Chris. I know I've seen this movie...probably when it first came out. I didn't remember it, but your edit brought it all back to me. Thank you. You've got a gift, young man. Keep on going and growing.
Thanks so much, Jim!
Sally Field is so versatile. At home in both heavy drama and the light comedy where she got her start, her determination to shake off her fame as "The Flying Nun" fueled her ambition for many years. She has many amazing performances to her credit including this one which won her her second Oscar.
Other of her films that are worth seeking out and show her range include "Norma Rae" for which she won her first Oscar, "Lincoln" as Mary Todd Lincoln and scored her third nomination this time in Supporting Actress, "Steel Magnolias" with a great cast of legendary actresses, "Heroes" with Henry Winkler and a young Harrison Ford and on the lighter side "Soapdish".
Sally's definitely the one who anchors and carries the film but she's surrounded by award caliber costars and the film tells an interesting at times disturbing story.
The atmosphere of the time period in this film is extraordinary almost as if the writer/director Robert Benton was a witness to it. All the characters are so welk-defibed and every shot is perfect and the acting is so pure.
Absolutely. I felt instantly transported to the time period. Really well done.
This movie is much beloved by me. It’s not flashy or overly complicated but the main characters give some powerful performances. I have long been a fan of Sally Field and I love her understated performance here.
Absolutely driven by the incredible performances.
This is one of my favorite films starring Sally Field. Love the story line and the wonderful acting from the entire cast. Field's character reminds me of some of my aunts. We are from the Mid-West rather than Texas, but were farmers who depended on their crops to be able to make it. Her strength of will and determination are awe-inspiring. Thank you for reacting to this great movie!
I was surprised to see this pop up as a reaction from you but I was glad to see it and I knew you'd enjoy this one. All the performances from top to bottom, even the kids, were top notch. Mose left town at the end for his own safety, but he was included at the very end in the church because he was part of the family and always would be, even if he'd left, much like Royce and Wylie's inclusion. That's the way I saw it, anyway. Such a touching film.
I knew Sally would get the Oscar for this! Danny Glover, if he wasn’t nominated for this, he SURELY needed to be nominated for “The Color Purple”… and he wasn’t. They said he played his part too well and brought up a lot of hate for his character. Guess what. That’s exactly what you’re supposed to do as an actor!! Especially playing Mister!
On a different subject, there are people that have such good hearts and souls that you can’t believe in a million years that someone would do something that would hurt that person. I watch and listen to you and you are one of those good people. If you are/get/was in a relationship and they broke your heart, that person would have to live with the guilt for the rest of their lives, remembering what they threw away. I am not as good a person as you, so when it happened to me… well, it was 1991. They say you can forgive someone, which I do, but you can never forget. If someone did that to you, it would break my heart. Those are some of the “Places in my Heart”… also how much I hate pickin’ cotton and workin’ in the fields. It hurts! There’s a place in my heart for that, too! Great reaction and I’m so glad you did it.
BTW-It was filmed in Waxahachie, Texas, just an hour away from Dallas. So was “Trip to Bountiful”. Bountiful is like where I grew up. Visit there, yes. Live there, NO! 🤣
Frank's whole attitude towards his punishment. It kills me. I love it so much. I love your reaction. I hope my kids are like him.
She won her second best female actor Oscar for this role.
This is one of my favorite movies. I seriously don’t think I’ve clicked on a video as quickly as it clicked on this one! I think you’re the first person I’ve seen react to this movie and I really enjoyed your reaction.
If you’re interested in more Sally Field movies, I would like to suggest “Murphy’s Romance” and “Steel Magnolias”.
Absence of Malice was a good one of hers as well!
Thank you for choosing this movie. It brought back memories of watching it with my Mom & how much we loved it. Places In The Heart became one of our all time favorites.♡ (that and the film, A Trip To Bountiful. The wonderful Geraldine Page starred in it)
The ending sort of confused me at the time ~ Mom said it was showing all of the people that had a 'place in her (Sally Fields character) heart.' I thought that was one of the most heartwarming endings to a film.♡
Thank you for bringing a lovely memory of my Mom today. ♡
yes, the corrupt banker is played by Lane Smith. noted for playing smarmy, unscrupulous characters over his career. he's excellent in My Cousin Vinny
"Uh, um, she's acceptable."
I thought to a degree he seemed like an honest banker just doing his job. But because of Sally Field’s stubbornness, he dumps his blind brother in law on her. It helps to a degree, but she still needs to get the cotton crop in on time
great film.. thanks for giving the classics some love.. some other older gems .. Tender Mercies with Robert Duvall, The Sand Pebbles with Steve McQueen, Little Big Man with Dustin Hoffman, Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman, and Paper Moon with Ryan O’niel and his real-life daughter Tatum (she won Academy Award in this role).. there are some phenomenal performances and writing in these gems.. hope you enjoy them in time..
I saw this movie a bunch back in the day. It was on HBO every other day in the summer of 80-something. All actors were great, but Sally Field was amazing. Thanks for reminding me this movie exists!.
Those of us raised in the Dallas/Fort Worth area should recognize the deputy who arrests Mose as Mr. Peppermint. His name was Jerry Haynes. He was on this kid's program on the ABC affiliate.
If you haven’t seen it I recommend the original Steel Magnolias with Sally Field. Her acting is top notch and will move you so much. Another underrated movie of hers is Eye For An Eye.
My mom's uncle who was the same age as her told me a story at one of Mom's birthday parties from about 1938. His girlfriend's mom bought a car and wanted to go from Houston to Oklahoma to visit relatives, but was not ready to drive the car herself so she ask my uncle to drive it. Just across the Texas/Oklahoma border something happened with the car and they had to stop in a small town. When they were waiting for the car to be fixed he was sitting on the wooden sidewalk and some men was playing dominoes or something when a man on a horse came through dragging a black man behind him. My mom's uncle started to get up and the other men told him not to because it could happen to him. This exact thing happen with James Byrd, a Black man, in east Texas in 1998 being dragged to death behind a car.
I cry every time at the ending
I know. It’s like a dream and a symbol of everybody coming together and working together, plus forgiveness. The Lone Star Band, the woman killed in her car, Moze, well, I won’t give it away.
The deputy that brought Danny Glover back to her was a local children's celebrity in DFW. He was known as Mr. Peppermint on his local program out of Dallas before he was in this movie.
Sally Field is remarkable I completely 100% agree with you
I just watched this movie. The ending you have to rewatch to notice that Moses isn’t at the church until he took communion as well as Mr. Spalding and the young boy that shot him.
Watching this as a kid taught me to get out of cars during a tornado. Later when tornado shows started being on tv all the time, I was like NO GET OUT THE CAR. 😂
ETA: It taught me about lynching too. Nashville recently put up a historic marker at a lynching site, and someone already stole it. The worst part is they didn't commemorate the plaque, inform the media, or announce it because they knew what would happen, but... it happened anyway. It's already gone. They had funds to replace it already, so it should be up again by the end of the year.
This film is unfortunately largely forgotten today, thanks to being overshadowed by Sally Fields' speech after winning her Oscar for it, often mocked as "You like me, you really like me" even though that's not what she actually said.
I really like Sally Fields
I definitely hadn’t heard of this film, but had definitely heard of her speech. I stumble on the actual speech earlier this week.
The director Robert Benton was a toddler in the totally real town this was set in when it was set. It was a real town then and is today and almost an extension of Dallas.
So glad you did a reaction to this, I truly love this movie!! ❤ great reaction btw. 🌹🌹
Saw this movie in the theater. The tornado scene freaked me out. The whole movie made young me feel deeply uncomfortable.
That scene was Incredible! Definitely sucked me in!
That last scene made me cry 😿
Great pic pick! Love this movie!!
Great review thanks! I loved the film my only gripe is that they should have focused more on the relationship between the farm family we fall in love with. I would have loved to learn more about Moze's relationship with Will or even Frank/Possum. The side cheating stories were a distraction. Still a great film up there with Tender Mercies
My parents grew up in the south during this era. The sheriff was probably a good father/husband, but he was probaly also a racist. This was 1930's Texas.
She had no job or life skills outside of raising kids and taking care of a home in 1935 Texas and lived in a large place with electricity. But her husband left a lot of debt. $3000 plus left to owe on a rural Texas home back then was a lot, even just having to pay $480 a year on it. Yet she managed to pay 6 months worth toiling away on a new cotton farm when the market price was extremely low. She did great and followed the advice of a homeless man despite the fact he was the wrong race to follow in that time.
Wayne and his mistress are husband and wife in real life.
Norma Rae is a another good Sally Field movie.
Yay! I love this movie!
To this day I still never rock a rocking chair with nobody in it.
I haven't seen this one yet but now that I watched your reaction I enjoyed it so much I think I'm going to watch it.🥰
Awesome! Hope you enjoy the film.
Love this. Thanks
I couldn't help worrying that getting blood on the cotton would ruin its value.
Oh I didn’t even think of that. Probably a good point!
It was very impressionable. The script was excellent and the story was interesting. The scene with the KKK angers me to death as one of my closest friends was attacked by them...yes in real life...and so this movie hits me hard. But ...that's the sign of a good movie. If it can affect you emotionally then it's obviously written well and acted well..
i luv ur vids, u should do casa blanca from old hollywood
I think I can manage! Here ya go: ua-cam.com/video/NPds3xj6EeQ/v-deo.html
I’ve no idea why they ended with dead husband and boy…made no sense…was it a flashback? Left me with questions…
In those days many people were Bible reading people of faith who believed that for the Christian, death was only the end of life on this earth, but the beginning of eternal life in heaven. I think the ending simply symbolized that in the afterlife, for true believers, no matter who did what to whom while on this earth, we will all have ultimate communion and perfect harmony. I couldn't imagine a more perfect ending, but there are a lot less people of faith nowadays, so it can be a bit of a mystery if you're unfamiliar with the Bible.
