Can you do a video on Desmond doss? The ww2 medic who never took a weapon. That or "Mad jack", the man who took a fking bow & arrow AND a claymore into the frontlines of the war
When my autistic son acted up at school here in CA (about a decade ago), and teachers were at wit’s end, they would put him in a room next to the principal’s office. It was all white, empty, no furniture, no books, nothing to do for hours except scream until he fell asleep. You can imagine our “burn it all down” reaction when we found out about it. The principal was fired.
@@MalikF15 We had absolutely no idea it was happening. He couldn’t tell us. We learned from a teacher who didn’t want to be identified. The school district was not equipped to handle autistic kids of any level, they were scrambling to put something in place. He eventually was transferred to a private school for special needs kids, paid for by the school district. He’s graduated now. He tunes pianos as a hobby, maybe a future career. Born with one ear, he can identify any note, tunes by ear, transcribes music note by note, no matter how many channels. All that other stuff is behind us now, he’s doing fine.
I went to a special school for special needs kids. They had a couple of these. Fortunately they always had the lights off in them with the only light coming from a window on the door. Maybe they grew a conscience?

I've heard the Blood Eagle was never a real torture and is likely the result of a mistranslation in its description. Also, hanging in Henry VIII day was not done to be quick by breaking the neck like it was in the 19th century. It was meant to be a strangulation and torturous.
whether blood eagles existed or not, nobody really knows. all accounts about them were written a couple hundred to a few hundred years after the events they depict. that being said so were the sagas about ragnar and people act like his existence is fact because of a show lol
This is definitely one of the more unique channels to react to, and definitely in a good way. I’d love to see VTH do a reaction to the video ‘know your allies: Britain’. It’s an informational video made by the war department to educate their troops on who they’re fighting with and against and it’s a really interesting insight into how 40’s America viewed Britain and in some ways how little Britain has changed and how much Britain has changed in other ways.
I know Tronheim is in the North of Norway, that they have a football club called Rosenborg that used to play loads of seasons in the Champions League before football got commercialised and Americanised. I even remember some of the players if I'd see their names. But I do not know a lot about Norway. I do know that Kaiser Wilhelm vacationed there around the time when the WW1 started.
@@SvenElven Well most American's don't know anything about Norway. But yeah you learn something new everyday. I this day and age it's really important.
Death by eels is a method I only have heard of, but it's supposed to come from the roman Empire and consist in a person being lowered in a big flagon for wine, but it's full of eels instead.
@randomperson6433 just the ordinary saragossa sea eels. I guess it is a story on how to make your slaves behave. And they are known to be found in beach washers.
Crucifixion is still on the books today as a rarely used punishment in several countries, including, but not limited to, Saudi Arabia, Yeman, and Iran. In fact, in Iran, if a person survives crucifixion for three days, they are free to go.
Trondheim fortress was as a fun fact, also the fortress that was being attacked by Karl the 12th of Sweden (Carolus Rex) in at the time, Denmark-Norway when he was shot. Supposedly the projectile used to shoot him was a button (myth/rumour). So theres that. Also its really pretty and lots of northern lighs :)
On the physical vs mental torture front, I have spoke to friends who are special forces about this before, and without exception, they all said they would rather be tortured physically than mentally. Their primary reason for this judgement... The body will heal, but the mind won't. If your mind is broken, you will never be right again, and if the mind is gone, you are no longer really you anymore.
So, blood eagle is a complicated thing. In the sources it's called "rista örn" meaning "to carve the eagle." In the "Þáttr af Ragnars sonum", yes, it's described as you would expect it to be described based on the popular belief, but according to an Anglo-Saxon chronicle the victim of the blood eagle from this saga - king Ælla of Northumbria - died in battle, which lead some to believe "the blood eagle" is more of a poetical metaphor for dying in battle, because, well birds will appear on battlefields and will munch on those bodies. We have to remember that most of the Norse sources were written by Christians, who rarely had a good understanding of the original beliefs. Of course, we also have the account of the execution of Torf-Einarr. There blood eagle is described as the sacrifice to Odinn (important to note human sacrifices weren't common for the Norse people. We only have accounts of sacrifices that are basically executions of those who committed crimes). It also seems to be implied that blood eagle, even if it was done, was reserved only for the worst of the worst for the worst of worst actions.
On the 3 dutch flags, the red one is our official, the orange-white-blue was the main flag during the republic area and also the prinsenflag. But many rightwing people nowedays want the orange one to repleace our red one bc orange is the dutch royal colour. I like both of them.
Regarding crucifixion, just wanted to point out that Titus wasn't emperor when he conquered Jerusalem. His father Vespasian was. Titus would become the emperor about a decade later.
10:20 That is exactly my thought every time I hear something like that, that is also the reason why I am highly suspicious about the masterminds behind stuff like "Saw" or even "Squid Game" ... the people coming up with ideas like this are still around. They make movies now.
One of the reasons we aren’t sure if the Blood Eagle is real or not is that old Norse used a lot of Kenningar. Now basically, you could call them “euphemisms”, because instead of saying “there was a battle”, they would write “and thus went a sword-storm”. What makes it more complicated is that the euphemisms were very context-heavy and were often either references to something or a methaphor, for example a hand was sometimes called “hawk-mountain” because of falconry, so without knowing the context of some of the writings it can be hard to know what specifically is meaning talked about. Another layer of complexity is when they use a euphemism in a euphemism. If they say “hjörva viður” (sword-wood) it’s referring to a soldier, but by saying soldier it’s just referring to a man (regardless if it’s in the context of them being a soldier or not, it’s still a euphemism for a man) So yeah we aren’t sure if the blood eagle was specifically the thing we think it is, or if in some cases it was an enigma of euphemisms
a form of the iron maiden was used in German concentration camps, e.g. in Auschwitz I, it was called BUNKER and consisted of standing cells as part of the prison.
Honorable mention: "If thou wilt needs marry, marry a fool; for wise men know well enough what monsters you make of them". I can't wait to play this at Thanksgiving.
2:50 During the Irish Troubles, in 1971 the British used psychological torture as well as beatings on suspected IRA Volunteers (about half of the time they were wrong).
20:19 I don't remember the exact dates of this event But there was a discussion of whether the Hittite empire even existed. Only in the eighties, did we find evidence I believe.
Well, I'm not going to say " Great video " because...... well, the topic was pretty brutal. Anyway, there were a few that I had never heard of before, so I'll say " informative video " this time. History isn't always pleasant, so I appreciate the reactions. Keep up the good work.
There's a joke that Michael from VSauce has never quite been the same since he intentionally White Room tortured himself, lol. That Mind Field episode is a good watch, if you get a chance. People don't handle lack of stimulus well.
I find the whole concept of torture to be so disturbing that I get something of a panic attack just thinking of it. My only hope for humanity is we (mostly) abandon it, although way too many people seem to hint at bringing it back.
At least I didn’t get the shoutout at the start of this one like I did the LAST time VTH covered horrible execution methods!!! Lol. 😅😂😂 (Not calling anyone out, cough cough). FYI, the Italy trip is fantastic and I called Chris out for doing that at the base of the Palatine Hill, so that will always be a special memory. Lol.
The narrator said last time, Western civilization used torture was Guadalcanal. I guess Waco didn’t count. Also, water boarding in the early 2000s after 911 didn’t count.
Vsauce has a great video about the white room thing. He spend couple of days in one himself and you can clearly see his state getting worse and worse in just that short time.
I'm glad to see that the Spanish Inquisition is not even mentioned. Finally the myth has been abandoned, historically it only used 3 non-bloody methods of torture, the garrucha, the rack and the water torment.
Okay...so how did they get the rope under the ship for the Keel Hauling? Did someone dive with the rope under the ship before, which would be highly dangerous just so they can punish someone else? Did they always have a rope ready that went under the ship to begin with for the small chance they had to punish someone? Getting a rope from one side of the ship below the ship to the other side of the ship on the open seas seems...impossible?
Heavymetal or rap blasting all day and making you crazy is just called living next to other people in the US. It is not torture, unless most of my neighbors have tortured me all my life.
The worst part (to me, a person who has never been tortured) about physical torture would be the psychological trauma and not necessarily the beatings and assaults themselves. SO to say that psychological torture isn't as bad kinda misses the point behind physical torture.
If you're being tortured for information, you'll say whatever you think the other person wants to hear, in order to make it stop. If you don't have the information the other person is seeking, you'll just make something up. That's what makes information obtained through torture inherently unreliable. Objectively speaking, torture does not work. And torture as punishment is just cruelty for cruelty's sake, in my opinion.
