The thing I found most depressing about the first ending is when Gary dies and Ib looks at him she thinks "he's sleeping" it's kinda sad she dosent really know

Out of all the RPGmaker games it's the overall best. Not the deepest of plots but it weaves it in a way where it doesn't need to be. It also is one of the few to use a lot of custom sprite and music work which gives it bonus points.

In the "Memory's Crannies" and "Forgotten Portrait" ending, I think Ib will remember Garry after on, because she had his candy on her pocket
Mary wasn't trapped in the world because she didn't even ENTER the way Ib and Gary did, she's not meant to leave because she IS PART of the world. She was truly a painting and isn't meant to be apart of the normal world, even if she wanted to be real, she'll never be anything but a drawing. No matter what she escapes from.

My favourite ending was definitely Promise of Reunion. Personally I don't give a crap about Mary because:
-she's a painting
-she SLOWLY AND MERCILESSLY kills Garry in more than one ending
-yes, I know she's been trapped in the Fabricated Gallery for godknowshowlong but still.. don't you think that fact that she'll actually take Garry's life just to leave the fabricated world is just..? o.o

I wanted to say that she behaves a like a child of the age which she looks like... But then I went to artbook, looked through human proportions through the ages, compared her head size to the size of her body and...
Oh my. Ib and Mary have proportions of 4.5 or 5 head to their height. That gives us... from 2 to 7 yo. Hm...
Gary's proportions seem to place him as looks like adult from 18+. Comparing to his height in mirror, it seems like Ib is somewhere around 6 or 7yo.
Anyways if Mary is depicted as kid of around 6-7yo, then, yeah, it's an age where kids only start to get an incling that other kids do not think as they do, and with interaction, they'd start developing empathy. *Especially if she wasn't raised in society interacting with other kids*.
There were some creatures that could talk in Fabricated World; and there were someyimes scared humans. It seems like none of them helped Mary develop into reasonable human being.
Anyways, I'm not protecting Mary. Yep, she's portraed as quite selfish and unstable creature. Don't like her.
But one thing to say: what made me interested in this game in the first place is fanart where a theme of trinity was repeated: like Ib, Gary and Mary are complex personalities that have tjeir meani g and aspiration. So. After watching walkthrough, I feel a bit sad: Mary never came to be likable and sophisticated enough to give impression of third force that affects story.

Just from curiosity, why do people like Mary? Not saying it's a "wrong" choice, but I'm just curious why people like her and think Together Forever is better than Promise of Reunion?
I mean from when you meet Garry, he helps you pretty much all the way even if you're a dick towards him. Genuinely a nice person, even if a bit patronizing.
Mary on the other hand isn't even a real person (until the Together Forever ending) and that seems to be her only goal. She just wants to become a real human. Nothing wrong with that, but the fact that she is willing to flat out kill Ib and Garry to get what she wants, it's just sickening and self-centered... so to me she really just seems like a psycho. Even in the Together Forever ending, she acts like a spoiled brat and even eats the candy Garry gave Ib, therefore erasing all possible memories of him.
Point is that I just see Mary as someone who wants something just for themselves and is willing to literally destroy everything and everyone standing in her way... which fits the description of way too many villains. If she was somewhat more considerate, I might feel sympathy for her, but as she is, I just can't.
Actually, Garry may very well be a painting too. It is assumed that he is real since he said he was lost in the museum, implying that he got trapped there, but he may only think that he came from the outside. Note that when he "dies" his painting is labeled as the "forgotten painting" and so his origins may not be known to himself as it was not known to the museum until he died. Note that both Garry and Mary's paintings are the only ones not in the original museum.

This might be pretty late for comment, but there is someone looks like Gary at the beginning of the game, examining on one of Guertena's works.
He might as well be Gary, but Ib didn't know him at that time. If that was real Gary then He was somehow dragged into the fabricated World as well.
Pasathon Mayakool yeah, I'm pretty sure that is actually Garry. During the game, he also knows about and has seen the paintings in the real world. I'm about 99 percent sure that Garry is real.

Well, consider the fact that Mary is quite literally psychotic. True, you might feel sorry for her for being locked up in the Fabricated World for so long, and you can't blame her for going a little insane in the meantime, but the fact remains that she IS insane. And her obsession with Ib strikes me personally as a bit creepy, actually, so I find "Together Forever" actually slightly disturbing as an ending, even if Ib doesn't remember what Mary did. I mean, she was willing to go THROUGH Garry to leave with Ib, quite literally, so yeah, that should tell you something about her mental state. It's easy to say that you feel sorry for her (which I do), but that doesn't change the fact that Mary is emotionally and mentally unstable, and if she's willing to kill Garry to leave and forcibly insert herself into Ib's family once she does, it's clear that that's not normal behavior. Say what you will about Garry, but I find the prospect of him ending up back in the real world (which is where he originally came from) far less disturbing than the prospect of a clearly insane painting taking his place.
i don't understand why some people think together forever is a good ending. yeah you can feel sorry for a girl that just wants to be loved, but you can't when she's willing to kill someone just to get her happy ending.
aznblueangel Interestingly enough, during the epilogue for "Together Forever" (that all-black scene when Mary either eats the candy or throws away Garry's lighter), the same music plays as when you get a Game Over. As far as I'm aware--and mind you, I could be wrong--this is the only ending in which the Game Over music plays. Could Kouri possibly have chosen that particular soundtrack for the ending because it was meant to be the "bad" ending, perhaps? Not to mention that "Together Forever" is the only ending aside from "Promise of Reunion" that actually has an ending graphic, and since it's made pretty clear that "Promise of Reunion" is the "best" ending, it would cause an interesting sort of symmetry with "Together Forever" as the "worst". Just a thought (although I personally consider any variant of "Ib All Alone" as the worst).

If you haven't played them yet I'd recommend Yume Nikki and its fan sequels.They're not games you quite beat although they have endings but rather you just explore. They have some of the best original atmosphere I've encountered in games period and their vagueness lets you put together the plot yourself like the Souls games.
Here's how to get the endings I know:

•Garry Doom must be activated
•Mary Bond must not be activated
• During the Leap Of Choices (that's what I call it) choose to go with fake mother or fake Garry
"Welcome To The World Of Guentrean"
•Fail the doll room
•Ib should sit across from Garry
•Mary should come back after she leaves
"A Painting's Demise"
•Fail the doll room
•Ib should sit across from Garry
• Leave with Mary
• Jump into the painting
• Go around the museum (no one should appear) until Mary says she is lonely.
"Together, Forever"
•Garry Doom should be activated
• Don't destroy Mary's frame, just leave
• Mary should succeed her plan.
• Go to your family, Mary should be there
"Promise Of Reunion"
•Gary Bond should be the only one activated
•Give Garry what he need after the Burnt Girl scene or Mary's death
•Talk to Garry after the Leap Of Choices scene
• You may see the rest
"Sacrifice"
•Gary Bond and Mary Bond should be active
• Mary makes you do a choice
Choose "Both"
•After Ib's Rose scene walk the exit with Garry and Mary
• You may see the rest
"Memories Crannies"
• Nothing should be activated
• Talk to Garry after the Leap Of Choices

• Do the same with Together Forever but look at the new painting where the Hanged Man was
While Gary's bond should be up for the Promise of Reunion ending, you can still get that ending even with Mary's bond up if you burn her painting. Similarly, the difference between Together Forever and Forgotten Portrait is that you burn Mary's painting before leaving in the latter. And Sacrifice is a fan-made ending only available in the "Ib: Green Edition" mod.
Garry is really a great character. He took care and even sacrificed himself for a little girl he just met, what a big brother material lol. I wish the creator would show what happen after the promise of reunion

You literally just step away and get Ib All Alone and Ib just stands there. I think this is only possible if Garry dies though.

In case if you're wondering about Gary, here's how it works
There are 2 systems
The Garry Doom Counter
And
The Garry Bond
The Garry Doom Counter is 7 things that raise up 1 on the counter that choose whether Garry lives or not in the toy box.
If 3 of the 7 things are done or more, Garry's doom counter activates, and he'll die in the toy box. If 2 or less of the 7 things are done, he lives. But if a few particular things are done, Garry is far too much from being saved.
The Garry Bond is 10 things, when done , will give you the chance to get "Promise Of Reunion". If 8 out of the 10 things are done, Garry will ask you for Ib's handkerchief and wipe his hand. After the ??? World scene, talk to Garry and he'll remember you, the dolls, the lights, the rooms, the paintings and Mary.
You can only get "Promise Of Reunion" if your Garry Doom Counter isn't activated or else you'll get "Ib All Alone" and all the other ones
+Jose Campos i think you mean only get promise of reunion if garry doom counter is 0 cause if you destroy one thing in the musem the ending automaticly gets locked

In the Together Forever End I think Garry's candy represented Garry's rose. As a normal candy would do, it dissolved in Mary's mouth, leaving the only the wrapper. Mary ripped off all the petals from Garry's rose, and only the stem was left. See where I'm getting at?

This is SO SAD. I got Together Forever the first time and Garry died and I couldn't STAND IT! I hadn't made enough save points to go back and change things so I started over, smashed my way through the game again as fast as I could, and then I got Memory's Crannies...phew. I can handle that. Promise of Reunion is my favorite though obviously...cutest thing ever...break my freakin heart why dontcha.

So this is where it all started for me. I remember being so curious about this game but knowing I'm not the best at puzzles I wanted to see the whole story and all ends, that's how I found this channel and loved the effort of finding even secret endings and how well he narrates and how well he uses pauses to let us rest, to let the game story sink in, and his absolutely killer punchlines. And now he is nearly 2 M, so well deserved! ❤

Y can there no be an all encompassing happy ending where all three of them leave. Gary = father or brother figure to ib, and Mary escapes to be ib's new sister. Would be such a happy ending.

Not all stories have a happy ending. If there was a “good” ending then it would take away the emitional impact of the other endings since they arent the “good” your supposed to get.
Well there was a happy ending, it was the "Promise of Reunion" ending... Surely Mary wasn't in it but u can't have a happy ending with the main villain winning
rubberduckey111 I also would have liked a "Perfect"/"Good Ending" where all of them survived and got to the real world. However, Mary would probably go full-on Yandere with Gary, due to him and Ib bonding quite a bit during the story. And it would take away the emotional impact of the other endings. However, this "Ending" could be the most difficult out of every ending in the whole entire game so the player would most likely see a couple of other endings while experimenting and eventually finding the "Perfect Ending".
Just a thought...
It's because Garry and Mary couldn't live in the same space without killing one another. If Garry knows about Mary's secret, he'd have to kill her because she's not a real person and could potentially harm Ib, posing as an imposter in the real world too. Also, if Mary knew that Garry knew her secret (Which she does as evidenced by some of the endings) then she would try to kill him once they arrived in the real world. It just doesn't work to have both alive, especially when Ib never remembers unless Garry reminds her of their time spent in the horror painting. If Ib manages to remember what happened, then Mary is done. There's no way she'd buy the lie that Mary's her sister, and find a way to prove it with Garry or kill her. It's a paradoxical ending, which is part of why the game does such a good job expositioning for it's characters.The only case scenario in which they all live is if Garry and Mary aren't aware of each other's existence, which I highly doubt could happen if Mary knows so much about the world. Even then, Ib wouldn't be able to see Garry and that's almost worse as an ending.
They're all illusions created by the painting world. Her parents don't even exist in that world and in the other the actual Garry is dead by that point.
I know the Mary ending where she leaves with Ib is a bad ending but personally, I like it. I mean sure Mary is a painting but she's been alone all that time. She just wanted to make a friend to be with. I mean sure she took it way to far with her trying to kill Gary (or succeeding). I kinda wish that there would be an ending where both Gary and Mary live. Well to be honest if there was, Mary would probably stop you from talking to Gary at the end. But hey, that's just me.

Together Forever is a slightly better ending than Promise of Reunion. Garry still lives in a sense in Together Forever as a painting in Mary's place; since the frame wasn't destroyed and Mary's a real girl now, something would need to take the picture's place. Who else but Garry? He replaces Hanged Man in Forgotten Portrait, so most likely replaces Mary (Which wasn't seen in the real world, mind you) in Together Forever. So technically, in the same way Mary's alive but not real, Garry would most likely return to 'life' and take her place.
Of course, this is only a theory; I could be totally totally wrong.
Actually, I'm pretty sure he's dead. Plus, his picture doesn't appear in the ending, "Together Forever." So, he's dead. No beating around the bush. I'd say it's the 3rd best ending, since Mary gets to have her dreams come true. 1st and 2nd being the ones where Garry manages to escape too.
still, think promise of reunion is a better ending than together forever because Garry (me) and Ib stuck together in the gallery and kept eachother alive, so it was something special.

I despise Memories' Crannies, it's one of the worst endings to me. Because not only does Mary get blasted to oblivion, Garry and Ib lose memory of everything. They never met.
Arguably there's no genuinely "good" ending to Ib. No matter what, someone has to die. With that card on the table, nothing wins.
but the ending promise of reunion that's really how i see it's supposed to end. they kill the thing they were supposed to kill, and they get back to their own world, forgetting everything. then Garry pulls out the hankerchief ib gave him, and they remember everything

dang I have no idea how to even get half of these endings! I just played through the game for the first time, I might play it again!
I like both Together Forever and Promise, because I like both Garry and Mary. Garry is a kind man who helped Ib from the start without question. ((But he is a man so stop shipping him with Ib who is literally a child freaks!)) And Mary who, while supposed to be in the painting world, doesn’t want too. I mean, we’ve seen that place! It’s pretty bad, I wouldn’t want to live there either. She doesn’t deserve to be a human, but does any human really? It’s not her fault she’s a painting, what she does is bad, yes. But she grew up in such a fucked up world! Do you think she would truly understand that stuff?
My favorite was the last one where they remember. I'm so happy I watched this one. Cryaotics video made me cry!

There just had to be an ULTIMATE good ending where, if the relation-counter to Garry AND Mary exceeds a certain limit of positivities, that they would be able to leave together and remembering each other..
Tbh, I actually couldn't stand Mary's selfish attitude at first and I really wished her to burn in hell for the "Welcome to the World of Guertena" or "Together Forever"-endings, BUT at a second glance and studying up the wiki for all possible endings and how to achieve them, I really feel there is a waste of Mary's bond counter in merely playing a role between these 2, actually really cruel endings and also the fact that Mary can only be "satisfied" at the sheer expense of Ib, Garry or both of them doesn't make it any better.
I understand she's not supposed to live in the "real world" from the start on, but if that already was indeed possible in "Together Forever" then why in the world it HAS to be without Garry?
Yes it adds to the addictiveness the player feels to the characters if there's always that kind of compromise, I get it, but then again it would have been even more awesome to figure out if there was a way to overcome that compromise in case the player does everything right, thus and parallelly even breaking an unwritten law of these type of horror games where a true honest ending never seems possible..
I had a perfect ending for this game. Since Mary was alone and wanted to escape the place but couldn't due to the fact that no one will replace her. The three finds and beats Guertena until he faints, throws him into the portrait and the three leave for the real world. :D
I can't help but wonder, what if you ate the candy, but didn't actually take the lighter or destroy Mary? The Together Forever ending involves the candy at the end, so would it just skip that part?

Man, this game is awesome. I really love the good ending.
The one where Garry remembers from the Handkerchief is a sweet ending and all, but personally I think the one where Mary takes his place in the world as Ib's sister a much sweeter ending. Sucks that Garry did not die in that one, instead is in an eternal slumber, as death would have been a better alternative... however, Mary is given the chance to actually exist; the chance to actually make a difference in the world and be an actual person, not a mere fabrication created by some painter.
I sorta wish there was one more ending where you could save both Mary and Garry... I answered I would save them both when Mary asked me and I meant it. Of course, since I got the last ending here, I didn't really see Mary's sadistic glee with plucking the rose. But even still... I want to be able to save everyone.

I like that Ib has so many endings because you can see the qualities of each character:
-Ib's loyalty to Garry
-Gary's Willingness to sacrifice himself for Ib

I actually really liked "Together Forever," even though Garry is forever trapped in the Fabricated World, I felt pretty sorry for Mary, seeing as she was born in that world and never had a chance to see the outside world, forever alone from the start. And Ib and Mary both looked pretty happy together in the end... But Garry.... ahhh I wish all three could have escaped together TT TT
I wish there was a happy ending for the 3 of them...since Mary is not a bad girl. She just has been lonely for a long time and she's curious about how people live, I think she just wanted to make friends.
Promise of reunion was best ending.If only it had Garry kissing IB on the forehead like in mad father

LD You're right, only I ship them once they're older and both adults. The roses, the candy, the handkerchief... It's all very sweet and sentimental. Too much for just a mere friendship. I think going through such a crazy and scary event draws them together.

Together Forever is probably my favorite ending :') Mary is finally able to leave Guertena's world! How awesome is that!

There is something else though... If you do the right things (I can't remember what they were) you'll get to the entrance of the gallery and instead of jumping through the painting, there will be a staircase leading down to more rooms and one of the first ones has a painting called "Concealed Secret". :)

I felt so sad when Mary had picked off Garry's petals for the first time.. Poor Garry. But I still feel sorry for Mary.
My theory on this game? All 3 of them were paintings. Because that ending with the "forgotten portrait" it shows Garry. Maybe all the events leading up to the "nightmare" were just fabricated (like a painting), and all 3 were trying to break out into the real world and live. The game does make kind of a point that the artist put quite a bit of thought into his work.
Honestly, the ending "Together, Forever" and "Promise of Reunion" has given me a lot of feelings.
First off, I do not think that Together, Forever is that bad of an ending, but it also is at the same time. The fact that Mary, who is Guertana's (or however you spell that man's name) piece of work, has been wanting to become alive just goes to show that there was a period in that artist's life that he was feeling like Mary, trapped and unreal, unseen and not known. That could have possibly been conveyed into Mary which made her come to life, yearning to be "truly alive" in the alternative universe that we live in. However, she would have to trade a life for a life. And as a dead being cannot rise again, the only way is to take someone else's life and "put" it in her own body. So in this way, it just seems like a very sad sob story. But what I do not like about this ending is the fact that she was willing to take someone else's life just to become alive. However (Again?), this being has never experienced other emotions such as pity and morality, so it is a given that she would be willing to kill for herself as she has never been taught the "proper" morals of our universe.
Now, for the Promise of Reunion. I sort of like to actually think that Gary is actually delusional. What if Gary did not want to grow up and the fact that he wears such sloppy looking clothing and keeps his hair in such a sloppy manner could indicate that he is unable to take good care of himself and that could be caused by the fact that he is stuck with a mind set of not being society's real "adults". That is why he could enter this alternate universe, he has the mind of a child but is still an adult in some sense. Like the fact that he knows he is older and all that. I believe that there is just a part of him that is still child-like thus he is able to interact with Ib and can enter the universe. After all, none of us knows how he even got in there, though it is assumed that he went in the same way as Ib.
There's also another theory of mine where Gary is also a work of the artist and neither Gary or Mary are real people. That means this entire ordeal was all part of Ib's idealogy of friends. That is because she is so quiet and is unlikely to have friends, which can be an indicator that she is closed off and may have a world of her own. That is how Mary and Gary is born. Also, notice how their names rhyme? It could be like Gary was the male version of Mary or something. So Gary and Mary are both constantly competing with each other to have a place in Ib's heart. Why is that so? I think that is because as Ib grows big, they know that her world will grow smaller and if both of them wants to survive, they know one of them has to go, but neither are willing to. So they fight for her love and trust. So yeah.
Feel free to debate on this as well. 😂 I really have lots of theories on this game.
Together Forever.... i found that ending very cute :3 but i just wish there was an ending when gary, ib, and mary get to be together...

Ib one of the games that made me start watching content creators.
I see this as the first video of him to blow up.
My first/only playthrough, I got the promise of reunion ending. Felt so...SO happy. I can't imagine how I'd have felt with the others, Forgotten Portrait makes me cry and Together, Forever makes me livid. Everything else just has your mouth hanging with an "awww dip!".
I am wondering, at 8:45, what happens when you answer "I dont mind"? Will Mary keep Ib's rose?
I've always wanted an ending which these 3 can go together because I loved Garry... and ... Mary was like a sister to Eve! ... I love them all.....!
