A Walk Through the U.S. Army Transportation Museum

- After completing my Train Odyssey 4, I spent several days traveling up and down the east coast in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina visiting museums and historic sites, and visiting friends. Of these, my first stop was the U.S. Army Transportation Museum in Fort Eustis, Virginia, near Newport News.
I had anticipated that this museum would be a few trucks parked somewhere near the gate of the fort, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find that it was a large, world class museum.

I remember riding on the Duty Train while my father was stationed in Berlin. My father worked out of the RTO and would have to work on the train. We were allowded to join him. Fun times...

Sure has grown since the 70s
I was in the Army as a mechanic in the 70s great to see some my vehicles again .
As a senior officer we always referred to Ft. Eusilis as Ft Useless. Second yet far more important is in every war, the Army looses 70% of the casualties.
Good Army lore. Sets precedence for our current day Air force.
When I was stationed there from '82 - '85, the museum was small. The Skycrane was the gate guard, and the "Eve Of Destruction" gun truck was outside with several other vehicles. I missed Bill Mauldin's being there to dedicate a new jeep display by a day. Read about in the post's newspaper the next day. It would have been nice if it had been announced it the previous week's edition. I would love to go back and visit the museum and post. Enjoyed being stationed there.

The steam loco was used by the aliies in Europe replacing those wrecked in the war and for logistics too during it.

Thanks for the pictures of the two "German" cars. The caboose cars accompanied U.S. Army military freight trains. From Helmstedt to Berlin. You can read the story of this caboose in my video in the description. The sleeping car ran in the military trains from Frankfurt/Main and Bremerhaven to Berlin-Lichterfelde-West. Brings back the old days when the military had 60% of the budget.Some of those projects you knew they were pissing in the wind on,but they were interesting.In the end,I think we got more for our money back then.
The contents of the museum are well showcased and, as always, the time you spent capturing it is appreciated. However, of all the training available at Fort Eustis, proofreading does not appear to have been on the roster (50:55 was hardly the first example you photographed).
hey you seem like a pretty knowledgeable guy about older computers and was wondering if you have ever heard of a company that used to be pretty big in the 60's, 70's and 80's called Control Data Corporation". if so, do you know anyone who worked there?
davidgriffin14, not sure why you chose to make a computer comment on a military museum video. But yes, I am aware of the Control Data Corporation. But I have no insight into past employees of that outfit.
Could you please advise what the costs of admission was for the museums that you visited in the Newport News Area? Thanks.
Not sure why that would be significant. Most museums charge a pittance for entry, if they even charge at all. I don't know any more what I might have paid for the Newport News area museums, but since most (all?) military museums are free to the public, I thing the Army Transportation museum was also free. The Mariners Museum might have charged a few dollars, but nothing significant.
