I work at a public aquarium. We net hundreds of fish with many different types of nets. I can tell you the rubber nets ARE easier on fish than nylon or string nets. I have seen fish bruise and lose scales from the most delicate handling in a nylon net. You don’t know unless you can watch them in a tank for weeks after

Love my fishpond with the confluence release. Couldn’t have a hollow metal net banging around all day while I am walking. Great to see more videos, Kelly!
One other advantage to a longer handled net such as the Fishpond Emerger or Mid-length net is that it can become an emergency wading stick, I know I used mine in some precarious situations. I have the Fishpond rubber caps on the ends of my nets for better grip on the substrate.
One thing I've heard is the Rising are FREEZING if you're fishing in colder climates. I personally use a Frabill and used a FP net replacement for my frabill since it works with my GearKeeper retractor system well. Great video about mechanical advantage and also for some of us Euro Nymphers!
very good video! A couple years ago I bought a Fishpond mid length net, and just love it. Last fall I bought a Fishpond net that was shorter, but also fit my needs. The longer net is better. While looking at nets the Rising was really the only net I considered, and I ended up with the Fishpond because it floats. I've lost way too many nets in dark stained water!
Yep bought my long handle net with the brown trout handle at your shop last year, worked great on the Madison
My net is as old as a I am and maybe just a little older than Kelly. I really need to find a new one so thanks for the tutorial. Keep the good stuff coming.
Thanks for the info. Enjoying my FP native. I have to crouch some and fumble a little at times but the small size makes up for it with ease of carry.

I own a carbon fiber net with a long handle. I spent almost all of last season with a magnetic release on the back of my vest. At first I thought I'd just try it, but the net weighs close to if not less than my wooden trout net. It really didn't feel that out of place. I never liked it tucked into a belt and literally the week after everything froze over I recieved a sling pack with a net sleeve. I wanted that on rainy days when I didn't want to wear my vest, but I'll give it a good test in the spring to see if I prefer that. But if you are questioning the long net and quick release give it a try. I like it just fine, you might too. Just take it off when you want to sit down, things get awkward fast ...
I have put tons of 2 foot plus bulls in my little fishpond native but a longer handle and bigger hoop sure would help. But it works great for the western Washington tiny trout.
Considering that you started the video saying “I rarely use a net”, I think it would be helpful to explain what situations warrant a net and explain why you choose not to use a net most of the time, before talking about how to choose a net.
I own several nets. The Brodin is very nice and light, but the rubber mesh net is not deep enough for 20 plus inch trout. The varnish eventually came off and I had to refinish the frame.I have a couple of Fishponds Nomad nets. They are very nice and solid, but are also pretty heavy when you wade for 6+ hours. The rubber bag has a bow in it, so when you land a large fish, the head is going to be out of the water while removing the hook. Last year I bought a new net sold by a Euro nymphing outfit. It's similar to the Frabill someone here already mentioned. The net is very light, deep, and has a flat bottom. It only cost $50 and so far it's my favorite net. The worst thing I can say about it is that the bag is a finer mesh and the hook can get caught in it making it a pain to remove.
Another great advantage of rubber nets vs. the old black nylon mesh is that your flies don't get caught up at all. I can't tell you how frustrating it used to be to try and unsnag a fly or both on a two fly rig from those fine nylon mesh nets!
I bought the Rising. My Simms sling bag has a “net sleeve” built in, and the longer handle prevents the net from falling out. I also thought the handle extension would be nice for canoe fishing. Nets are better for the fish, just like barbless hooks, less handling.
As the years have gone by, I’ve found myself using a net less and less. I usually have it on me (especially if bigger fish are around) but a lot of times I’m just fishing for brookies (some of whom wiggle through my net anyway) so it’s just easier and less “violent” to grab a palm full of water, grab the fish and boom, done…he’s back home in like 5 seconds.
Bought one of those small wood nets for $15 on sale. Been a good enough net for fish up to 20". Found many nets on streams including a Fishpond mid which is too long for my streams so gave it to my brother with a boat.
If you fish around beaver ponds always inspect the dam because beavers love to use lost nets in their dams.

For walk wading I picked up one of those cheap wood frame ones and replaced the shallow net with one of the fishpond net replacements. I did this because smaller fish I was catching in the mountain creeks were slipping through the holes.
That being said, If I were to get a boat or have a friend with a drift boat, I would probably go with the Rising Stubby Lunker net and get a couple of handle extension pieces, as you can easily walk with the stubby, but then be able to extend it for boat use.
🤣😅 I picked one of those cheapo nets from sierra, $20. I was using it ok with the bigger browns until I happened on a pod of brookies, after I needed him he went through the holes in the bottom. I really can't figure out how to carry one comfortably and on the rivers of Wisconsin, I really don't need one here. Out west I carry one though, especially in the slide area on the Madison just below the slide inn, where the water moves super quick.

I have a Brodin net I bought in the early 80’s. What were the mesh bags made from at that time . . . linen?
I knew you stepped into it when I heard you say it. Mostly because I say that kind of thing all the time and that’s all people remember.
It’s hard to find a really bad fly rod anymore but I get the pride of ownership thing too. A lot of people just don’t or can’t fish as often as I do, but they can always go to their closet and appreciate a really made rod or reel. That being said I still own way too many fly rods and reels.

Fishpond Emerger basket size for trout is perfect. I like the mid length handle not the short one.

Excellent video. I'm targeting pike in Alberta, fishing mostly from shore - like the longer handled net for mechanical advantage. Any thoughts on a boca grip instead of a net?
Boga grips are not suitable for pike (also not trout) only good for some saltwater species really
Frabill 17”x22” it’s what all the competition anglers I know use. Faster landings, safer releases. Big nets FTW.

If you want a great, reliable and easy process to replace net bag then get the Rising Nets. Fishpond makes great nets but they’re kind of tricky to replace the net bag. Rising net makes it so much easier to replace a net bag and their color options are what also caught my attention 👍
That longer handle helps with longer 12 ft leaders too…
i walk alot/bushwack, so low weight , linen nets are lighter than rubber, fishpond frame net combos are heavy IIRC
Longer handle for me all day. Even when I´m wade fishing I often opt for a guide/boat style net. Just more reach. Only when I do deep wading I go with a shorter handle net.

Those holes are too big for my fish.
If you want just one net, look for one with a deeper bag to accommodate larger lake fish. Most trout nets are shallow. Also, fish pond is over priced.

Fishpond prices are outrgeous. You can buy a graphite tennis racquet for nuthin'. They deliver a huge amount of force on a ball and withstand the abuse of an occasional spike on a court surface. IMHO - those expesive nets are just gouging ignorant but well monied fly fishers that don't wince at stupidly expensive gear. They probably made their fist model from a tennis racquet (which was a hell of an idea) Landing nets needs very little structural integrity to perform well. I don't begrudge companies that make massive profits off ignorant customers - that's what made/makes America great, but come on..... $225 for two dollars of material and labor.........
If you could start a company and do the same exact thing for 15-20% less than fishpond's prices you wouldn't do it?

Love it. I have nets but hate to pack em especially while wading. All nets are hard on fish even the rubberized versions.

maybe Kelly mentioned this but the only advice I’ve got for a fishing net is do not buy a dark colored net. They disappear underwater and down the river they go. I’ve set up for a picture and once I raised the fish the net started to drift away. I thought I would be able finish the picture and still locate the net. I was wrong. I had become accustomed to seeing the bright colored net but now the damn thing was camouflaged. Nice fish pond one too. So I go buy another because Fish pond combine the design with durability and as a poor guy I’m always walking so I like how lightweight they are. I did end up finding that net downstream a week or so later protruding out of some rocks. Then I had two! Lost the lost one again and lost the new one too. Now I only have one. Oh glad to see some new non fly tying videos! Would love to see more of Kelly fishing too! But we gotta pay those videos!! Worth it!
Fishpond mid length for me. Im short, the extra legth makes it much easier to land the fish. Also, the flat handle on the fishpond fits in my sling pack better and doesnt move around.
I prefer made in the USA. Fishpond supposedly out of Colorado but the sticker on the bottom of the handle said China. Both scoop fish fine but I find myself using my Rising over my Nomad because I like that American flag on the handle
