Can't believe how many of these I'm finding in every shop over the last 6 months. Almost all are dirt cheap and sound absolutely stunning!
How funny, it was only yesterday I was talking to my local record dealer about Pablo. I picked up Milt Jackson and Count Bassie Vol 2 and I was completely blown away by how good this record sounded. I then picked up vol 1. (Sarah Vaughan makes an appearance on it) Thanks for the video Chad

It's great that you talked about the Pablo record label recordings in this video, Chad. Norman Granz made it a mission to record and document the talents of many luminary jazz artists. When I think of Pablo Records, the first jazz great that comes to mind is Art Tatum. Tatum's Pablo Solo Masterpieces series and the Pablo Group Masterpieces especially are truly great. Art Tatum is one of those kind of guys that comes around once every 300 years, like Louis Armstrong. It truly is a giant pity that more people don't know about the extraordinary Art Tatum. You got me thinking about the blues albums you showed. That Alternate Blues album sounds like the cat's meow. 😻👍👍👍
The numerous 1975 and 1977 Montreux jazz festival jam LPs on Pablo were my gateway drug to jazz and all those 45 series on my shelves years later. Oscar, Milt, so much great music.

Yes! Great to bring up the Pablo label. So many people have been sleeping on these! Soul Fusion with Milt Jackson and Monte Alexander is 🔥 🔥 as well as Bag’s Bag Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, Cedar Walton and Billy Higgins. Then there’s Milt Jackson + Count Basie + The Big Band Vol 1.

For years I've said that Pablo Records was the hidden gem label in jazz. I've never heard one that didn't sound good.
Zoot Sims "Passion Flower" and Oscar Peterson & Dizzy Gillespie are 2 others of my favorites....along with Take Love Easy

I will second the 88 Basie Street. I have an original that was in a collection. I figured it was just a dollar record until I put it in the turntable. My jaw hit the floor at the music, playing, and quality of the sound. Wow! It jumps out of the speakers.
Picked up a couple of Pablo’s just last week by Sweets Edison and Roy Eldridge . Both excellent, must be best value jazz albums around on discogs
How cool is this, Chad! I remember when Jimmy Lee and you came to the NY Stereophile Show - i picked up a good number of these titles on CD by then… still have them in pristine condition. Will not trade them until i pass - and my kids sell them.
I’d have to say, these are some of the very best sounding CDs ASI put out - - ever.
I have “Time Keepers” , “Dizzy Gillesspie’s Big 4”, “Basie Jam”, “Basie 88 Street”, “This One’s for Blanton”, “Farmer’s Market Barbeque” (my absolute favorite). ( A couple were XRCD if i recall - that’s the versions i have of those…i can’t recall which right now.)
I’d like to acquire “In the evening”, “The Alternate Blues” - didn’t know they were out there under ASI. Will hunt them down.
I'm with you Man, they got older but they still played their assss offffffffff !!! All of those people don't know and hear what's going on ! Norman was very very difficult about what it could be edited or not ! I don't know and understand why Pablo is sooooooooooo underrated ... Blue Note Blue Note Blue Note ... but it represents ONLY 0.001 % of what it was recorded in Jazz .... People today are so narrow minded or not really interested in really what's up in this music ... Like Concord Records recorded hundreds of fabulous music that 90 % put in the toilet in those years but if you can see, today, Man !!!!!!!! Every thing is great, another fabulous sound engineer, PHIL EDWARDS, put upfront by Ray Brown, who was in his 20's in 1973, did a fabulous job. I put him in the same league as Roy Dunann.

I have a few Pablos, I love Satch & Josh. Good to know about these ones because originals can be picked up for reasonable prices.
count basie is my favourite jazz. artist . Farmers market barbecu is my favourite jazz record all time!!
I remember back in the late ‘90’s hearing that Analogue Productions 33rpm pressing of This One’s For Blanton! being used to demonstrate a VDH Grasshopper IV. I’m heart sorry I didn’t buy a copy of that album on the spot.

Excellent review Chad. The Pablos from the Fantasy 45 series are really excellent. Have them all. But even the standard releases are really good. There are so many Basie titles Pablo did they take up most of a single shelf. Some of the pablo titles were pressed by RCA's Indy plant which are quite good. Not sure who pressed the others; Allied Records in LA?

Duke's Big 4 is incredible sounding. The drum whacks on Cotton Tail and the Hawk Talk will test your audio system's dynamic, transient, and bass. One of my system test records.

Totally agree about the general greatness of Pablo. Two of my other favorites: Milt Jackson and Oscar Peterson, Ain’t But a Few of Us Left; Zoot Sims plays Johnny Mandel: Quietly There.
This one's for blanton is my favourite Pablo record.
I've got around 20 Pablo releases on vinyl, all original releases except for Dizzy Gillespie's Big 4, an Analogue Productions album, and I have to agree with everything Chad has said about the label and performances. They are some of the best sounding recordings/pressings I own and the music is nothing to sneeze at. These are all legends, old pros that seem to do everything to near perfection without seeming to put forth any effort to do so. An honorable mention I'd like to add would be The Dizzy Gillespie 6 - Dizzy's Party. Just an amazing recording that transports the listener into the studio and it never fails to get my body moving. I've enjoyed picking these up on the cheap but I'm afraid the secret is getting out and prices are going up up up.
I bought a lot of these in the 1970s with the Blanton and Big 4 being standouts. The best album for me in the whole Pablo output was Basie and Zoot which was one of the finest albums ever by both men. I would recommend a listen/purchase to anyone who has not heard/does not have this .

My favorite all time Pablo is Joe Pass “Virtuoso.” I have a decent nu,ber of Pablos but none are better that I’ve ever heard.
Joe Pass' Virtuoso is a truly great album. Have you heard the Pablo recordings of Art Tatum? If you're familiar with Tatum, then you know that he's on the same level as Louis Armstrong.

One of my Pablo’s is a wonderful vinyl record of Sarah Vaughan during the years where her voice was turning more velvety. Would’ve been nice if Sarah recorded with Mel Torme… Perhaps she already has and I don’t know about it.

@@SideShowRobb-sv4vi I just bought the first one. It's great. I also went and bought many of these originals after I saw this a year ago. I got lucky and found a vendor on Discogs who had 15 of them mint in shrink selling them for 10 a piece.
Can someone tell me why Chad makes a whole, long video about records he hardly has any of for sale (anymore)? Did I miss an announcement of an AP Pablo rerelease campaign?

How come the original pressing of "This one for Blanton", sound so much better then Your reissus?
Yep, Pablo's record covers look like they were designed at the last minute, they look like second rate throwaways. Don't judge a book (or record) by its cover! Now I snap up Pablo titles when I see 'em. They are more hit than miss!
Love many Pablo releases, but I avoid the ones that are "Live in Montreaux", the usually sound like a heep of dung! 😁
