Copeland himself said Sting is the least arrogant person he knows. He's shy and self-deprecating, he's very serious about his music. The studio staff had a nickname for Sting (well a second one, that is) : they called him Stink, because he used to jog in the mornings a few miles, then went directly to record without having a shower.

Watching these interviews is such a mindfuck, because The Police had ridiculous chemistry. And yet Sting was at the helm for sure. I always wondered if Sting was really pushing his bandmates aside when taking credit for the vast majority of The Police's work. In a lot of interviews, and from Stewart and Andy themselves, Sting appeared to be a complete jerk and refused to work on songs (sometimes) written by Stewart or Andy. I think that may have been Sting's biggest mistake because the other two were super talented dudes whose songs (On Any Other Day, Omegaman, Miss Gradenko, Behind My Camel) were really impressive. At the same time, these kinds of interviews reveal that, yes, Sting was a songwriting genius and probably was the one "most responsible" for their success. Andy and Stewart brought the songs to life in a way that no other musicians could have. The Police are such a confusing and mysterious band to me and that's why I find them so goddamn interesting, haha.
Super talented players and accompanists, yes, but not pop songwriters. Especially compared to Sting. There was no reason to use the other songs cuz his were so much better so I don't see it as Sting being a jerk

Besides, I find overly humble people to often be _more_ annoying than supremely self confident people. I think a huge part of why some people are turned off by Sting...comes purely down to the fact he's an absurdly lucky guy. I mean, he's uber creative and talented _and_ incredibly wealthy and famous _and_ absurdly good looking. That's kinda the perfect recipe to have people react in a jealous manner. Personally I hugely look up to Sting as a person and especially as an artist. His intermittent cockiness I think was merely the result of him being _self aware_ of his own talent and good fortune. Matt, unfortunately we were not able to hear much of the material written by Andy and Stewart, for that matter. You should check out Andy Summers' memoir "One Train Later". As an example, for the album "Ghost in the Machine", almost all of the songs in the middle were Sting's songs, despite material that was up for consideration from both Andy and Stewart. Andy managed to get "Omegaman" on the album and Miles Copeland wanted it to be the first hit single to be released but Sting adamantly refused. Sting also refused to sing on any of the other tracks presented when they were making the album. Critics considered many songs on Zenyatta and Ghost to be filler (much of that was written by Sting...I personally like a lot of those songs anyway, but it is still interesting to think about). I would have loved to have heard the other 'lost' songs from Andy and Stewart. I don't know if they ended up getting written. Point is, Sting is a super talented songwriter and people can make the argument that he is a better songwriter than Andy and Stewart, but, despite him being the main driver behind the songs of The Police, I think he got caught up in his own ego, ultimately leading to an implosion. Very interesting story.

I'd have to strongly disagree. Invisible Sun, which is mentioned here is unquestionably a better song. Message In A Bottle is a very good song but I'd say The Police have over 15 songs I'd rank higher.

Based on this interview (Jools Holland was the keyboard player in Squeeze) and the recent interview with Rick Beato, Sting just wants to have real discussions about music with musicians. He sometimes doesn't do so well with celebrity interviewers who are only attracted by his stardom.
He's shy and introvert at heart, that much I can tell. Perhaps he need a drink to loosen up? Because I remember an interview after a dinner (following the Polar prize ceremony) where he seemed a bit tipsy and more happy and at ease than usual.
I know Sting wrote the songs, but Andy and Stewart were able to create so much complexity within them that they are endlessly captivating. Such an amazing group of musicians, glad they were able to create together for as long as they did.
The Police are one of the most serendipitously blessed bands of all time. According to Andy’s autobiography, “One Train Later”, he met Stewart completely by chance and joined the band at his own insistence. It was, basically, “You need me in your band. So, I’m coming aboard whether you like it or not.” It’s impossible (for me, at least) to imagine that trademark, Police “sound” without Andy’s open harmonics and weirdly nuanced phrasing. Amazing stuff, really.

Sting here looks totally captivated by technology and how it could fix his ideas and hugely ease the creative process. Those 80's "boxes" may look ridiculous compared to the music gear a producer can get nowadays, but in the right hands they still allowed him to stick together great ideas and create world hits like Message in a Bottle.
I remember when I was a teenager even back in the early 90s, I would have killed to have a 4 track tape recorder. But they were so expensive. All these toys he has in front of him were rock star expensive in the day. Now we can lay down 40 tracks on our iPhone with no problem.

Well, that blows the theory that Andy came up with the sus4 chords for this. I assumed that Sting had basic chords for it, but Andy had Jazzed them up.
sting wrote the outline for about 99 percent of the police songs. His background was jazz so he songs had a jazz sound to them. It was up to stewart and andy to "Police-ifize" the songs and arrangement. I think Andy did come up with every breath you take guitar. it was andy who broke up the chord sequence of the police songs.
Actually 70 or 75%, there are songs written and composed by Stewart Copeland (fall out, no time this time, the other way of stopping, darkness, miss Gradenko) and Andy Summers (behind my camel, omegaman, someone to talk to, mother) and other songs written and composed by 2 or 3 of them like deatwish, written and composed by Sting, Copeland and Summers or Murder by Numbers, lyrics by Sting and music by Andy Summers

I'm not sure I've ever seen Sting so affable. I imagine that Jools is a friend. There is a lot of nose wiping. But perhaps he is just happy to be doing what he's doing... I think this is when he truly began taking over the group, defining what they would become.

The Squier VM Stratocaster '70S MN Model is an excellent version of the Fender classic. It has 4 bolts, but the vintage tint maple neck, black body, and black pick guard is spot on. It has Duncan designed single coil set up and it sounds fantastic! Cover up the Squier logo on the headstock if you must, and have a listen. Damn good guitar.
Federico Lagge true. he did write almost all the songs. however he did not write all the guitar parts IN all the songs (or drum beats) and those are a big part of the band's sound.
Sting is a shapeshifter with accents. Gordie accent here, posh Engish accent later in his solo career. He sang “I CAAN’T Stand Losing You” back in 1978 to appeal to American listeners instead of KHAN’T - which is how an Englishman would pronounce it. He wanted to conquer America and he succeeded.

Sting wrote the guitar parts and Andy just embellished them. A lot of the early songs were written before the Police formed anyway.

Sting actually teaches how to write compose and record songs circa 1981... probably still holds today.
Smokey Robinson has the same approach to the title first and writing around it to avoid getting stuck. I had to learn that one the hard way.

To say the least. I wonder if Sting realizes how unbelievably _lucky_ he is. I mean...he's insanely creative and talented, _and_ absurdly wealthy, _and_ crazy famous, _and_ very intelligent(tested in the top 1% in his class), and if all that weren't enough...he's also annoyingly attractive, with seemingly no expiration date. And he can have 8 hour orgasms(more or less). I realize there's also struggle and pain and hard work...but shit, to say he lucked out in life would be an understatement.

sting wrote the outline for about 99 percent of the police songs. His background was jazz so he songs had a jazz sound to them. It was up to stewart and andy to "Police-ifize" the songs and arrangement. I think Andy did come up with every breath you take guitar. it was andy who broke up the chord sequence of the police songs.
Actually 70 or 75%, there are songs written and composed by Stewart Copeland (fall out, no time this time, the other way of stopping, darkness, miss Gradenko) and Andy Summers (behind my camel, omegaman, someone to talk to, mother) and other songs written and composed by 2 or 3 of them like deatwish, written and composed by Sting, Copeland and Summers or Murder by Numbers, lyrics by Sting and music by Andy Summers

I'm not sure I've ever seen Sting so affable. I imagine that Jools is a friend. There is a lot of nose wiping. But perhaps he is just happy to be doing what he's doing... I think this is when he truly began taking over the group, defining what they would become.
They are friends and Jools was on monserat and a part of the tour they did after in 1981/ 82
His accent is way less affected here. Good luck to him. He eventually shared credits with Andy and Stewart but the big money was already made.

The Squier VM Stratocaster '70S MN Model is an excellent version of the Fender classic. It has 4 bolts, but the vintage tint maple neck, black body, and black pick guard is spot on. It has Duncan designed single coil set up and it sounds fantastic! Cover up the Squier logo on the headstock if you must, and have a listen. Damn good guitar.

Sting is a shapeshifter with accents. Gordie accent here, posh Engish accent later in his solo career. He sang “I CAAN’T Stand Losing You” back in 1978 to appeal to American listeners instead of KHAN’T - which is how an Englishman would pronounce it. He wanted to conquer America and he succeeded.
