We chose the MG trophy long range which was the game changer for us as well as the ability to fit a tow bar (for bicycles) and the useful roof bars. the Power to load is a also useful feature. a good pratical affordable EV with a sensible range. the surround cameras and 360 top view is great. I believe a USB stick can also be fitted to record the cameras as a dashcam?

If you've ever owned and run a Kia it's a no brainer. Stress free motoring, charging infrastructure apart. Grants now gone too make the used market even stronger.

Thank you for this comparison, as always a proper review done right. I love your need to explain yourself (again) to the MG fan club 😉. Being a MG5 LR owner myself, I'm happy that I got it with the government grant (£1.5k) which has since stopped (after this video was published). Taking this change into account the ZS EV now costs £1.5k more than stated. Shame the government is sending out the wrong message for EV adoption, let's see if the redirecting of funds into charging infrastructure makes a big difference in the real world. I'd like to see more than 2 Gridserve per motorway services as people don't want to queue. I agree with all your balanced and constructive reviews, please keep it going - you have a subscriber for life 😇

Purely personally. I'd take the Kia. It's a known quantity with a solid reputation. Residuals a few years down the line are likely to be better too with the eNiro. It's worth mentioning that it is possible to get the MG ZS EV with a dark grey/black coloured grille, which I think looks a little better........ Both cars have inoffensive, easy on the eye styling, which helps their appeal for many.

Good and fair review...but still no mention that the MG has V2L..(not available on the E-Niro only the new Nero EV)..not a big deal for some but to me will be very handy for doing all the lawn mowing/power washing the drive etc (and charging my RC model batteries while down at the field) using the car which has been charged on cheap rate elec on Octopus Go :)
Also full 360 cam on the MG and the full pano roof (as shown in the vid ) is a big plus for me.
Also if going for a 4 year old 4+ spec Niro you will be buying as 2nd owner at best and only getting 3 year remaining warranty instead of the full 7 years with a new MG.
Of course a used Niro would be available immediately instead of a long wait for an MG...or any new EV... (I know new orders are suspended of the LR model till existing orders are fulfilled...not sure on the SR)...I ordered my LR in Dec last year (and sold my Mk1 which I loved as got a great price for it ) ...at the time March was the date of delivery of new one but now it's back to Sept as the current ETA....never mind the exercise must be doing me some good :)

I think that we well may see due to the government stupid net zero agenda (now 2024 and Liebour is in power) power cuts over the coming months. Unfortunately, my solar panels and batteries are turned off for safety reasons if there is a power cut. However, at least I can get power from the car!

Have I heard this right? MG ZS EV - a £30k+ car - and you can't even recline the driver's seat?! It's a great all-rounder, absolutely no doubt. But simple stuff like that really kills it for me. But then I am 6'3 so maybe a bit atypical. Great review.

  • @martinransom4543
    @martinransom4543 2 роки тому +4

Thanks for the review. I would opt for the SR MG as it has a lithium phosphate battery unlike the LR MG and Niro and thus the battery may last 2 to 3 times longer (less battery degregation). The MG also has VtL which may be handy in a power outage.

  • @theonlymerry

It's worth noting that the eNiro is more efficient in terms of miles per kw/h. I've got an MG ZS LR, which has averaged 3.1mls/kwh over 6000 miles (Dec - present) where as a colleague at work has an eNiro 4+ which has achieved more like 3.5-3.7 mls/kWh. We both tend to do mainly motorway miles. With electricity prices the way they are it could factor into people's decision making process. Personally I went with the ZS as at the time it was significantly cheaper than the eNiro as the government grant was still in place and dealers were offering finance contributions, basically it meant I could pick up the Trophy LR for slightly less than the SR is now. It's quite a different proposition now as you rightly point out and I'm not sure I'd make the same decision.

A very late comment, but this only just popped up in my feed.
A very comprehensive review giving justice to both cars; I did spot one omission that no one else has commented on; you discussed the MG steering wheel having rake, but no reach adjustment, but didnt mention the Kia steering wheel adjustments; as someone just shy of 2 metres tall, all the adjustments possible is what I need.
I currently drive a 2016 Soul EV, and I am very impressed with how it drives, and how well the battery and interior is holding up in what is now approaching an 8 year old car; the ONLY downside is the short range; if only Kia had designed the later Soul EV II, so the battery could be retro-fitted; the same as Nissan have done with every generation of the Leaf.
I was very tempted by the first gen MG, I could have bought an ex-demo one with under 1,000 miles on the clock for ~£22K in 2020; but experiences with the company since it became Chinese put me off; it does appear they have learnt their lessons since then, and support and parts for their cars have improved immensely.
Having said that, I cant fault Kia either, my car had a couple of major issues caused by external factors (a bad public charger blew my onboard AC charger module and a mechanic refilled the HVAC with the wrong oil - killing it); and even though the warranty was expiring in mere months when the charger event occurred, the car got repaired under the 7 year warranty (although they did drag their feet for a couple of months).
The charging times shouldnt really be an issue for anyone who sticks to the recommended 20-80 regime, as neither battery should overheat and slow the charging speed; my older Soul has a similar size battery to the smaller Niro, and only charges at 50KW max, but it only takes 15-20 minutes to get to 80+%, often barely enough time for a pee break for the family; by the time you have walked back and forth, across the car park to the services.

I was firmly in the MG camp and ordered a new one. However its starting to become clear that MG have over sold it and now have a huge potentially undeliverable backlog of orders. I've started looking at used as I suspect MG may find a way to cancel or change (put the price up!) my order.

You say that the MG service interval is 2 years, mine I'm told, is annually.
Had my MG ZS LR Trophy Connect EV for 3 years in November. Four issues: 1. Dealer. 2. Steering column knocking. 3. Seat 'leather' cracking. 4. Dealer.
The dealer bumped their service prices up considerably, my first service I was told it would be £65 and a big thing was made about that when I bought it. It turned out to be 3 times that due to a 'price review'. The second service was more than that on my 4x4 turbo petrol car! I'm going to use Cleeveley to service the car going forward.
I had the steering column knocking that many people had and the dealer kept trying to fob me off. Eventually, they 'tightened something up' and that lasted about a day. I don't know what they finally did, but it seems to be fixed now. My friend is having a new steering column fitted for the same issue!
Like many, the side of the seat is beginning to crack, don't know if I can be bothered with the hassle of trying to persuade them to fix it, as they claim it is only covered for a year. But the sale of goods act kicks this into touch.
Otherwise a fabulous car! Very quiet, fast, comfortable, lots of room both in the cabin and the boot and at the moment, I'm getting between 4 and 4.3 mile/kW so really cheap to run. I fitted a 'frunk' which holds a charging cable, spare windscreen fluid etc.
Yes very happy with my MG!

Looks like the back of the driver’s seat on the ZS does adjust for rake, as any driver’s seat should. There is a button arrangement on the right hand side of the squab, like on the VW Tiguan. Page 110 of the online manual illustrates it.

Hi Guys like the video very much, just one observation I would make. I bought my Gen 1 car last sept (2021)brand new and after various French govt and dealer gifts it ended up costing me 15,500€ yes, that's about £13,025 !!!!
Look the car, she gets better and better. Last night I had her on charge overnight and this morning she showed 350 kms (approx 219 miles) with drive mode "Eco", kers 3 and hvac off.

This is a great comparison, very useful for deciding what to buy. However, there is a mistake as he says he is reviewing the MG trophy but then also says it is not the highest trim. I have the MG ZS Ev Essence, which is the middle of the range, with the 51kw battery and it does not have connectivity in the back, or an arm rest in the back, it is in the long range model that has those extras.

When I test drove the MG in August last year before deciding to purchase the Niro I found that with the sunroof shut but the internal roof panel slid back the road noise in the cabin was quite loud. The two other factors that put me off the MG were the ride, which I felt was less luxurious than the Kia and the location of the instruments which seemed far less intuitive than the Kia. Even with a $35000NZ (£17k) price difference on new vehicles I felt that the Kia was the vehicle to choose, (mind you Kia were willing to offer considerably more on the Ioniq that we were trading in than MG which reduced the difference somewhat).

Would always buy the ZS EV again, but rather new so I get all the government incentives 😉😎😊
Wouldn't want to ever have a show-off car and really like the design better than most other electric cars 😎😎😊😊

I'm sorry but I still can't understand why a professional car journalist can have body language which justice dishes the car in question MG ZS EV , I have watched every carveiw you have produced ,when you review a car that is above 45 thousand pounds it's like listening to and watching a different person , I hope you and your team don't find this offensive as I find your channel excellent.
Your knowledge of cars is unbelievable, you will remember when VAG took over skoda, you will remember what their cars looked like not very interesting, but with the help of bigger companies they grew and grew into one of the best brands in the world.
MG will grow into an amazing company without the help of VAG that's my opinion.
Oh I think you missed out a very important factor with the MG ZS EV SR is that the battery is LFP and has different running features!

Hello Neil. First of all, thank you for watching and taking the time to send a comment in. Every view, and every comment is thoroughly appreciated. I'm sorry if you feel that I adopt a different persona when reviewing different cars, I personally don't think I do, well at least try not to. In terms of the car's cost, this isn't a factor to me, and my enthusiasm for something like the MINI Electric, Fiat 500 and Honda e (not to mention the excellent Skoda Citigo eiV I reviewed a couple of years ago) is far greater than for the liek of Audi's e-tron which I find tediously inadequate, I think comes across.
Taking MG as a starting base, I already think they are an excellent car company, and the ZS is proof of that. No, it isn't an excitng car to look at, nor is it particularly exciting to drive, but what it is is a car that does the job it was designed to do very well. The MG 5 is another point in case, and with the facelift that is about to arrive, it is starting to address the styling issues that I said that it had in previous guise. The new MG 4 hatch looks amazing, and as an ex MG owner (and salesman), I am very much looking forward to their new EV sportscar.
So, again, if I have come across in a different way, you have my word it has nothing to do with how expensive or not a car is. I review every car on the basis of what it is designed to do, and whether or not it meets that criteria (hence my criticism of the Tesla Model Y).
Thank you again for watching, taking the time to comment, and I hope you continue to enjoy AutoEV.
      Bryan

If MG weren’t such a disaster for delivery, I’d choose the MG ZS new in a heartbeat, I actually prefer the Kia E. Soul to drive than the Niro but the E Soul is just so ugly

AUTO Ev must have a sponsorship deal with MG as they delete my comments on the problems with modern MGs and rust

@interceptor1986 no-one has deleted any of your comments! We don't delete anyones comments unless they are offensive, and stating a fact that like you have isn't offensive. And no, we don't have any sponsorship deal with MG, or anyone else for that matter. We are independent and self-funded......its why we don't have any money.

This video is pointless. You are comparing two NEW cars. either source an old Kia, or do not do the comparison video. giving verbal caveats, does not do it.

Thank you for the comment. We made the decision a little while back to concentrate on longer videos that are more comprehensive than some of the others that don’t cover the details we do. We know that will put some people off (as you have indicated, and that’s fine) but for prospective buyers, we want to cover as much detail as we can. Our core audience does seem to be the people who are looking to buy and they want this level of detail. Yes, it loses us some views, but that’s fine as being this detailed is what makes AutoEV that little bit different to the rest.
And in fairness, there are chapters so you can skip the bits you don’t like……(unless the bit you don’t like is me, then you’re a bit stuck!)
Thanks again for your comment. They are all appreciated.
