One thing that I absolutely love about Band-Maid that is seldom mentioned but just how perfect every bridge is in their songs. Great solos are easy to recognize and there are good songs out there with a good hook or a good riff and the entire song just kinda hangs on that aspect for 3-4 minutes and then kill time with a bridge just to pause between the hook or the riff. By comparison, Band-Maid makes the bridge a vital, exciting and strong part of the song with hooks and riffs often worthy of a song itself. In this song the bridge is nothing too flashy, but for a pop-punk song it is about perfect. It’s bright and sunny and keeps momentum but manages to ramp up, teases the listener and makes the chorus even more exciting than than the first two even though you’ve already heard it twice. That’s excellent songwriting.
I’m going to recommend you double up on Dice… do the video from Lalapalooza this year where they play “Dice” and immediately go into the next song called “Hate?”. You’ll see a great live performance of this song and then a ripping performance of one of their newest songs, complete with an awesome bass/lead guitar trade-off interlude. “Hate” performed the way they’re doing it on the current tour, is perhaps the best example of how great they are live.
it was live streamed by HULU and one of the best songs was DICE/HATE! ua-cam.com/video/a6gvg9Xg4Ao/v-deo.html it was fire. Just to get an idea of how they have leveled up.
This song is a call to arms. In Japan they have a sub-culture of shut-ins, people who are either unemployed or under employed who basically won't move out on their own. They stay in their parent/grandparent's home basically playing with dolls or video games, instead of getting out and living life and trying to better themselves. This song is calling them out. Challenging them, "Are you gonna stay in there playing with DOLLLLLLLLLS like a little kid? Or are you going to stand up take off the blindfold, leave the dolls and games behind and step out into the real world?" At the end of the video, the girl puts down the doll, takes off the blindfold and steps into the light. It's called Hikikomori in Japan and is defined as: "pulling inward, being confined", also known as severe social withdrawal, is total withdrawal from society and seeking extreme degrees of social isolation and confinement. Hikikomori refers to both the phenomenon in general and the recluses themselves. The concept is primarily recognized only in Japan, although similar concepts exist in other languages and cultures. Hikikomori have been described as loners or "modern-day hermits". Estimates suggest that half a million Japanese youths have become social recluses, as well as more than half a million middle-aged individuals. - Definition from Wikipedia
I first saw Band-Maid in summer of 2017, 'Thrill', Facebook link. Then I checked out 'Real Existance' and thought "Oh... a band to look out for". Early 2018 I saw this MV that they dropped. And I was in! Been a fan ever since. Favorites: Daydreaming (by a long shot, it has a very special place for me) Domination Live (the energy!) Freedom Live (the smiles!) Blooming (song writing masterpiece) Corallium (another masterpiece. See the live if you can!)
My favorite Band-Maid song is "Play", so many ear-candy moments including creative drumming. The Official Live has a great extended intro. All the new music and new performances have pushed it down the reaction list, maybe you can change that. Thanks for the reaction! 👏👏👏👏👏
I second that! Saw Band Maid live in Salt Lake City a couple months ago. I had the privilege of being 8 feet away from Kanami in the front row all concert. One of the best concerts I’ve been to in a long time!
If you like Dice, you'll like over 100 other Band-Maid hit songs, too! Think about that -- over 100 awesome songs to hear! What a great prospect to have in front of you! 🤘😛🤘 Thx, Joely!
Band-Maid is music for musicians! They of course nail that mass-appeal pop aspect as well, but for people like us with a little more musical training there's so many layers and cool touches to uncover. Cheers from a fellow percussionist from across the pond! 🇺🇲
Every law enforcement agency on earth dreams of being able to catch people like a B-M chorus . Yep B-M in your life, how good is that, nuff said. Viva the Maids Po 👍🎼🥁🎸🎤🍻
Favorite part for me is at 2:06 when Saiki points back and Kanami hits the slide at the end of the first chorus. But honestly the whole song is absolutely amazing. Dice was their 2nd song i heard and made me go "Holy f#@k they are good." My list of their favorites is long, but Daydreaming, Shambles, From Now On, Onset, Unleash, Non-fiction Days, and Real Existence is a start. Oh yeah, Moritorium, Hate, Rock in Me, etc...
Recommendation based on the drumming: Freedom (Live) - drum solo Warning! (MV) - fast and aggressive, with a wicked 16th note roll mid-song Rinne or Black Hole - speed! Heavy! From Now On - instrumental greatness
Another Band-Maid reaction and I hear the words "I'm so happy that Band-Maid are in my life!" so thought "another Maidiac joins the clan". Thought I'd best subscribe so I don't miss the next 100+ of their songs you react to. Did you have the subtitles on for this? They explain a lot of what the song is about though the lyrics can be easily misconstrued, especially lines like "Do you prefer the candy or the whip?", which refers to the sweet and sour sides of relationships. Probably.
Favorite part of this song is that savage MISA bass tone solo - handoff to the Riff Goddess for the melodic solo leaving you wanting more. Favorite song? My playlist is fluid; this one is sometimes #1, but always top 5. “From Now On” is special to me, so it’s #1 most often. Favorite ballad “About Us,” chill bumps and tears Favorite song at max volume? “Moratorium”
My first Band-Maid song and still one of my top favorite songs. Not just of Band-Maid songs. I mean top ever. TBH, like 5 of my top 10 ever songs are Band-Maid though lol.
My favourites (there can't be just one) are: "Freedom" is the best live performance, "Play" Live (the old video) has my favourite beginning (Misa Misa Misa), "Influencer" has my favourite ending (starting from Saikis and Mikus RAP part) and chorus (Hunky Dory Day) "Manners" is my favourite blues/rock song, "About us" is my favourite ballad, "Rinne" is my favourite hard rock song, "Choose me" is my favourite catchy song, Sorry: No favourite instrumental: they are equally good, "Pogo" is my favourite Clubbo song...or "Peace&Love" or "With You"? Well but "Time" is my favourite Miku-song and "Sayonakidori" is my favourite acoustic song 😅 But to be honest: This list often changes with each song I listen to 😅😅😅
Just goin through all of your reactions to these guys and just picked up your point about the difference between the first and second verse ... 'YOLO" is another perfect example of the first and second verse. Oh and, of course, another brilliant song to boot. One after another Joely and the last AND the next will be your favourite haha.
A rare treat here seeing Miku's gorgeous Mother of Pearl Zemaitis guitar.....and ALWAYS enjoy MISA's Black Cloud bass. Personally I LOVE their videos, they're all masterpieces....especially "Manners", tops on my list.
Dude, I only found your page just the other week from a Drumeo reaction...and now this! WOW! Like you said, the musicality! Just Epic. Woulda never been exposed to it without your videos, Liked and Subscribed!!! Thanks for your efforts and great vids, Cheers
The first time I saw the "Dice" video, I was a bit creeped out by the blindfolded girl. But after looking at the translated lyrics I realized that the song was about risks in relationships, whether interpersonal or in business. It's about the give and take of the relationship: who is acountable to whom? Who takes responsibility. Who takes control or cedes it? At the end you realize there's nothing tying the girl down to the chair but her reticence to take the initiative and strike out on her own. She then removes the blindfold and take that first step. This parallels Band-Maid's story. It took Miku and the band a while to realize that their management did not always make the right decisions and to step away and navigate their own course.
Dice was my introduction to Band-Maid and i loved it ! But "Domination" Official Live turned me into a Maidiac =) Neither song was in my top 10 until your reaction ! Now Dice is number ten again! Thanks Joely
@@joelyjamz Yes...oh yes. Paddy is right, ' Puzzle ' ( acoustic ) is another dimension... ' Sayonakidori ' ( acoustic and sung by Miku, not Saiki ) Anemone ' ( acoustic sung by Saiki and Kanami ) too, ' Smile ' ( acoustic with the whole band ) too and etcetera, etcetera, etcetera... or ' Youth ' ( live COVID concert / No audience ) ( with Miku and Saiki singing diferent lines the whole song in a happy caos but controlled by Akane ( drummer ) forcing them to 'join' the song just changing the drum pattern )....amazing
BAND MAID has been in my life since june of 2016 when the recommendation popped up on youtube for their 2nd mv 'real existence'. i was skeptical at first thinking it was an idol band with squeaky voiced singers and no real musicians. could NOT have been more wrong and was instantly blown away. so glad i did not pass it up. dice is still my all time favorite but with well over 100 songs it's a crap shoot. ' real existence' , 'the non fiction days' and 'alone' are 3 of their best earlier mv's that you will not want to miss. and i must recommend that you check out another all female japanese metal band called LOVEBITES. also since 2016 and they will absolutely floor you. start with their live song 'holy war' live from zepp diver city tokyo in 2020 and you will find the 2 guitarists are the best duo in at least the last 20 years in any genre of music. hope to see much more from these 2 incredible bands soon !
It's a classic Kanami composition. The end riff must be the same as the opening riff. The second verse must have variation to keep the listener interested and the chorus must be melodic. Even their heavier songs like 'Rinne' have a foot tapping chorus. Something not in this track but many others that Kanami likes to incorporate is the beginning note and end note of her guitar solo matches the notes sung by Saiki so that you seamlessly transition into and out of the solo. Kanami is a genius.
If you're a drummer, I recommend From Now On for songs with intense drumming. All BAND-MAID instrumental songs are impressive. The other is the Manners/Black Hole combo. These two songs are groovy and have high speed drumming. There are many other songs with impressive drumming. You have to listen to Freedom Live first. Once AKANE raises her stick high, it's time to start.
Favorite BAND-MAID song? Just to many to pick a fave. It's usually that last one you've heard. But I'll narrow it down to one OMV and one Official LIVE video. You have to do 'Unleashed'. It's in Anime format. For the LIVE I would pick 'Domination' LIVE, or even 'Real Existence; LIVE. However, since you're a drummer, it has to be 'Freedom' LIVE. It has Akane's one & only full drum solo. Do it! Do it now. Because I can't wait for more either. I want to see what you'll pick next!
Great reaction again, the mad thing about BM is,there isnt one bad song in their back catalogue, that is epic songwriting skills, even album tracks have so many golden nuggets, and yes im so glad i found this band,
I know you have a lot of requests, but they're mostly hard rock songs, aren't they? I suggest you listen to Anemone and About Us which will bring tears to your eyes. They both have wonderful bass lines.
I actually prefer the instrumental version of this song (the video's on their Instrumental Maid channel). Even though I'm a Saiki fan, the music in this is just that damn epic.

“Candy or the whip” is the Japanese idiom equivalent to the Western “carrot and stick”
