I am painting sunflowers in watercolour today, loose and joyful.
Recently the sunflowers I have been painting have been in jugs and vases so today I wanted to paint them in a garden. I’m not sure I love them in a garden to be honest because those leaves get rather scraggly as the sunflowers ages - but that is just one more thing that makes sunflowers a delightful subject for loose watercolour.
I’m going to paint three I think. A couple that will give me a chance to paint their happy dark centred faces and one in perhaps my favourite sunflower pose. Leaning over so that we can see those intricate leafy bits where the flower connects to the stem. Ah, yes - you can tell I’m a botanist with technical terms like that…
I’m also going to paint a paned window because I find those really fun to paint.

Hi Kerrie! Your sunflowers watercolor is gorgeous. I love that too when the sunflower is leaning down and we can see where the head attaches to the stem. That scruffy edge is so evocative. Your loose and painterly style is perfect. Hugs to you Kerrie!
