I'm portuguese and in my history classes I have never heard about this operation. Such a shame. This was a really compelling story and needs to be more known.
Eu lembro-me de ver este nome numa das últimas páginas de um livro de história, na secção de "curiosidades". Pensei genuinamente que era um antepassado meu. Anos depois pesquisei e só mesmo se por um desvio de nacionais na árvore genealógica.
In times where literally everything interesting has been made into seventeen different UA-cam videos, you actually manage to find super interesting, barely known stories!! And all in amazing quality. Well done my dude
To be fair, London does have a habit of appointing Mayors who are incompetent, negligent, corrupt, and helped ruin a country, at least Waterlow had the common courtesy to ruin someone else's country. Great video as always, no idea how you manage to produce such well researched, well edited videos so quickly. Keep up the good work!
I actually work at the place that printed that money, Zetland House in London. It's no longer a printing company, it's now full of startups, but the building is amazing and brimming with history - - and vaults, which were converted into meeting rooms.
God damn dude, your channel rocks. I'd never heard about this before, super interesting stuff. I'm sharing your channel with everyone I can think of, I'm hoping your stuff takes off here soon. It just blows my mind you only have a little over a thousand subs, it's a God damn injustice and we all know it.
I'm Portuguese and this incredible mate. I had no idea about it. (How is this possible?). But it's not shocking at all. Corruption comes deep from within I see now (See José Sócrates, that would give you another incredible story). PS: Subbed at 1.41K, wish you the best of luck for the future of your channel.
This is so bold it's actually really impressive. I would love to see some of these forged documents by Artur, they must be impeccable to convince so many people of their legitimacy! Great video as always, keep it up :)
Friggin amazingly put together! Would love to know more about what he got up to in Angola and how the railway stint went down before the 1st prison stay
You are giving me Oversimplified vibes but with obscure topics. I like it! Keep it up man, and how about you tell us the story on how the first modern toasters in honor of your name. lol
The text that flashes a 14:27 The explanation for why Waterlow and Sons just printed the same serial numbers without inquiring further is that they where under the impression that the money would go to Angola, The local AKA bank of Angola would have then printed the word Angola onto the money,. Since the banknotes would then be clearly distinguishable form regular 500 escudo notes that are already in circulation, they would not have needed a different serial number. This would basically have bee standard practice as far as I understood
That was common practice in the early 1900's regarding the colonies. Many times they would just use the same notes from the mainland or from other colonies and then just stamp them with the name of the colony they were going to be used in.
dam is your channel good :0 i didnt wanna watch the video before but i just decided to watch it cuz it kept poping up in my reccomendaiton and mmmm this is some good quality stuff :D and only 2K SUBS?? i legit thought u woulda had like 500k subs ..
14:25 funny, I would have thought it was because 2 different companies where printing the same numbered bills neither knowing another company was also printing those numbers
The authorities who detected it should have dealt with it quietly. This has happened in other jurisdictions. They were smart to hush it up and deal with it quietly.
The ironic thing is I live within a few thousand feet of Sand plants which LITERALLY sells sand to the desert. The sand there is worn and can not be used and the middle east and egypt are some of the biggest buyers as they use it to make cement and concretes.
Why did the central bank even uncover it knowing it would have such big ramifications for the economy? Shutting them down must have destroyed so many investments.
i don't understand why they couldn't keep the counterfeited money in circulation and just make those profiting from BAM to pay all their money to the central bank
You didn't explain many things. Like why printing Angola money could be spent in Spain, economic repercussions of spending this money in Spain (Hyperinflation). It could be more throughout.
I'm portuguese and in my history classes I have never heard about this operation. Such a shame. This was a really compelling story and needs to be more known.
Agree!!
Now I know why my mother doesn't trust banks, lol.

It's amazing, I watch so many explainer-style channels but Toast has so many stories I've never heard and tells them some damn well
These videos are ridiculously well-edited. May the algorithm gods raise you up
I very much hope so Oatmeal, and thank you very much!

Very nice, especially the blooper at the end
Portuguese here. It's the first time I see this story presented in a way I actually understand. Thanks 😅
How is this channel just over 12k subs? This deserves at least ten times more subs and views.
This is a hilarious madcap story with the most tragic consequences. I found this on Reddit, and I am subscribbed.
like your sense of humor and writing. keep it up my good man

Thank you for the suggestion, I wrote it down! And also thank you and welcome aboard, Motta!
A RTP fez um série com 50 episódios estreada em 2001 sobre o assunto.

Also haha yeah my origin story! I'll do that at some point in the future

Great job -- finally a story that I haven’t heard 100 times

You really deserve a lot more subscribers than you have, with this kind of talent ❤
Thank you so much Sebin! That's very kind of you to say! We'll see what the future has in stock for toast :D
14:25 funny, I would have thought it was because 2 different companies where printing the same numbered bills neither knowing another company was also printing those numbers
Hi how is toast! I was wondering what was the name of the background music used in this video? A reply would be very nice.
Many may have already told you this but you’ll blow up on UA-cam for sure. Such good quality and something that isn’t known even in Portugal!
Thank you, Miguel!
This Oceans eleven intro was YT Gold
At the start I thought he's what "money heist is based on
Amazing video sir, have a well-earned sub from me. Hope to see you in the big boys club with 1m subs by the end of 2022.
I wrote this prediction down, let's see how well it holds up. If it does I'll buy you a beverage of your choice, sir!
How the fuck do you not have more subscribers? Your content / production is 10/10.
Why the hell has this not been turned into a movie already because this is pretty much Money Heist without the Dali masks and the guns

Lovely
Damn. What a dude. What a racket.
oceans 11 beginning nice
Awesome
that south park reference though
It reminds me of "money heist"
it's a parody of Ocean's Eleven :)
These guys couldn't hold a candle to Ivar Kreugar.
Sam onella challenger approaches. Uses german accent. Its somewhat effective.
Conclusion: Invent time travel and redo what Artur couldn’t - buy the bank who scammed in the first place
pretty good.
Hello, we do not have a Spanish accent while speaking English. Best Regards.
Are you a team making these videos?
Nope just me
@@howistoast that's mad! well done
Staggeringly interesting. Why aren't you a history teacher?
Unfortunately, it never even occurred to me that I really like history until after I decided to study something else :D
@@howistoast Oddly, I had the same experience. Only after studying the Bible did I become interested in history.
Eh? You gained 1k subs in only a few days.
