Funny thing, I worked on a tree nursery in the Eastern part of the Netherlands for a while, and was often sent out with a colleague who went metal detecting during our coffee breaks in the field. And one day he turns up- with one of these crosses from this campaign. It was in near-perfect condition, it had only lost the ring on top of the cross. But was otherwise, in perfectly readable state. So it seems one of the local volunteers from here must've lost it en-route home.

I've found one on an excavation on the outskirts of Zwolle and I know lots of people who've found them too.
Apparantly quite huge numbers of these were made and lots of them ended up being thrown away. This might have something to do with the amount of civilians who fought because I assume military personel takes better care of their medals.

As a Belgian, this was a fun story to follow. History classes always tend to focus on the victories of the country and rarely on the defeats. So the Tiendaagse veldtocht was a footnote in our lessons at best.
Considering you've now done a three-parter on the history of Belgium, will you do an extra episode on Neutral Moresnet as well, maybe as an appendix? It IS part of Belgium's history after all, even if it was an independent micronation for nearly a century.

1854 is definitely not the time of Leopold III. Leopold III's reign was rather short. It started a few years before WWII, in 1934, and he was deposed after WWII.
1854 still fell under Leopold I's reign. He has a pretty long period apparently.
And Leopold I did nothing in Congo. It was his son, Leopold II who started that. Leopold III didn't do a lot in Congo either, but that was mainly due to lack of time to do something in Congo (he was pretty occupied with the entire WWII thing).

Well, once upon a time there was a mighty but money spending Duke. To get money for his hobbies he sold all his waste lands in an area to one of his knights, the Lord of Breda. He kept all developed lands because they brought in taxes, which is good money. After a few centuries the title of this Duke ended up with Philips II of Habsburg and the Lord of Breda was his arch enemy William I of Orange. At the peace of Westphalia their successors gave back their personal possessions to seal the peace. The Duke's properties are called Baarle-Hertog (Duke) and the Lord's properties Baarle-Nassau (family name of Orange-Nassau).
The inhabitants do not want any resolvement of the situation because they largely benefit from tourism, smuggling, financial tricks, fireworks, and a lot of other things that are obscured by complex borders.

Apart from this being the most Belgian thing ever, it seems to be there solely so you can reconsider "leaving your folk" to cross over to the other side, or conveniently turn around... and I've heard from multiple Belgians it's not an outlier either. This is within one country. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Yeah infrastructure would be a thing to be reckoned with indeed...

It's an interesting historical coincidence that on the day after the last Dutch troops left Belgium on August 20, on the other side of the Atlantic, Nat Turner's rebellion broke out in Southampton County, Virginia. One of the most famous slave rebellions in US history, it saw Nat Turner liberate and unite hundreds of enslaved people in the area, and butcher many of the white slaveowners and their families. Sadly, it lasted only three days, August 21 to the 23, before being brutally crushed by local white volunteer militias and civilians and US sailors from a nearby port. It was the last major slave rebellion in the US before John Brown's rebellion in 1859, shortly before the outbreak of the American Civil War which resulted in the abolition of slavery in the US.

Holland didn't want Flanders... They wanted Brabant and Limburg.
And it would have lost all of them, had Holland continued it's battle.
It marched on Brussel and Maastricht, not on Gent and Brugge.
Serious voices threatened to join the revolution if the aggression would not stop.
The price Holland had to pay for the restoration of the border of 1648, was full equality and restoration of the Catholic Church at first in the Dutch areas of Brabant and Limburg, and from 1848 for the entire country.

Politics at that time was not drawn along the same lines of Flemish vs Walloon as today. The rebels were an unlikely alliance of Catholic conservatives who wanted to reinstate the dominance of church institutions and Liberals who wanted press and liberal democratic freedoms (the Netherlands was not a parliamentary democracy until 1848).
Among some there was also the idea that flemish would be recognised as a language instead of as the series of regional linguistic errors it was seen as from the North.

reuniting would be fun for politics, the heage + brussels. funny combo plus the entire gate of europe controlled by a joined nation would have alot of influence and be realy rich to maybe be the second economy of europe or third afther france if we count the entire benelux as a country.
we would stil be smal but stil the second largest food exporter in the world and one of the most schipping nations in general and surtenly in europe.

the benelux also has more than half of france it's gdp 1.3 bilion euro's and to france's 2.3 bilion euro's.
while population whise the benelux would have 29.3 milion and france 67,4 witch is more than dubble.
in witch sence we would do verry wel populationwhise.
the benelux would surpass russia in gdp.
the benelux would be the seventh largest in population afther poland with 37 to 38 milion pepole
in gdp it would be 5th in europe counting the uk as second afther germany followed up by france and italy and then the benelux with a 0.3 bilion difrence.
and yes i just looked all of this up because it got me thinking.
and wel for our size being fifth largest economy and the 7th in population in europe excluding ownly russia.
with 23 place with around 73.500 km2 it would be smaller than serbia but bigger than ireland.
i mean if you think about that than this aind to bad.
and yes my first assumptions were wrong itally is not that poor but still. this smal piece of land is worth a ton of monney.
and the most dense wealth in gdp and population per km2 in europe.

    5:27 “The State Milia”?
Milia is a skin condition, rare in adults, unless you’ve had a rash, injury or sun exposure where dead cells have been caught under newly formed skin.
It’s common in newborns, where tiny white bumps appear across a baby's nose, chin or cheeks. In either case no treatment is needed because they usually disappear on their own in a few weeks or months.
Not as short as the ten days The Netherlands had to clear this whole Belgium thing up but hey ho, zo is het leven!

I notice the ideas presented and confronted falling across the offensive-defensive divide. The particulars of the Maldon stream-bank yielding as you refocused upon later are significant, in reinforcing that if the defense sets the battle strategy to pro-anti a shield-wall, even when re-adjusting their position in the moment, that this is a thing of battles of the times, rather than a tactic of choice. That may be the best divide between your positions. I seem to vaguely remember Chronicles references, sentence-short only perhaps, to Viking attacks in East Anglia or Humber-mouth, and those would not be defense-defining battle tactics. (That is how to attack, while defense would still be able to define the approaches and/or targets.) An observation, anyway. Cheers!

    • @FragLord
      @FragLord 2 роки тому

I doubt there were any war or annexation plans. Belgium just came out of WW1 battered as shit and the allies didn't give it enough money to rebuild. A part of this is the Belgian king's own fault, he being too focused on territorial gains as compensation, instead of reparations to rebuild the nation and infrastructure. If they made T-Shirts at the time they would've made this. I went to war with Germany and all i got is this louzy tiny piece of German land nobody lives in...
The Belgian king was so out of touch that one of his demands to his allies was for them to give them a piece of the Netherlands as a form of reparation. This idea was totally insane, because he asked a piece of land of a country that wasn't involved in the war. The Netherlands were neutral throughout the entirety of WW1.
I'm a Belgian, born and partially raised in the Netherlands. I even worked every summer in the Netherlands. I have only love for both nations.
But the division of the Netherlands is a historic mistake imo. At least it would've made more sense to let the French talking Belgians to go to France and the Dutch talking Belgians to go to the Netherlands. But I believe not many of the great powers would've wanted to add more French territory on the continent, just 20 years after Nap Nap.
The Belgian revolution was more a counter-revolution. The region turned from officially Dutch to only French overnight. This while Dutch is even the majority language in Belgium today. And that after more than 100 years of Dutch not being an official language, no Dutch education or higher education. All official forms, papers and politics were conducted only in French. The Dutch talking people, the Flemish people, were second class citizens for the majority of Belgium's existence. Those events even lasted up until the 60's when students rose up in mass protests, demanding for Dutch courses in cities like Brussels, Gent and Leuven. Which is crazy when you think about it, because Leuven and Gent are 100% Dutch talking cities. Only after World War 2 did Belgium recognize the majority language, the Dutch language. To my estimation if 60% of the Belgians are native Dutch speakers, so at least 70% of the nation was a native Dutch speaker when they founded the Belgian nation. A nation that didn't recognize the language of 70% of it's own population. Hard to call it a revolution eh...
Brussels was a 70% native Dutch speaking city and the capital of the United Netherlands. Now only 10-20% of the populations speaks Dutch. And even though it's officially bilingual. You will have to look hard to find bilingual officials in the Brussels region and government. Most of the mayors and ministers in Brussels, in fact almost all of them, speak no Dutch. The father of our national hero and superstar Vincent Kompany is the mayor of Ganshoren. He can't even say hello in Dutch...
