Knuckle Puck's guitar team of Kevin Maida and Nick Casasanto started playing just like everyone else did. From being introduced to the instrument by a family member to learning all the Green Day and blink-182 riffs they could handle, their history is pretty normal. But it's what the duo have done with Knuckle Puck that makes them awesome. Judging from KP's impending new album 20/20, and the enthusiasm these two have about their craft, these guys are lifers. They filmed this episode of APTV's Six-String Stories back in the days when a band could tour without facial coverings.
Maida and Casasanto trade stories and shop talk like they're the only people in the room. The repartee feels less like a Knuckle Puck interview and more like a quality hang with friends. They reveal their first experiences with the instrument and discuss each other's purported "bad habits." Maida reveals why the front of his guitar is so badly scratched up. Casasanto plays part of a song that was his gateway to emo.

While the conversation is really great, the guitarists give us a preview of something they've been working on for a while. The self-described "tone guys" reveal a prototype guitar overdrive unit they were using during the last Knuckle Puck tour. Guitarists can dial in a specified tone with the unit, offering a number of potential sonic modifications. The unit, the 20/20 Overdrive, is now available for players right here.
At first, when Maida and Casasanto came in with the mysterious "black box," we didn't know what to expect. It wasn't exactly the nuclear football to America's launch codes. But we were honored to get an up-close look of the unit in action. Of course, you can hear tones both driving and luscious on 20/20 the pedal and 20/20 the album. So even if you're not a guitarist, you're still getting a treat. Mark your calendar for 20/20's release Sept 17.

im getting better at it but i need to get used to using my pinky alot more. my fretting is also really sloppy.
Cleaning up my picking technique. And avoiding sweep picking and alternate picking.
I strictly only play extended range guitars at this point. Only six string I own is an acoustic. Want my 7 string story...?
Instrumentally, Knuckle Puck is for sure the best pop-punk band in the game. They're all super talented and pretty technical for a pop-punk band and have such a unique tone.
I would argue them and tssf for sure
Knuckle Puck is my #1 favorite band, but this comment is sooooo wrong lol they are all very basic in every instrument. Where they shine is their energy shown through their emotions in their songs and the songwriting itself
@@zach.is.young96 some of their song aren't in standard tuning...and not only using the standard power chord. They oftenly used different voicing like maj7th or maj3rd and etc (my ear can't figure it all..😕). I think there is a song by them on a open tuning...for a pop punk band pretty sure that was pretty technical, at least for me.
They're really good, but instrumentally or with vox, TSSF is way beyond them
Calling Knuckle Puck instrumentally “basic” is profoundly ignorant.
I like the honestly of these guys about playing guitar.
Honestly I like the honesty of how honest they're being about playing guitar
Kanookla Pook is a super honest band with great senses of humor.
Knuckle puck hella riffs
What I wouldn't give to have a beer with these dudes and just learn about their writing process
man, you said it.
These dudes wrote the most emotional riff ever. The "Conduit"
Have you heard “It’s Too Much” by Moose Blood? That’d be my pick.
@@mattfury. still Conduit for me
Don't even get me started with the song Wait dude, literally one of the best and most emotionally fucking songs ever 😭
@@nocaptainmatt3771 I change my mind. Giving Up by Silverstein is STILL the most emotional riff ever written, then Conduit. The lyrics from Wait also hits way close to home. "You always did feel just like home, bt you were always so unreachable."
I bought one of those 20/20 overdrives. I know there aren’t many out there, but if you ever get a chance to play one or buy one I highly recommend it. Most OD pedals are classified as “low gain”, “medium gain,” or “high gain,” but this one is more than capable of doing all three. But it really shines at those gritty pop punk tones!
I love how their just friends above all else you can tell by how they talk to each other.
Kevin is so reserved on stage that it was unexpected to see him be so talkative
they sound so comforting explaining things
I would buy the shit out of a Kp overdrive take my money
it's out! sold out though, only 50 of em.
Pre orders are open now for re release in 2021!
@@nocaptainmatt3771 Where?
i know nothing about guitars but i love listening to these guys talk about them
Well hello... Looking good guys. Can't wait for the new album!!!!!!
Honestly 2 of my favorite guitarists
They’re always such a beautiful set of guitars from KP
This is a great video that makes me feel so old
Absolutely amazing band. Lovely guys and their music is excellent!
I used to ride bikes around the neighborhood with Nick and my cousin. We would literally swim in his pool every weekend. Glad he’s doing good for himself!
thank you for subtitles...!!
that's some beautiful bromance these guys got going. awesome.
I look up to these guys so much. I’m from Chicago KP 4 Eva
Loved this. These guys are great.
I played that anthem part 2 riff the exact same way with 2 fingers until my guitar teacher was like you gotta play it with 3 fingers and then I was like alright but I still prefer to use 2 fingers for the same reasons that kevin said!!! hahahaha!!!!!!
Dude KP has totally stayed true to their sound and I love that about them like other bands they came up with changed completely but KP stayed so real and true. And just matured in such a better way
That’s exactly what I dislike in bands. All their albums sound the same haha. Don’t get me wrong I love them but I prefer bands to experiment more
@@brandonblacc_ idk with knuckle puck I'm glad they haven't changed drastically
Love these guys so much
I love those guitars. That low end SG has been beat up. I love when things look unique.
That's the exact way I learned (and still play) that Blink riff 😂
11:45 That tone omg 🥺😩😭 I really wanna watch them in real live. Really hope they could do tour to Kuala Lumpur one day.
"That lead is so cool." Insanity.
Love these guys
I need that Jazzmaster
sg is way sicker tho
i relate to almost everything they said about learning guitar lol
Love KP so much!
Legit, I'm practicing Anthem pt 2 by blink 182 right now and I'm doing exactly what he said he did with just 2 fingers. Now im contemplating using three fingers since it looks so much easier.
Eventually you're gonna have to use all fingers , so why not today
their chord playing is awesome
4:08 totally can relate with Kevin.
Love these dudes so much more hearing how much they like green day.
I would buy that pedal in a second , release it please !
KANOOKLAH-POOK
I’ve found you.
Coolest dudes ever
Would love a Knuckle Puck overdrive pedal, yes!
Have one and it's super worth it, such a great pedal!
I would totally buy their pedal
Their overdrive is the best sounding od pedal I've heard.
What fender offset model is that guitar?
That’s cool that nick has howie day as an influence
20/20 is one of the best pop punk album for me
Brain Stew was my first song too!
Hahaha I played Anthem pt2 exactly like that
Both times they've released that damn pedal, I've tried to buy it and it sell so damn fast
i feel you man. sigh
That overdrive was iffy at first but they managed to pull a real good sound out of it
I think it was mostly the amp tbh
Anyone know when the signature pedals are shipping
i believe when the album drops so in like two weeks from now
i don’t really like knuckle puck but it was really fun listening to these guys talk about guitar
Silhoutte in the cieling~
Everything is so pathetic
i thought this was gonna be about loded diper at first because of the font of the thumbnail
That’s how’s you play the anthem part 2 riff
Odah ♥️🤘🏻
Does anyone know what riff hes playing from 12:01-12:18? I would LOVE to learn that!!!
the bridge to Tune You Out
They sold out way too fast before. I need to get my hands on the second batch!
2:36 me too! :)
I feel attacked because thats how i play the anthem part 2 riff
anyone know what kind of pickup nick is using in the bridge position on his jazzmaster?
It's a Jazzmaster sized Wide Range Humbucker, probably a Lollar, Novak or maybe a Rose Picasso. Could also be Creamery. They all sound pretty alike.
Elyon thanks for the reply man
What tuning is Kevin in? Drop D or C?
Probably in half step down standard, Eb standard or D# standard whatever you call it
I honestly watched this whole thing thinking "knuckle puck" was knocked loose LOL
knuckled poose
That Japanese Jazzmaster is fuckin beautiful
I still play anthem pt 2 with 2 fingers lol
I love Kanookla Pook!
Better than hitting the pookie.
I immediately went to the comments section just to look for a comment like this. Wasn't dissapointed.
Why does nick have no amp 😂
I hope Mr. Nick knows that there's airports in Mexico. (If you know, you know)
I can write really good riffs but got no one else to play with.
same I don't write like "really good riffs" but I enjoy playing...
I think everyone's first song was either brain stew or smoke on the water.
or back in black
Bro homie on the sg. Please play a Baritone guitar, ur arms look long and the fit would fit u better. The neck is longer
What guitar is the lead singer playing
looks like a Fender player jazzmaster with humbuckers
wait no probably a custom built cause the neck has a p90 and i have no idea whats in the bridge lol
Nick look likes Dana Carvey
Ka nook leh pook
Funny because power chords ARE fifths. Tomato, tomato.
What type of fender is he playing?
Telecaster
Nick is playing a Fender Jazzmaster, Kev is playing a Gibson SG
Kanookla Pook
KanooklaPook
I also only play the riff from Anthem pt2 with two fingers....
they forgot to kiss @ 2:09
Dude on the right looks like he's related to Travis Barker
knoopla pook
I like how you can see they're plugged into an amp but dont use it 😂
First
Jesus loves you!!!!
THEY CANT EVEN PRONOUNCE THEIR OWN NAME , IT'S KANUCKLE PUKE
Knuckle Puck never needed to learn chords from Blink-182...they should have learned how to write song-lyrics and create catchy melodies and hooks.....
Dude let me hear your songs. Super pumped about it
