This is from a distillery in Brechin Angus. It's the town I grew up in and used to play in the park next to the distillery. Sadly I've never had a tour of the place as it's only recently I've become interested in whisky and I won't be getting a tour this year as they are doing something to the distillery. The web site says the water is from a stream some 8 or 9 miles away up Glenesk. I wonder, do they transport the water in tankers to the distillery. I'll have to email them to find out
A while back you picked Glencadam as your whisky of the year. I've had a bottle in my cabinet ever since and it has remained a guilty pleasure of mine as they're a bit challenging to find in my corner of the world. Really excellent product they made and a thanks for you for shedding the light. If I ever see an 18, you can bet I'll be giving it a try!.
I coincidentally ordered a bottle Glencadam 18 last week as well as the 19 y.o. oloroso, purely on the strength of the 10 y.o. (which I got after your glowing review) and the 13 y.o. As a whisky explorer, it's alway fun to enter uncharted territory in the hopes of discovering news gems along the way. Slainte!
Regarding buying yourself a present to avoid disappointment. I have done this, and probably will again. However, Christmas 2021, I suggested to my family that they club together to get me one really good bottle instead of several lesser ones. I drew up a wishlist of bottles in a price range of approx £75-£100 so there would be some element of surprise with the final choice going to my wife. I was blown away by the generosity of my family, receiving 2 of the bottles from my wishlist. Unfortunately, Glencadam 18 was not on the list as it was out of stock at my local shop. Thoroughly enjoyed the Glencadam 10 I had last year though.
It is highly regarded on other channels. In my neighborhood it's a bit pricey even though it seems to be less than most other 21's and only slightly less than the expensive Campbelltown 18's.
"...you're dealing either with a flavourless whisky or a very well made whisky." Well said, depending on how seasoned the nose/palate is and his/her experience with single malts, great whiskies can be interpreted as dull for someone who just got into the game. especially for a single malt whose expression is not in your face but rather inviting you for a long dance in the glass. IMO (:
@@callummackinnon1050 yes I totally agree tastes amazing but I think I'm a peat head haha so I've ordered lagavulin 16 and also old pulteney 12 year, hopefully these two can widen my pallet a bit 😄
To me Glencadam is an awesome malt for a pairing session with another malt of a similar age and strength (but careful - peaters or some "heavier" whiskies can indeed overpower it). Then it shows how sunny, bright and fresh it is. I'd say it's not only geographically opposite to west highland but in terms of character too - in a good way. Btw Ralfy, I finally got hold of your first book and saving it for a quiet weekend read :D cheers!
Luckily, I have all three in my collection. I've slowed down my collecting because I'm getting old. Thankfully, my daughters and grandsons enjoy whisk(e)y and they will inherit a nice selection.
I recently bought The Glenlivet 12 Illicit still, and I can't recommend it enough. 48% un-chill filtered, unfortunately not natural color. To me it is how great the regular Glenlivet could be if it was sold that way. Everything I love about Glenlivet 12 intensified. Very affordable too I paid $40 for it. I recommend you try it before it's gone Ralfy.
Unfortunately I can only find Glencadam 10 yo here where I live, and it has a relatively decent price, around 45 euros. After this positive review, I really wish I could find some older stuff like this, but what can you do, you must work with that what you have. Cheers!
It seems like Dalmore is specifically marketed toward people who don't know whisky who what to buy a gift for a whisky person. Glencadam is the opposite of that.
I follow all kind of whisky reviewers. Also Germans, because they are often knowledgeable. But, I don’t know, as a Dutch person, it’s like I have an inherited scar on my soul. They are so German ….. American guys are often affectatious, we Dutch don’t like that. Ralfy is what we call in Dutch ‘gezellig’, resonates much better with my culture. This constant hint of humor, Ralfy is my favorite whisky reviewer, he knows his stuff, seems to be a nice guy, seems to be independent and honest. If Ralfy says it’s a 90, I am never disappointed when I try that whisky.
I didn’t scored as high as you did, ralfy. Though i did enjoyed it more than the 10 and 15 year old. Apparently my only 9+ scores are reserved for campbeltowns, Arran James Mac taggart editions, and edradour natural casks decanter editions
Hi Ralfy! Isn't Glenrothes also near cemetery? Im having Glenrothes from Carn Mor and just about to get myself a bottle of Glencadam 9y for a present, only half the age but CS. I have a good feeling about it. ..Finally I commented your video, have been watching at least 10 years in the shadows, I also have learnt a lot from you, thank you very much for your content and Merry coming Christmas. :)
Not reviewed fully. still watching full review but liked ,like it bcoz i trust ralfy. Ps: never know its gonna get 90/100 malt mark. Wow cheers ralfy 🥃
I just looked this up Ralfy, and I can't justify the expense (to my wife, that is) I think I'll just have to make friends with someone who has a bottle and invite myself over. After all, the finer things in life are better shared.
@@ccuellar6212 Yes (I quite like thinking of myself as a boy even though I'm retired), but unselfish consideration for the viewpoint of one's spouse is something I think of as a manly attribute. You may disagree. And anyway, she's got me a few nice bottles for Christmas.
Hullo Ralfy, In your review 896 - Ledaig 10 YO, you said Glendronach is spelt with the last three letters ICH. We know it is ACH. Caperdonich & Teaninich should fit the bill.
Thanks Ralphy for helping a sasanach through the wonderful world of whisky, your recommendations are much welcome and the arran 18 is still my favourite, have you tried the wee beauties from the raasay distillery? Rather nice indeed.
Interesting. I felt that your scores for both the Glencadam 10YO and 15YO were far too low. Obviously, part of the score, as well as integrity and overall flavour enjoyment, should be value for money. That being the case, I would have scored the 15YO much higher than the 18YO which, in my opinion is a more complex and tastier single malt than the 18YO, (at least the old editions of the 15 which we still have here in Israel. I haven't tried the new 2021 editions yet). I tried the 18YO at the distillery a few back, when it first came out. It was a tasty dram but the price hike from the 15 YO, for me, does not justify spending the extra money. (Having said that, we cannot even get the 18YO in Israel. Just the 10,15 and 21).
the old 15 yr olds were much more creamier on the finish and had a nice pronounced lemon hit when you first took a sip imo, still nice having the different itterations coming out, i had another 15 couple year later and was a bit different.
Are you trying to say you didn’t appreciate the famous grouse gift set with additional useless item from the supermarket?! I felt guilty last year when someone spent a reasonable amount on a “Japanese” whisky that was just blended there. Wish they’d have asked first the money could’ve been put to much better use.
It’s such an ungenerous malt though it really makes you look and search for its nuances and flavors and, though pleasant when found, they are hardly mind blowing. I feel 90 is too high for this 18 and feel many others do it better and with more panache. I also hate this idea of “well only really experienced whisky drinkers can get it” - bollocks, it’s either good or it isn’t, and if you have to go searching and nosing and waiting and nosing and on and on only to get what this malt delivers? Sorry, but it’s not worth it and just because it’s more tricky to pick out the nuances makes it neither better nor of somehow higher quality. I’m assuming this is a sort of unspoken follow up to the ‘Talisker 18 is shite because it’s chill filtered and colored how dare it be an OSWA candidate’? This is a nice malt, but it is never a 90. Whiskybase has this close to an 85 on average based on 60+ scores and reviews, and I think that’s a far better reflection of where this whisky stands. I also think, having tried the two, that the Talisker 18 is better. Oh my god a chill filtered, colored whisky better than an unchillfiltered, naturally colored one? Shock horror.
. . . There is a storm blowing across the Irish Sea in this vlog.
Ambience.
storm made your dram cloudy Ralfy?
Literally got my 2 bottles of glencadam 18 in today…. And you decide to upload the review the same evening!
Glorious sincronicity! ❤️
Absolutely a stunning dram. I have tried most of the offerings and they are great. The 25 is just amazing.

Dalmore’s bottles are over the top, ugly, and instantly make me distrust the integrity of what’s in the bottle.
