In his book "The Man Who sold the World" author Peter Doggett suggests this track was finished or even fully formed during or around the same time as the Tin Machine II sessions. Certainly the drum sound and vocals are totally unlike anything on Lodger.
Sounds a lot like Dennis Davis drum fills, but as if the mix was completed around late 80s. My guess is some of the basic rhythm track was recorded around Lodger or Scary Monsters era sessions but with overdubs, vocals and mixing completed later during Tin Machine era. Who knows, maybe it was a rough demo he had in mind for an aborted album between SM and Let’s Dance
Always original, always meaningful, always perfect in the audio visual assembly, always a pleasure to be enjoyed, always ... ROCK. Great Pete, great. Thank you.
You've done a nice job putting the video to the song. I've always loved this song and it would of been great on Lodger. Side 2 maybe as the song closest to it closes out side 1,the incredible Red Sails. I think Ole's similarity to Red Sails kept it from joining. That's sad as I'm a huge fan of Lodger and this would of made it even greater.
dhowellbassist Wrong. Unreleased from Lodger sessions, finally issued on 1990's Sound + Vision box set. You are categorically wrong- how embarrassed you must be. That's not Reeeves on guitar, and definitely NOT Tin Machine. You're just plain wrong- laughably so. Are you always so proud to be ignorant? Hillary supporter no doubt- just like your foolish comment about this song, you were WRONG about the election too. I voted Trump, and I won. MAGA, baby. You are SO wrong- how's that even FEEL?!?
Lol okay... There were basic tracks recorded during the lodger sessions. Needless to say, it didn’t make the cut. It didn’t see the light of day until it was remixed and released in 1991. On top of that additional vocals and OVERDUBS added at that time. I’m not really saying that this is the secret ‘’tin machine backup band’’ recording , but if overdubs were made in the early 90’s to release this, everyone knows who he was working with around this time... maybe I’m jumping to conclusions here, but my underlying point is valid... this is not a track that was completed in the Lodger sessions. I mean, I’m not making this up. Google it 🙄. Listen to the sound of the drums, and the guitars. You really think this sonically fits what you hear on the rest of the lodger album? And... “that’s Belew or Fripp feeding back.” Which one??? Doesn’t seem virtuosic/chaotic enough to be either of them. I think there are basic Alomar rhythm tracks from the 70’s. I think there was a lot of other stuff added in the 90’s by.... whoever. Let’s leave it at that. And what is up with this Trump shit? F*ck off. Really.
@BreakingGlass77 My thoughts exactly! :) I think it sounds like "Outside" not only bacause of David's genius, but also because of the genius of Brian Eno, who worked with him both in the end of 70s and on "Outside"
Is it possible that I hear the voice and vibe of The NEXT Day vibe and works and Outside hell yea... Bowie is always a Bowie, and in the late 70s when He made the biggest transition in music in relation to the new wave itself with (Lodger (especially, Scary Monster and ofc Heroes and Low) old New save DB. And other toddlers like David Byrne and Talking Heads sound like whole Lodger. I know that David himself was inspired by a band like that when he certainly already brought those changes in music. But David Bowie is David Bowie, always disciplined and perfect, and every one of his songs is a work of eternity, if someone told me that it was his song from 2013, I would say it was. If it was 1995a, I would also say yes. But then it is 1979, and David released his rare album from the Berlin trilogy about the last one at the very transition of post punk and new wave. Later David hated the 80s (Let's Dance and Tonight and NLMD) and his inspiration was dead until the 90s. When he awakened the new catharsis of the New futuristic dark-bright decade.
Toshino kyoko senpai it wasn’t. It was first released on the 1991 Rykodisc rerelease of Lodger. It was then rereleased as the b side to the 40th anniversary picture disc single of Boys Keep Swingin’
Nuts that this song exists nowhere! I had it on a cassette, I think, of Lodger. Or some other special release of Lodger, maybe CD? I agree about the production, but not sure about Tin Machine era. Sounds more late 80s.
I think it sounds more like from the Heroes album, anyway, all three albums sound quite alike, but definitely not like Outside, some scholars say it is a pre-Pretty Pink Rose, which also sounds like from the Berlin period though written in 1988
In my opinion one of his best songs utterly underrated.
He was so freakin' beautiful, I mean, DAMN!
i love finding videos that I haven't seen before I love it this man will always be my first crush

Such a good song, wish it had been on the original release of Lodger, would have fit well on "Heroes" too!

Great Pete, great. Thank you.
this song kicks so much ass
I can't believe this was recorded in 1979... It sounds so modern and timeless...
Wow -- this is incredible! Thank you, Peter, you gave I Pray Ole it's visual due respect, OUTstanding!
this sounds like it could fit in on the "Outside" album. Bowie was always ahead of his time.
Sometimes he was ahead of himself!
Great track
Brilliant video Peter!!!
i love the 1978 footage!!!
Love that man.
0:15.. "David Bowie..!!"

*It's a god-eat-god world*
Great video you made to accompany this.
That's a really good observation. I hear it too.
'White Room' by Cream seems to be the frame of reference here....but quite a solid track, regardless!
The video is known as "Japan '78" and I paid a small fortune ($30?) in the late 80's for a super-crappy quality of this wonderful show.
Ooch aye the noo!! (sublime)
SAILOR !!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THAT HAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!
No way this was recorded in the 70's... This is Reeves and Tin Machine in the studio. Written in the 70's? I might buy that.

what the fuck even is this comment
bionicbigfoot America lost when Trump won. And yes, this is from Lodger.
Bullshit, that's Belew or Fripp feeding back.

@MoonageDaydream2008 Thank you! I'm very glad that you love my video of Дэвид Боуи, haha :) You know Russian language a little, I see ;)
I hear in the chor just in the last minute something from the great Curve from Talking Heads .

This must have been in "a new career..." compilation >:v
