Rallying has always been my favorite motorsport but I'm starting to lose hope. I really want it to get a bigger audience and regain it's prestige, but with every new attempt by the promoters I'm increasingly doubtful about whether that's possible without losing it's soul.
What made rallying special is the endurance stages, crazy homologated race cars that you could actually buy, a truly international calendar with scenic events, open entry list with underdog privateers (theoretically you could win a rally with a lower class car), and the multitude of manufacturers and competitive private teams. It always seemed more egalitarian and attainable than the other major motorsports.
But with the loss of the tobacco sponsorship, rallying lost manufacturers, which meant it lost excitement, and the broadcast deals followed soon after. It's a vicious cycle since manufacturers are even more reluctant to join a championship with less exposure. To bring in the manufacturers, the promoter has tried reducing costs by cutting international events, shortening rallies, cost caps but nothing has worked and now we're down to just 2.5 manufacturers. The WRC+ paywall hasn't worked either, it's just reduced overall viewership.
Tbh i feel it's impossible to run endurance length stages with modern day safety regulations and cost-saving measures, let alone capture a casual fans short attention span with a live broadcast. The situation is akin to that of Test cricket, and I feel an alternative approach is needed.
There's more than one way of getting eyeballs; Instead of packaging the sport for TV format broadcast, WRC should focus on daily highlight packages, and live onboards that are available to stream throughout the rally. They kind of already do this on WRC+ and red bull TV but it's not exciting watching the second loop of the three stages that you watched in the morning, only one of which is longer than 15km. That's why they need to bring back the endurance factor with with longer, more challenging stages. Make following the progress of the rally a "Tweetable experience", trying to figure out why Tänak dropped 15s in the second split is half the fun.
World Rallycross was the greatest and fastest growing motorsport between 2016-2019 because it streamed live on UA-cam. WRC needs to do the same, sim-racing streams have already established that people have the appetite for longer form motorsport content on the platform, the could hopefully give rallying its own Drive to Survive moment. An increasing fanbase is bound to attract more sponsors and manufacturers, and a few common sense easing of the regulations could further reduce the barrier of entry and provide realistic opportunities for upstart teams.
I know this may sound naive and simplistic but we have to try something.

Dirtfish do some really good WRC coverage and it's kind of how you described, they do previews, morning and afternoon reviews for each day and they've also got a pretty great podcast.
But yeah the test cricket analogy is pretty much exactly it. The more you move it to what rally fans want, the less well it works as a package to broadcast. But when you tailor it to TV broadcast you end up with rallycross with extra steps
Granted as a new fan this year I have actually really enjoyed it but it's a shame WRC themselves are a bit rubbish
@@joeogle7729 @Joe Ogle It's amazing what Dirtfish can do with what little they have - they're basically the only media outlet left that covers the WRC. Things could be substantially better if the WRC promoter worked with them i.e. allow cheaper access to highlight packages, historical footage, more media days, etc. Imagine how much better Colin Clark, George Donaldson, and the rest of the gangs stories would be backed with actual footage.
There's dearth of free WRC content on the internet and that's a shame because there are so many great moments that could help attract new fans. F1 highlight packages on UA-cam, from a 3 hour race, are 10-15 min long, but the WRC promoter uploads a pitiful sub 2 minute video from a days worth of action. How is a prospective fan supposed to follow anything from a 2 min video??? How, pray tell, did you get into WRC? I bet it wasn't from the official WRC channel and I doubt Dirtfish has enough footage to attract new fans.
The only rally I pay to watch live on WRC+ is the Safari, and that's only because I'm homesick. The rest I follow on Dirtfish and ewrc.

@@sheikhOfWater you are correct it wasn't through the WRC channel and if anything the WRC channel has put me off getting into it sooner. It was a combination of the Colin McRae film on Top Gear. The fact the Lancia film (also on Top Gear) has permanently burned slow mo footage of an 037 jumping with a flaming exhaust in my head and dirtfish giving me exactly the coverage I was after.
The difference between dirtfish and the WRC channel for me is this. When you listen to Colin talking about the days antics, his enthusiasm for it is straight up infectious and he gets you excited for what could happen. The dirtfish coverage while they're obviously doing it because it helps the balance sheets, their coverage feels like it's a labour of love and enthusiasm for the series.
The WRC channel on the other hand feels like it was made because the marketing department said "we need a UA-cam channel with highlights and stuff because everyone else is doing it" they feel so painfully formulaic and they do less than nothing to make you excited for the rest of the rally. Also aside from the fact that as you said they're waaaay too short, and one video doesn't stand out that well from the next so your constantly wondering is it WRC? is it WRC2? is it WRC3? is it a morning highlights? is it a clip from the coverage? They're all similar lengths, they all have semi similar thumbnails. It very much feels like quantity over quality.
And it's such a shame because I think theoretically rallying speaks for itself. I can show my friends who have no interest in cars and no interest in Motorsport clips of WRC whether it's group B, group A, WRC or even just a local rally and they get it. They can see the talent, they can see the skill and they can see how damn well cool it is. And WRC's channel just stifles it. Don't feel bad about ranting by the way. I've just written one myself...
since rally1 (formerly wrc) is so challenging, there are very few drivers and manufacturers. Step it down to Rally2 (formely R5) and there is loads more competition (also teams don't have to be manufacturer ran) but sadly the WRC neglect to show this. There are currently 12 cars that run in Rally2, unlike only 3 in Rally1, and whilst they're not quite as crazy, they're still quick. Similarly to how the FIA mostly promote F1, and neglect the lower tiers, the WRC don't show off R2-5 which they really should

Simple to sort; find a sponsor to provide the funding. However, nobody is interested in a minority sport behind a paywall.....
Love rallycars and the sport. I hope it doesn’t change too much. It’s such an incredible sport. Drivers having to fix the cars themselves if they break down in the middle of nowhere. Very fascinating stuff. And the speed is unreal on small roads
Yep, and lets hope they keep making their road going versions as well, i.e Lancer TME, Focus RS, Yaris GR...
I get what Chris is saying about formula E, but I watched it for the first time not long ago and I was hooked.
It's deffo a work in progress but the science behind it and the tactical stances what goes in a race, Jesus I hope it's here to stay but it's not for everyone!!!

What also drags Formula E is their lack of broad advertisement and restrictions they have on viewing it etc. If they can improve these things and more, they can increase their audience

Yes, Formula E is great racing. The cars are much more unified so it is not about just 2 or 3 teams. And there is a lot of overtaking even though it is on street circuits and without DRS. I don't know why it has this label of being boring.
I like the attack mode and the activation zone despite Chris calling it a gimmick. It is a tactical element that brings even more action and most importantly, it is fair. Every driver has it twice per race and it is up to them how and when to use it. Unlike the DRS I mentioned that I still consider an unfair advantage that is there artificially to make overtaking at least barely possible instead of targeting the root cause. They tried this year but it is still too far from ideal.
The rules in Formula E are general well put together.
@@MartinBrada the problem I have is when cars look faster than they are. The cluster f... of bumper cars heading around thr 1st or 2nd turn is just silly. Either race on tracks, or have less cars. The lack of speed is an issue compared to F1 imo. They need to do all POV for the highlight vids because that is the only way I can really sense the speed. If they did this, and/or allowed watching the the race from any camera of my choosing so I could do POV most of the time, I would become more interested.

These need to be at least 5x the length. Not sure there is another person I would rather listen to talk about cars than Chris Harris. Maybe Gordan Murray... , but Chris is fantastic.

I went to Lydden and it was a good day but need 3x more cars. Rx is the best spectator motor sport in the world imho.

Dirtfish do some really good coverage on UA-cam. They do previews, morning and afternoon reviews for each day, a podcast and a nice sounds, crashes and satisfying clips compilation as well

You are right Chris....Rallying has become a series of RallySprints. The lack of all night stages and arduous24 hour stretches has gone for good (unfortunately) - RIP Lombard RAC!
The new cars would eat a Group B now....its not just the power, its the sensational suspension and brakes . The real loss is that fast as they are, they have lost their characters.....they all sound the same and to a certain extent look similar. In the days when I followed Rallying, I could tell a BDA a mile away, or a Quattro, 6R4, Stratos, Chevette HS etc.
I miss that.
Therefore electric motorsport has zero interest to me.
Why are insurance companies not applying large premiums to BEV’s with fantastic acceleration and a much higher risk of accidents. 🤔

If the manufacturers were mandated to homologate and sell productionised versions of the cars with identical aero treatment then the series would take off. They are utterly irrelevant otherwise.

Yep. Some amazing cars came out that way. Focus MK1 and latter Ford used his rally know how to build the Mondeo Mk3 who had an amazing chassis. And the multilink suspension was godly .... Audi quattro , Fiesta....To have that WRC capable chassis on a dally car feels amazing
A s1 quattro have more than 600 HP and weight about 1 tonne, so no they don't have the same power to weight ratio, wrc car weight almost 1,4 t

Regarding Formula E… if you have to force yourself to like it……. You don’t really like it.
The main issue with electric vehicles, is that we don't "have to start somewhere". The technology, particularly in hybrids, has been around for over 100 years at this point. Electricity was not pursued because it has concrete walls that prevent it from being a viable alternative. The mistake is not electric vehicles - they can serve a purpose, but we're doing them wrong. The answer is small commuter vehicles with as low-weight and size as possible, to fill a very limited niche. Electric cars cannot replace ICE cars around the entire globe for a huge variety of reasons. Security, power grids, materials, cost, the lack of basic road infrastructure, let along a competent government/roadway infrastructure in dozens and dozens of countries. It's a first world 'guilt' project to milk money from well-heeled Westerners.
