In the pilot episode, which was about the boat Dysker was captain of (USS Jack), his name is not even mentioned. He must have be a very humble guy. I'm sure glad he produced these dramas. I think they give a fairly accurate look at what it was like on a sub in WW2.
but the sighting of center force is credited to Dace and Darter and is well documented and doesn't sound like anything in this episode. This is a poor episode that never explains what it says in the beginning about changing the names "for reasons that will become obvious" and another ever becomes obvious. I've blown a whole day trying to sort this out and I'm left doubting its historical accuracy.
The skipper is Robert Brown, who played Jason Bolt in the series 'Here come the brides' along with David Soul, Bobby Sherman, and Mark Lenard (Spock's daddy).

What it seems like is they just paid the actors off and there are now unseen 20 or so episodes out there somewhere. How this all innocently happened was this series only wanted and preferred the best upcoming actors but they wanted the actors cheap like it was their patriotic duties and that flies about as far as mud from a mud flap in Hollywood. The unfortunate part of being a victim cast member of this one lone Hollywood entity is these overly talented folks already had several contracts and even commercials signed. These folks like Nimoy and D. Kelly George Tahki were also all very money hungry at the time so those bigger names did not work out in $$$$... Breech of contract in Hollywood is a weapon and happens when actors show up drunk stoned tired working on another project to their regular jobs can cause big problems like it did to Nimoy and Shattner Tahki and a few others... Sic Jonny Depp and all the dumb shit he tried out working several series 2 of which never aired on major net works due to just such circumstances...

When researching this action, the exploits of USS Redfin (and USS Harder) in tracking the INJ fleet at Tawi Tawi appear to be the background story, but that was covered in an episode about the USS Harder. Chief Tomkins (portrayed by Terry Becker, later COB Sharkey in Voyager to the Bottom of the Sea) appears to be a composite character representing the exploits of hundreds of enlisted submariners who stayed at their stations under similar circumstances. The characters' interfaces are inconsistent with what the US Navy at the time wanted to portray to the public, hence the Hollywood style of storytelling. Also Robert Brown (Here Come the Brides) and Dick Van Patten (Eight is Enough) portray the skipper and XO respectively.
I agree… seems like the man performed a very difficult action under horrible circumstances, and while it may not have seemed to gallant in the moment, saved the lives of dozens of his shipmates. He seems worthy of being remembered, whoever he is… and put up for the Navy Cross, too? Surely enough time has passed we can know his name.

I have a question that maybe anyone watching who served on a sub can answer. We all know how sound travels across the water so did the klaxon sounding for dive action alert enemy vessels that may not have made a visual sighting?
I think the ships as they traveled through the water there was enough noise to drown out the klaxons. I grew up with a railroad track about 35-40 yards from our backdoor. Obviously, I used to walk the tracks all the time to travel. To town or to some fishing lakes ect ect. While walking on the train tracks you have to look behind you constantly. A train could be 100 yards away and blow its horn and you couldn't hear it at all. It was the weirdest thing, but true. I to this day have no idea why it was like that.
No actually they could hear it if they were listening. But normally they sounded it when spotted anyway. The sub that sank the Indy herd dishes in the sink being cleaned after dinner.

yeah. Its measured from the BOTTOM of the sub not the top. At a keel depth of 60 feet the top of the conning tower is less than 20 feet from the surface.

Todays submarines make their own oxygen and they emergency breathing apparatus in case the ships atmosphere is contaminated.

It was season 2 through 4. Becker succeeded Henry Kulky who died at the end of the first season. Kulky appeared more than once on "Silent Service".
So why was the name of the submarine and crew changed, I missed the obvious reason why.
