Yes, I know all that. But early in every story D shows up and joins and throughout MOST of the story (whatever version or at least every version I’ve come across) It’s abt the 4 of them. Look at the show FRIENDS. Chandler met Ross in college. And Joey & Phoebe didn’t come along til they were adults and needed roommates. And Rachel left and came back. We still say they were 6. Not 4 or 5 but 6 bc that’s the story that’s told. Just like the story we’re told is abt 4 Musketeers

But it is inferior to the book. Cardinal Rochelieu ruled poorly for many years and was a powerful minister. The film ignored the Siege in la Rochelle and the war between Catholics and Protestants. A film that ignored historical events and altered French history is already wrong. The 1998 film The Man in the Iron Mask did not understand the historical period very well. The opera Phaeton by Jean-Baptiste Lully best represents the era. Philippe Quinault wrote the French libretto after a story from Ovid's Metamorphoses. It can be read as an allegorical depiction of the punishment awaiting those mortals who dare to raise themselves as high as the "sun" (i.e. the Sun King). the musketeers were no match for the Sun King and were eventually defeated and killed.
