I know this video was put out many years ago, but this is what I have been looking for to help describe the complications and pain I’ve been experiencing since I broke my fibula and dislocated my foot externally (and significantly) in 2014. THANK YOU! Back to rehabbing that leg, as lack of range in my ankle caused me to fall on gravel going downhill and break my tib-fib in an open fracture on the same leg this past May 😭 Hoping this information will continue to help me drive my recovery, as I now have 0° dorsiflexion in that ankle and my big toe constantly “locks up” as a well, causing a lot of pain as a result. Unfortunately, I also have fairly significant arthritis in that joint now too. It’s very frustrating! I’ve been following Katy Bowman’s Whole Body Barefoot and Move Your DNA books, but this helps bridge a gap between being told I need an orthotic on one hand (doesn’t really help and hurts the area of my inner arch) and barefoot shoes which I have been wearing for a few years now, and love in all respects, other than I need *some* arch support due to my injuries. Anyway, thank you!
I'm glad I found your channel! I'm a daily exerciser with hallux limitus and through some videos and reading I discovered the muscular linkages you mention. I've been doing glute strengtheners and intrinsic/extrinsic trigger point massage and stretching with fair success. I'd really like to have a professional assessment and course of physical therapy to follow rather than my own trial and error approach but I'm leery of "traditional" medicine. How can I find a therapist or podiatrist who will follow an approach like yours rather than pushing pills, orthotics or surgery?
Me too. I have severe weakness in my entire left leg. I have no function of my big toe (unable to plantar and Dorsi flex) and it’s getting a bit depressing for me. Can’t walk in heels and struggles to walk in general.
Ha, it's funny to see a comment on this older video. As an update, I did see a podiatrist and got an X-ray about two years ago and indeed I have a spur on my first metatarsal. But there is good news because by clearing the knots in my quads and calves I've been able to increase the range of motion and eliminate the pain. I also believe my spur is reducing based on the visibility of my hallux flexor tendon. Clearly (to me) there is a link between the big toe and the quadriceps. As it turns out, both are part of the superficial front line, if you're familiar with Anatomy Trains. Of course I'm just a layperson but I suggest trying to work out knots in your quads. You can do this several ways: rolling on a tennis ball, foam roller, or with a Theragun or similar. I've found I can quickly relieve knee or toe pain by using the Theragun on my Vastus medialis in particular. I wish you the best of luck in your journey!
@@zinaustro Really helpful info, thank you! An old post but a good one, I'm at the start of my journey so hunting for anything that will help. I will give your suggestions a try.
You are so smart. I pronate and have hallux valgus. Started experimenting with toe spacers, but I want to try to correct the problem functionally. I will try this exercise thanks.
Thank you for another great video. I have a bit of an issue with a broken big toe from last year, but it is coming along nicely and so is the barefoot hiking/running. Peace to you.
I was recently diagnosed with hallux limitus, mild osteoarthritis w/spurs, and I do have over pronation. I got a custom orthotic which I wear hrs a day in my sneakers. What more can I do to help this & can the thinning in the joint be restored?
Awesome video! I have one question for the short foot exercise. What if client has hallux valgus which deviates even more when performing plantar flexion? Could we 'correct' it with elastic band or kinezio taping? And what to do when client is gripping other four toes in this position and cueing to relax them doesn't work? Thank you very much for your answer.
Had my right toe fused for this and had a Morton Naroma removed . Same problem with left foot . Not sure I should do the other foot . Smart and gorgeous!!!
@@iansutube fusion has slowed my gate and slightly compromised my balance. Morton neuroma don’t think I would let them operate through the bottom of the foot. Have numb spot at surgical site.
2 things... 1. Where does one get a dancers pad? Can you provide a link? Also 2. Due to HR, I had a chevron cut surgery done on the right 10 years ago.. Totally regret it!.. What you say about the pain going up to the glutes makes total sense to me on the right side :) It has totally interfered with my qulality of life.. Do you have a exercise for this? Thank you (Also more than 10 years ago I had a video done of my gait, and was told that I may have a shorter achilles heel on the right side due to possible birth defect?)
Thank you. I am trying to avoid surgery. I have osteoarthritis and hallux vulgar ( bunion ) and its very painful. I am trying your stretch , but very painful and irritating. Do you have other stretch's?
I have a question I recently tire my achilles And I had a pain blocker injected before surgery may 12. Here it's june I still can't feel a small portion in the front of my leg n my toes were kinda stuff to. A week after my toes getting mobility bak my big toe joint has become sore? Why is this?
I noticed that my extensor hallucis longus is less prominent on the foot that I had a lapiplasty on. Could that be because of the plate and screws? Also, big toe no longer has full range of motion.
how does a hip inflair (same side as the hallux limitus) and outflair of the other side of the hip affect the chain and gait and what does one do to correct that issue.
How can I walk with a big toe fusion. I had mine 6 months ago and I can’t walk. My ankle joint hurts now. What exercises can I do to help with my gait since my toe doesn’t bend?
hallux limitus + functional. it means you can bend or lift big toe when you in open chain but impossible at closed chain in gait cycle. Not have to do with RA
By "closed chain in gait cycle," I assume that you mean the push off with big toe. I have a 2.5 arthritis but can bend my toe somewhat with the appropriate footwear (partial rocker, I guess) @@user-sq6vq2mt7u
Actually, I paid attention while walking in slippers, I cannot bend it much on the push-off, so you're right. It's not rheumatoid arthritis (R), I don't think, but osteoarthritis (OA). I have a retroverted femur so was walking outside of foot, got the valgus big toe on that leg, which caused the OA, I believe.
I’m not a Dr and I got it 🤷🏻♀️ I have been working on mobility in my foot and ankle since an ankle fracture and serious dislocation in 2014, so I am probably more aware of certain terms, but you can look them up and do your own research on this area. These days it is quite easy to find the information with a quick Google search and there are a lot of good resources out there.
Thank you for the info Doctor. Can I just keep training karate barefooted?, or is it more wise to train a martial arts with shoes on? Of course I watch out hitting to hard with the toe with hallux limitus! Or maybe no kicking at all?
I know this is an older comment, but in a video I watched from another creator (a physio, I think), he demonstrates doing this move while sitting in a chair. Starting with you legs at ~90°s , feet flat on tte floor, then slowly raising up and down while maintaining the ball in position. Maybe that would be a more doable version to try?
I walk about 10,000 steps a day doing missionary work overseas. Had a big toe injury accidentally hitting a rock. A year ago I had a cortisone shot because foot doctor said I was developing arthritis. Almost to the day, I’m starting to have pain again. My toe is stiff at times but I can still move it and walk. I would like to do some physical therapy and exercises you demonstrated. How many times a day should I do these exercises and for how long?
