Drew asked, "why is the maple leaf green". Because leaves are green because they contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis.

Actually, the current German flag is much older. It was first used when the desire for a united Germany started back in 1815. There was a failed democratic revolution in 1848 that also used the same flag.
fr i literally wanted to kill my self when he said that
It also was the flag of the "Weimar" Republic (1919 - 1933).
I WAS ABOUT TO SAY THAT
Sometimes its not a good idea to just look at the first Google Search result. The result also clearly states, that since 1990 its the flag of a reunified Germany. Not that the flag was created then, but reunified Germany was.

Dane here. The reason that Greenland doesn't have a Nordic Cross flag was quite deliberate to distinguish that the country has ties to Denmark (hence the red and white colours), but isn't Scandinavian, Nordic or even European (hence the different design)
...still looks a little funky...
Don't forget that the greenlanders themselves got to vote on what flak they wanted also Halløjsa fra Østjylland
Greenland is absolutely a nordic country. Seems like a slap in the face. Greenland has heavy roots in the Viking age. But I'm not an expert on Greenland so I can't really say
@@Undoom it is located in the american continent, and it has indigenous peoples that don't share a drop of blood with the Börks (or at least they used to, they probably assimilated by now)
but saying that a colony becomes the same as their colonizer is like saying the US is Anglo-Saxon
it just doesn't make sense
@@najrenchelf2751 It's much better when put together with the flag of the South Pole, they are perfect together! Absolute opposites.
As an Australian I am deeply disappointed by the lack of kangaroos on our flag. Papua New Guinea got a bird 😢
A dragon would be better...maybe as an Ozzie you could have a spider/snake/crocodile (insert any deadly animal). Don't kangaroos kill 3 people a year so maybe I like your idea...
@@AutoAlligator I think it should be a spider so big the tips of its legs are off-screen, or in this case, off-flag...
Agreed… it is so sad! I made my own flag for Australia.
:)@@Left969
Australia should go full villain arc and put a giant spider on our flag
The German Nordic cross looks kinda sick not gonna lie.
Yeah
We should adopt it
No I like the horizontal one better. @@zera_5317
Today this flag is primarley used in rallys of right wing extremists. Its sadly pretty burned@@zera_5317
@@zera_5317 Germany isn't a nordic country, so it has no reason to adopt a nordic cross a their flag.
@@angriboi objectively it doesn’t matter because it’s sick
I went to look at America’s own flag proposals and we seemed to be obsess with the star of David. There was even one flag that closely resembles the No no German flag.
Show
Greenland's distinction probably arises out of its population being majority Inuit, rather than Nordic. It still maintains the colors of Denmark to represent those ties.
I really like Mao’s design for the China one. The Yellow line represents the yellow river, the birthplace of chinese civilization
And one of the major problem of the line on the flag is some worry it would imply separatism, which is understandable for the concept of dividing PRC and ROC by the Yangtze was advocated by both USA and USSR before 1949, and PRC wasn't fully taking over nowadays mainland China on 1949.10.1
@@terryshi5620 ah yeah makes sense
Norway's had the red white and blue flag since 1814, even when under Sweden. Thing is we were still somewhat autonomous, much like how the Faroe Islands and Greenland is today under Denmark (theyusedtobeoursbutwahtever) We also flew a version that had the Swedish flag in the corner, likewise Sweden had a flag with the Norwegian flag in the corner. And one version was just half Norway and half Sweden.
No, Norway only had the red-white-blue flag after 1821. Prior to this from 1814, Norway used a modified Danish flag with the Norwegian lion in the canton when they wrote the constitution, and later used a Swedish flag with a red saltire in the canton until they got their current flag with addition of the union mark in the canton.
Fair I wasn't sure on the exact year. But the point is we still had our own flag and it was still basically the same as it is today before gaining full independence.@@TheSecretPower

Can't believe you didn't do new Zealand. Some of the funniest proposals ever
If we are talking alternative flags that are still really popular then... the Polish flag with the coat of arms on it has got to be on that list. Personally I think it should be the national flag, given the fact that it is already the state flag, civil/state/naval ensign, plus it would no longer get confused with Indonesia or Monaco either.
Same as russia copied poland use eagle as alternate flag
@@wingedhussar1453 To be fair the Russian double headed eagle I believe is strictly for presidential use, plus I pretty confident the Russians stole the double headed eagle from the Eastern Romans rather than from Poland.

Another day of asking Drew to put up the -Guernsey- Guyana flag to show solidarity
7:41 The Welsh flag is not part of the Union flag as it was not a kingdom. But Scotland, England and Ireland were all kingdoms.
I swear people just deliberately ignore.
Wales was an kingdom, but the English conquered it and then later annexed it into the Kingdom of England.
Worth doing an image search of the Union Jack with the Welsh Dragon 👌
One reason why Estonia's probably never going to adopt the Nordic cross is because its origin actually lies in how Danish King Valdemar II defeated the Estonians in the Battle of Lyndanisse in 1219, the year in which that Danish flag allegedly fell from the sky. The modern Estonian flag is the same one that was raised upon Estonia's first declaration of independence after World War I.
There was one summer in my nearest city (Bergen) where there was an outside gallery with a lot of the flag proposals for norway and the reasoning/ history behind them. Was interesting to learn about
I love this format. It feels a lot more interesting than the ones that are just looking at posts online.
Agreed

Of the proposed new New Zealand flags, I liked the black and red Silver Fern one because it was cool.
And it was a great idea to include designs related to Maori.
2:21 Greenland is kind of its own thing separate from the rest. (Autonomous is all but foreign relationss)
Their population is not even Nordic.
I'm assuming that their identity it's closer to being part of the North Pole
7:10 "why are these so insane sometimes?" got me rolling on the floor🤣
I think the reason why the Welsh flag isn't on the UK's flag is because Wales was part of England so the red cross represented England and Wales.
I think they just didn't want to ruin the flag by adding the Welsh flag.

@@matheussanthiago9685 I have to agree. The proposal with the dragon in the middle of the Union Jack? Fire!
2:06 It is for good reason: Greenland isn't Nordic. I believe the circle represents the sun, so it will have meaning and cultural importance to the indigenous artic people that live there. The Sami also have a circle on their flag.
You are right. The flag represents the Midnight sun.
Also, we (Denmark) didn't choose it, the natives did - of course.
Maybe the circle, represents the Artic Circle?
I like the German republic flag in Nordic style more than the tricolor we got
Drew you should do more of these commentary like videos I really like this
0:18 that's just under SIXTY years ago. No one calls 59 "about 50"
True lol
Greenland's 1978 flag proposal got the Christmas vibe 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Denmark didn't decide the flag of Greenland, obviously the Inuit & Inuk did.
That flag represents the 6 months of sun and 6 months without sun. It is actually really beautiful, and as a Dane I'm almost offended on behalf of Greenland that you speak of their flag as something to do with us...
Denmark is Denmark, Greenland is Greenland. Greenland has their own constitution and parliament and they can have independence whenever they want.
Greenland is not Denmark. They are part of our familiy, and they are welcome to be - but only as long as they want to be.
Ps. The one "from Somalia" represents the north star.
honestly im surpised you havent covered the new minnesota flag yet
1:46 Flag of Eurasia from 1984?
If you wondering drew the shields shown on the Irish flag at 4:25 is the 4 provinces (states to Americans) of Ireland. The top left is Ulster, which is the top of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, The top right is Leinster, which is the East of the ROI, the Bottom left is Munster, which is the south of the ROI and the Bottom right is Connaught which is the West of the ROI. Also the harp is a very famous icon for Ireland.
As an Australian we must put an emu on our flag instead of a roo so that we appease them and never decide to mercilessly attack us again
We need a part 2

4:49 "There are a lot of loons"
Accurate statement in any context.
7:03 The rainbow color doesn't only mean lgbtq, even tho its know for it, it also has the meaning of "peace", U can also see the same flag on the Yser tower in belgium.
The Irish Flag with an Celtic Knot design down the side of it, a crest with the 1910 province flags, a wreath of clover and a banner of "Erin Go Brágh" under it, seems like a viable concept.

I like how that "world peace flag" was proposed in 1913, right before... you know, the thing that's the complete opposite of world peace.
these type of videos where you do your own research are very cool
cool video frs i love it keep it up
The reason for so many flags with the British Union Flag in the top left is that they're naval ensigns. Most countries that want to get rid of them don't simply want to change them because the UK flag is on them, but because they're militaristic in design also.
2:26 what about the saame? They use that general design, but better.
My favorite part of the video is where you hear all the strange things at the end 😂😂
as someone from New Zealand i am so disappointed that we didn't change our flag back in 2016

it was pretty rigged lol
Lazer kiwi lol seriously the back n white fern one would have been nice as an Aussie I associate kiwis with the colour black coz the all blacks and the fern and a kiwi bird so it's got 2/3

Where is the greatest flag proposal ever to not get accepted, Lord Emperor Laser Kiwi?
Drew is like the most enthusiastic, yet still the worst substitute teacher ever.
Today, we're gonna look at flags. Yes, again. No you can't go to the bathroom, any other questions? thought so, here we go.
If he makes the kids (or anybody) want to learn more about this stuff on their own--and apparently he does, according to so many comments--then he may be the best substitute teacher ever.
I was a sub teacher for a couple of years.
If you just hop in for a day or two, by all means, it is a matter of just entertaining the kids so they don't leave.
If you are doing a full month, or a semester even, then you need to stick to the curriculum. You can't imagine how thoroughly planned-out school is. If you miss a week, then you miss out on knowledge that won't be taught again.
Many, many kids have their education ruined by schools that can't bother with proper replacement teachers.
And also, the №1 cause for teachers going sick (parental leave not counted), is burnout due to stress and over-work.
Teachers that come back from sick leave only to find the classroom upside-down, kids missing and the substitute didn't even give a f*ck about those lesson plans you've been mailing...
Of course I didn't mean to compare Drew to any real-world teacher,, substitute or otherwise. As Drew cheerfully admits, he hasn't got the credentials to be a teacher in a real U.S. school. But, as someone who was a young geography/history nerd myself 60 or 65 years ago, I enjoy his videos and marvel at his seeming ability to get young people interested in things that their demographic isn't famous for being in love with. Or maybe there are just more geography/history nerds out there than I think!
5:03 It was already used by the city of Rome when Napoleon conquered it

As a Lebanese Armenian, I found this comment so relatable... How it is possible that nobody is even talking about Armenia's flag ressembling to the 🏳🌈 flag (i don't want to give the name)
Ireland wasn’t included in 1604 flag proposals was because Ireland did not become part of the UK until 1801. Prior to that the Kingdom of Ireland shared the same monarch as Britain but had a separate parliament, although de facto control held by the British parliament.
1:41 I like Proposal 38. Dont know why I just do
4:27 the "every shield they could think of" is actually meant to represent the 4 provinces of Ireland

the flag of saint david is a size of RESSAPUBLICA LEUKOPETRA but the difference is a TRILOBITE coloured posted on center in the flag yellow and black .
there are actually places in Germany that have a nordic cross flag, like Oldenburg, coincidentally the house that the scandinavian royal families came from
The UK flag should have a a red welsh dragon in the middle! dragons are badass! Did anyone notice the mondrian style flag? Also cool
The Indian flag proposal with the British flag in the canton was proposed by Admiral of the Fleet Lord Mountbatten, who was the last British Viceroy of India before independence. He was King Charles III's great-uncle.
Makes sense for that Greenland wants a flag that's different from the other nordic countries, due to their past experiences with Denmark
Much better than meme reacting
sheesh just learned about the danish flag in history class that on June 14 we had a succesful offence against the Danes, but on June 15 supposedly a flag came down from the sky and that fueled the danes defence which turned into our loss (I am estonian btw)
My own flag design has an orange Nordic cross with a white top half and a black bottom half
1:41 Actually proposal 15 and 38 are quite good
"Why doesn't Greenland have a Nordic Cross?"

5:00 I think its more saved for Germany if they become an empire agian :)
Catalonia's flag n'has been present in heraldry since 1150. It's named the Senyera, and it has influenced many city and state flags around the mediterranian due to it being the main banner of the Crown of Aragon. One of the most famous fact about it, is that it once flew over the Parthenon in Athens (look into the Catalan Revenge and Great Catalan Company). For those who still are confused, no, the independisme flag called Estelada would not be the official flag of an independent Catalonia, but rather the good old four barred one.
Seems crazy not to mention New Zealand in a video about this, they literally had a referendum on changing the flag a few years back
2:25 the red and white Colors represents the membership of Denmark and the missing cross represents the independence from Denmark (no idea how that makes sense)
4:26 The 1928 Irish flag is basically a 1990s website made by a highschooler
Flag of Germany is actually from the 19. Century and present in the uprisings of 1848. How old it is that I don't know, but it's older than the nation of Germany itself.
