I think there needs to be a plan to stop the dumping first. Cleaning up the oceans is great, but we will be back to square one if people keep dumping it into the rivers.
It's entirely possible. The whole of Europe contributes around 2% to the annual plastic that ends up in the world's oceans. With controls, requirements and disposal companies, the amount of plastic entering the oceans can be massively reduced. And the 2 percent for Europe is still being worked on, so that as little rubbish as possible ends up in the sea.

Bless You and your amazing work and contribution to our planet! I have worked in the plastics industry for nearly 30 years and have always felt guilty about the pollution it causes. It makes my life better knowing you are out there!! Thank you🙏
Until people wake up and realize that they need to create less trash your work needs to continue. I've been a janitor for a little over seven years and early on I realized that most trash is due to laziness. People have to eat but purchasing items in styrofoam containers daily (yes, daily) has to stop. Consuming sugary drinks out of plastic bottles needs to stop. Buying toys that will be discarded in a mater of weeks has to stop. Buying trinkets and crap we don't need, needs to stop. I know none of this will happen because "quality of life" is measured in the things we consume. The next best step is to pick up the trash BEFORE it makes it into waterways. Again, it comes down to laziness. I've watched all of your videos and every time I yell at the screen because I see people stepping in and over trash instead of picking it up! I'm thrilled that the Ocean Cleanup (and Tropical Ocean Cleanup - it's a youtube channel) are doing this but I'd rather live in a world where it was unnecessary.

The root cause is that the people that lives on all this countrys dont have a municipal waste management . They need to create infrastructure that reaches out to the villiages and around citys so that not all this garbage follows the rain and goes to the rivers
You are spot on, it is waste mis- management here on Camiguin Island in the Philippines. People need to have options and be educated about them and the environment.
You are an inspiring young man. It makes a great deal of sense to trap the plastic before it gets to the ocean. Also the people near those rivers need to be educated in how to properly dispose of all their rubbish. It starts in schools.

Regarding the Guatemala river. You should be able to use a separator, sorta like a rock crusher that would allow the larger items to go above on an upper rack with holes to allow the water to drain down. The flow of water would also be used to keep moving the trash and plastic downstream on an upper level rack, so to speak. This would allow the water to flow without being held up and causing the ground to be washed out. Imagine if you will a donut fryer in Krispy Kreme where the donuts rise up out of the oil and continue moving forward. Something sorta like that.
