  • In Russia, the duty of service still exists and the hazing of newcomers is a national drama that claims many victims every year. In Murmansk, Jelle Brandt Corstius visits the Soldiers Mothers Committee where concerned mothers are trying to save their sons. Jelle drinks with war veterans to the fallen comrades, and speaks to a mother whose son committed suicide after cruel hazing practices during his service.
Original title: Soldiers as sacrificial offering
In the first series: From Moscow to Magadan, Jelle Brandt Corstius traveled from West to East, focusing on the endless Russian countryside and the villages. In this second series: From Moscow to Murmansk, he travels from North to South along the largest river of Russia: the Volga River. A trip along the relatively unknown cities like Murmansk, Volgograd, Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod, but also to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Through topics like women in Russia, new censorship, the environmental problem from Russian perspective and the ideological vacuum, a relatively unknown side of Russia is once again exposed.
    Presented by: Jelle Brandt Corstius
    Final editor: Gert-Jan Hox
    Directed by: Hans Pool

Your documentaries about Russia are the very best. Your knowledge and sensitivity is huge and your heart and soul close to Russia! There is no patronising and hypocrisy sympathy, just respect. The brutal initiations have nothing to do with manlyness, the opposite. These morons need to understand that and punished for their actions.

This is indeed a great theme and essential in describing Russia.
Russia's no.1 human asset, the Russian soldier that delivered invaluable services innumerable times, to be abused is beyond any sense of logic or right.
The documentary style is informal but who can doubt the truth of what is said - would any man in his senses ask for further proof or statistics?

To think this could be one of the most technologicaaly proficient militaries. If they spent as much time on education and development of human dignity and worth rather than suppression by violence, I think they would have a dedicated force...but perhaps this is their way to prove a man is tough enough to withstand adversity. It is a fine line. Fortify the brain or fortify the body? That is a culture issue.

Stalinist communism left a nasty scar on the whole of eastern Europe. Human life is not anywhere near as valued as elsewhere. The social intelligence of the nation went back milleniums after the bolševics took the power.

So sad and we humans are the causes of our own misery. We Americans don't know how good we have it but from the way things are going it won't last unless the country make a collective effort to get right with GOD.

Unfortunately this happens to every countries army and special forces. Some are way over the top and others not so bad. I know this happens in a few places in America but not the entire army. Just a few elite forces. But what’s the worst about the American military is that rape and sexual harassment is a huge problem no matter where you go. I’m sure it’s the same in Russia but it’s more taboo to talk about a man being raped or sexually assaulted by other men. Also 22 soldiers a day commit suicide but this just in a general area. Could be Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq or Afghanistan veterans. Sad 😞

The problem is, as you can see here, many Russian men have been raised in fatherless households. Decades of war have killed off many men. Instead, they’re raised by women in very soft conditions. Hence, when they come to the army, they need to be toughened up.

By beating them? By bullying them? You will only make them more broken. It's primitive behaviour even in army standards.

The last major war was the WWII, ages ago. There is no reason to be cruel, towards the very people who guarantee the safety of the country...
