"Top of its game" is no hyperbole. There'd been nothing else like it. Incredible. And it sounds as good today as it did the 1st time I heard it on 8 track! ;)
Only if you have the original 1973 album. The re-issues have replaced Space Truckin' with an inferior version that doesn't feature Ian Paice's 64-beat on the bass pedal.
@@kenchristie9214 Did the original contain the awesome 'Black-Night' as i don't recall seeing/hearing it at the time ? Deep Purple- (BBC Live in concert) is probably better than MIJ in displaying their musical wares, especially 'Mandrake-Root' but MIJ was slicker and very well produced in comparison and well warrants all the accolades.R.I.P Jon Lord, king of the hammond.
Since the reunionyears esp. Gillan told us these xl versions were an anachronism, more and more 87 they trimmed ST down. Such a shame but who would like to listen to Morse era versions stretched out like that?
They were my favourite band since Hush was released. I was at the Made in Japan concert (with Rory Gallagher and Fleetwood Mac opening and all for $3, haha). What a great show and great album. A week later, I saw it for sale, bought it, played it, and I was right back reliving the concert. Thanks for the memories. I’m 72 and still listening 😊
Hi Ritchie, I'm a musician too, I'm a pianist, and I'd like to tell you that I loveyour style and your playing... especially "When a blind man cries"'s solo, you are awesome. I have also written a piano piece and I was inspired by you and your music and I think I'll dedicate it to you, it's in B minor. Great Ritchie, you are amazing! go on like this
I was fortunate enough to have seen them in Pittsburgh during their Made in Japan tour. I believe there's some film footage of certain songs, Child in Time being one of them. I'm really glad the camera man or woman focused on Ian Gillan playing the bongos during one of the greatest guitar solos ever.
For me, since I first listened to this album, around the age of 14, it is the best album, in any genre, that I have ever heard. From then to this day, 45 years later, it is still the album by which I measure everything else
I bought it when I was 13 and was stunned. It hasn't aged a bit and the reason is: MiJ defined what a live album should be, because these five guys had a common principle on stage: every single note must entertain the audience. And they had worked on it for three years without rest.
John Lord had it right - this is a document of a powerful band with no weak links at the height of its power. What an album, perhaps the greatest live rock record ever recorded imo.
There is no band that will ever be able to play and sound like Deep Purple. MIJ, was and still is, and incredible album with so much power, so much virtuosity, so incredible performance and yet recorded with minimal equipment, no effects, no over dubbing, nothing. Just as it was. What an amazing legacy!!!
The 70s had some of the best live albums ever and this definitely one of them. Ritchie and Jon’s fingers were on fire on this album, the whole band was just totally on top of their game.
I have listened to this album at least once a month since it was released over 50 years ago. Without question the greatest live album ever, and it isn't even close. No rock band ever had 3 virtuosos to rival Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice. Spectacular muscianship.
15 years old, first date with my soon to be high school girlfriend. Pizza parlor tripping on blotter , they had my woman from Tokyo on the jukebox and I think space trucking might have been the b- side . I still have my original albums of Deep Purple, also a few cds . Thanks for the memories!
Wonderfull insight by Jon Lord. Indeed, when you wan't to listen the Machine head songs or grasp the musicianship and live performance energy of this band in its prime - you listen to the Made in Japan LP.
Lans Ullrich's all-time favorite album. As for me, I was 15 years old when it came out. My allowance was $0.25 a week. The double album cost $5. Rode my bike to downtown Vancouver. A & B Sound. This was the only album I bought until I was in my 20s. Also at this time I was in a garage band. Our lead guitarist (the most talented) was a Jimmy Page fan. Bassist was a Black Sabbath fan. I was on vocals, loved Deep Purple. We went absolutely nowhere, but that was ok too. As to DP:MiJ, on relistening to it several times recently, the vocals stand out. That dude had lungs of steel. Anyway, 9 songs across 4 records sides = nice long tracks. Love 'em all.
The late, great Jon Lord. Child In Time from the album is the greatest live version of a song ever recorded imo. Made In Japan's 52 years old now but it's still regarded as one the finest live rock n roll albums ever made.
Finally some footage of that milestone hard rock concert who is still the epitome of hard rock music. No other band has touched that to this day. Hear only the guy on the drums- without words. They had 3 concerts, first went bad and Blackmore did not even got the riff to Smoke On...right!!- his nerves. The concerts started 6 o´clock in the afternoon so Gillan greeted them with a : Good Morning- another funny remark was : I have good news for you- next week we will turn professional. British humour- very funny.
I think Jon says everything was made under incredibly difficult conditions ! I love it though 😀 I tend to think as a whole Deep Purple and its associated bands created the best rock music … they all never stopped !
A mate at school gave me a tape of this in about '77. Absolutely played it to death - my introduction to 'proper' rock music. Knew (still do!) all the solos. Started a lifelong love of live albums - Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Eric at the Rainbow, Mott, Creedance at the R.A.H. etc.
Best songs of DP were made by Blackmore/Coverdale imo. Like Burn and Stormbringer. Loved the time when Coverdale was on lead vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass. Saw "California Jam" at least dozen times.
Fun fact. I first heard “Woman From Tokyo” on (I think) “Deepest Purple”. For years I assumed it was from the Japanese concerts because the slow piano section before it ramps back up again was recorded with an echo which, to me, sounds exactly like the ambience in the Budokan. Coincidence?
In this era, purple never played woman from Tokyo at concerts and must’ve been dubbed over a different performance of another song or of them just performing on stage
DEEPEST PURPLE was/is like 24 carat and Singles A s and Bs a sampler of studiotracks/singles. POWERHOUSE was different, included live and studio stuff not released before.
The only part of Jon's comments I would take issue with is where he says "one of the greatest live albums ever". Far too modest Jon, it is without question the greatest live album ever. He's right about Martin Birch too. We miss you both, RIP.
Nah the original Made in Europe had pieces edited out, while Japan were complete performances. Better to listen to Live in Paris 1975, the complete show
Absolutely the best rock keyboardist EVER. When this man passed away we lost a great one. RIP Jon
Amen
No argument from me
Indeed Purple were blues hard and prog rock... across those genres Lord is definitely not in the shadows of Emerson and Wakeman
Nothing better than hearing Jon Lord speak. He’s a great storyteller and a very intelligent and interesting man
Indeed he was.
Best live album ever.
R.I.P Maestro ✝️
Simply the best live album ever .
Dear Ritchie: you and the guys were simply superb back then. This record was (and still is), the soundtrack of my life! Thank you!
"Top of its game" is no hyperbole. There'd been nothing else like it. Incredible. And it sounds as good today as it did the 1st time I heard it on 8 track! ;)
My first copy was also 8 track. 😆
Totally agree 👍
When I was 14 yrs old, the first album I bought with my own money! Still have it. 65 now

Champion, with fine taste in rock'n'roll.
I was about to write the same comment
One of my first albums
I’ve always said that if I had to sum up British rock music in one album, then it would absolutely have to be Made In Japan.

The greatest live album ever.
Couldn't agree more.
Only if you have the original 1973 album. The re-issues have replaced Space Truckin' with an inferior version that doesn't feature Ian Paice's 64-beat on the bass pedal.
No doubt!
Along with Live After Death

It’s not just a great live album, for me it’s the greatest. You are dearly missed, Mr. Jon Lord 🙏🏻
In a decade of truly great live albums Made In Japan is the VERY best!
I listened to that scratchy LP over and over in my teenage years and the twenty minute space trucking was and is fabulous
Since the reunionyears esp. Gillan told us these xl versions were an anachronism, more and more 87 they trimmed ST down. Such a shame but who would like to listen to Morse era versions stretched out like that?
Me too!!
Rip Jon... Yesterday I was listening your solo on Flight of the rat. A genious. Rip legend
The best concerto album ever!
The greatest live album of all time, no question.
“Made In Japan” was the first record I ever bought, still love it. Jon Lord is still my favorite Hammond guy! Rest in peace sir.🙏🏻🎧🎹
They were my favourite band since Hush was released. I was at the Made in Japan concert (with Rory Gallagher and Fleetwood Mac opening and all for $3, haha). What a great show and great album. A week later, I saw it for sale, bought it, played it, and I was right back reliving the concert.

The first album that bought when i had 13 years old. I am 59 now and after 585 LP'S in my collection is still the best live album for me

If anyone ever doubts that Ritchie is the most talented guitarist ever to pick up the instrument, play them this album.
He's a true genius and like all geniuses, they'll only realise when he's gone.
Yesssss
The interplay between Jon and Ritchie is amazing. True musical geniuses tied to the hip.
For me, since I first listened to this album, around the age of 14, it is the best album, in any genre, that I have ever heard. From then to this day, 45 years later, it is still the album by which I measure everything else
wore out the record and staired at the picture on the front cover the whole time, it's called imagination, thanks DEEP PURPLE.
Still one of my most favored Rock Classic Treasures ... "Lazy" inspired me to play guitar.
I bought this two-record set when it was released. Deep Purple’s “Made in Japan” changed my life.
I bought it when I was 13 and was stunned. It hasn't aged a bit and the reason is: MiJ defined what a live album should be, because these five guys had a common principle on stage: every single note must entertain the audience. And they had worked on it for three years without rest.
After more than 50 years - the BEST RNR live LP ever!
John Lord had it right - this is a document of a powerful band with no weak links at the height of its power. What an album, perhaps the greatest live rock record ever recorded imo.

Keyboards in Heaven.
I totally agree with you Jon - a selection of songs performed over three magical nights with superb production.
So much we have lost. We must remember the performance. The music always live on
Greatest Live Album in History. The only conversation is what is the second best.
Brilliant Album, he's quite right. RIP Jon.
Your absolute best.
The 70s had some of the best live albums ever and this definitely one of them. Ritchie and Jon’s fingers were on fire on this album, the whole band was just totally on top of their game.
My favorite "live' album of all time, by any group.

I spend a year of my early teens only listening to one c90 cassette tape, side 1, side 2, side 1 aso. It was Made in Japan. I still know every sound…
А я начинал слушать ещё на бобинах🤣💯👌
Back in the 70s, vinyl, reel to reel and 8 track were the only available playrers you can buy and I've got the LP for DP MIJ.
A just amazing record! I still have my vinyl from the first pressing.
The greatest live rock album from the best hard rock band of all time
Made in Japan and Made in Europe are outstanding live albums.
'You fool no one' from MIE takes things to the stratosphere of things.
Live in Paris 75 to me is better than Europe (last mk3 show)
Stockholm 1970 and London 1974 are other two amazing live albums.
15 years old, first date with my soon to be high school girlfriend. Pizza parlor tripping on blotter , they had my woman from Tokyo on the jukebox and I think space trucking might have been the b- side . I still have my original albums of Deep Purple, also a few cds . Thanks for the memories!

The greatest rock n roll band ever
One killer live album. 👍❤️💪💯🔥
On fire...love Ian on those drums!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, I recall 7 tracks because encores were left out for decades.
@@jonblackers4339 You're right, 7 tracks. Space Truckin' taking up a whole side by itself. Thanks!
We all loved it, and we all remember the jokes about Japanese cars back then. 😄😄 Thank you for the wonderful music and memories!
Ritchie jon and ian were the ❤&soul of purple
i had it on an audio cassette, played it a million times
There were other live recordings of Purple from that era, and they are all outstanding.
The late, great Jon Lord. Child In Time from the album is the greatest live version of a song ever recorded imo. Made In Japan's 52 years old now but it's still regarded as one the finest live rock n roll albums ever made.
Deep Purple war eine großartige Band
I agree. Best live album ever. Nobody can top Ritchie. Second best? Live after death by Iron maiden

Believe Blackmore did it on purpose, all three nights. Another side of DP humour 😂
It was not an error, they loved to improvise.
A melhor formação do Deep Purple até a atual. Airey e McBride, remetem o Deep Purple atual a este clássico do MKII
MIJ always with me. 🎤🎸🎹🥁
I think Jon says everything was made under incredibly difficult conditions ! I love it though 😀 I tend to think as a whole Deep Purple and its associated bands created the best rock music … they all never stopped !
Another great thing about this album is it always seems like it's going to explode into chaos at any minute! But it never does. It's THAT exciting!
Hace unos dias ví el concierto de nuevo y como siempre quedé muy satisfecho, Depp Purple forever😊
Nothing I’ve heard compares to Made in Japan apart from Rainbow Live.
Rainbow is awesome!
"can we have everything louder than everything else?"
good one I still use this saying today.
A mate at school gave me a tape of this in about '77. Absolutely played it to death - my introduction to 'proper' rock music. Knew (still do!) all the solos. Started a lifelong love of live albums - Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Eric at the Rainbow, Mott, Creedance at the R.A.H. etc.
Most popular LP of its time,
Absolutely brilliant album. There's only one question - why it was not filmed?
👏👍
el mas grande disco en vivo de rock de todos los tiempos
Deep Purple soldiered on when Blackmore left but when Jon Lord checked out it was truly over.
This is also a teatament to Martin Birch. Let's not forget that. Love his work with Iron Maiden, and Rainbow.
Far Out
☮️
Had no idea space trucken was filmed as well. I know highway star and smoke on the water from the live in Japan wonder if this is on UA-cam or not
Che la terra ti sia lieve. Maestro
That drumroll at 2:02
Guys please i want to find the LAZY video from 17.08.1972
I would like to see a video of the albun. But I think what we hear in the albun is a mix of those shows in Japan.
Watching him in videos make me think he is still alive. So... Now and then I'll watch some videos.

First purple album I ever heard
The version of Highway Star on this album has Ritchie's career best solo.
Made In Europe is as good as Made In Japan. Try IT !!!!
It’s a great album, though Live in London is better. But considering the recording technology available to Martin Birch, nothing comes close to MIJ.
Nah the original Made in Europe had pieces edited out, while Japan were complete performances.
Better to listen to Live in Paris 1975, the complete show
Made in Europe is awsome, also.

Mk2 produced by Deep Purple. 3:30
I should dig out my old records and find a needle

😢rip Jon
Not fixed in the studio either!
I can’t believe Deep Purple have the gaul to continue without Blackmore & Lord 😞
A thousand years from now keyboardist will still be studying what Jon was up to 🤪
One of the saddest parts is all the empty seats in the venue. Even at the back of the stage, there isn't much I wouldn't give to have been there.
Seats wasn’t sold behind the stage that’s why you see empty seats
Yeah Budokan is a Sports-Arena, so there are seats all around. They had to put the stage at one end, so there gonna be seats behind the stage
Visible are only Gillan, Glover and Paice. Pity......
Hi Ritchie,
Deep Purple has a great Tour
while you sitting on a chair playing slow guitars
But playing them better than anyone who has ever lived.
He doesn't want to do that stuff any longer.
😊
Goosebumps
